Why is America the fattest country on earth? This story is downright embarrassing.

You're young, there is NO reason you should be anywhere near fat unless you just have some funky issue with your motabalisom (sp?) or something...

Besides, you're not American, you're not welcome in this thread ;-)

Seems that this was done in Ireland, which, in my daffy mentality, is right next to NZ =)

Quote:
researchers from The Adelaide and Meath Hospital in Dublin said in a presentation to the annual meeting of the Radiological Society of North America.

Quote:
The 25 men and 25 women studied at the Irish hospital ranged in age from 21 to 87.

Then they follow up with this:

Quote:
An estimated 65 percent of U.S. adults are overweight or obese.

Well, I am overweight technically, I am 6'2" - 6'4" (depending on which convenience store I am leaving) and weight 220...I have a little gut on me, but, given I work out HARD around 10 hours a week, I figure gut or no gut, I am in pretty damn good shape...the gut is just the beer and soa I can't seem to stop drinking :-)

I have lost 25 lbs since new years 2005, and this year is the first time I can remember ever KEEPING that new years resolution...

man, dB, I couldn't even carry your gym bag, let alone compare to the workouts you've done in the last year. That kind of workout isn't for the meek, either.

It's pretty odd for the first learning to hit, kick and grapple and stuff...after a few classes though, it's not that weird, ya get used to "fighting" (which is kinda the key to self-defense in the first place)...my instructor gives a free week, take a vacation and come to Minnesota, let's roll...after the "weird" is over it's actually a lot of fun...

picking up setia hati was like that; very odd movements, unusual stances, limb control, etc. Then after a few weeks, it became much more fluid, and normal.

Then the training kinda fell apart, and the real instructor local won't start a class, so I fell out of it.

I bet I couldn't convince the missus to vacation in MN, though I could try =). Actually, I was in the twin cities (south side of Minneapolis, though I can't remember the name of it) for a meeting, before I got onto this website. It would have been cool to meet up for a bit. 14 hours drive is kinda hard to commute =/

South side is Bloomington, Richfield, Edina, Eden Prairie and some others and me and Noize are south of that a city or two...

Ya, I didn't have that hard of a time getting used to the stances and such (though a little) more difficult was getting used to the actual contact, swinging and kicking at people, grabbing them and wrestling and stuff...hadn't done any of that kind of thing for years...

Okay, another non-American, but I live here....Am I still unwelcome!

I've often thought about the number of people who do go to the gym. They drive there, and then get on a treadmill, or stationary bike.
Why didn't they just walk there, or ride a bike....

By the way: Fat girls need love too....

well, up here half the year you can't (or don't want) to jog or bike outside.

I never got the typical "gym thing"...go and lift weights or treadmill, which one could just as easily do at home with about the first year of dues to that gym...

I drive to the gym, fight for 2 or 3 hours, then go home all sore and bruised up...

Gotta agree on the gym thing as well. Not in MN you wont walk there. And for the most part, I am about 5 or 6 miles from the nearest gym. We do have a Parabody in the house here, I havent been on it real steady for the last 9 month's though. But that is one of my resolution's for this year is to get back on the thing on the every other day basis. My job require's a lot of moving and heavy lifting and lot's of heavy hand and arm work so I am definately not out of shape for the most part. But ya, the gut is the worst part of it. And that is were the Parabody will help out the most.

But remember.

You know, like you, dB, I'm fairly active. Between football games and basketball games with my students or my own three sons, and snow shovelling and my morning bike rides (stationary now)...I burn off plenty of calories. My trouble is that I like to eat too much. I'm 6' 0" and weight around 190. I need to lose about 15 pounds, and could probably do it if I just stopped eating like a pig. (And maybe cut back on the beer intake a bit...OK, a lot!)

Everybody has a right to a vice or two...

I gotta admit, I am pretty beat up this morning, my face is sort of puffy from getting hit last night in the mush a few times (dished a couple out tho too) my shin is REALLY tender from the shin on shin collision, my shoulders and knees are wrecked...plus, to add to it my nose is all stuffed up, must be catchin a cold...goof thing tonight is "Survivor" night...so I can drown in 'tussin and veg out so I don't get any sicker.

I think I just decided after this contract is over (probably april) I am taking a month off so I can have my nose broken and reset, it's been crooked my whole life and it's only getting worse (and no, not from getting punched on a regular basis) every year, it's to the point now where one side is almost completely closed...it's a ***** when I catch colds...

jeez, I dunno where this little rant came from, but there ya go...

I started working out a lot reciently..just before Thanks Giving, nothing special... mostly just situps/crunches until muscle failure throughout the day... which is totalling around 200...plus some pushups and some curls.

The second and third day was the worst as a lower ab muscle hurt a lot...so I mostly did curles for a few days.

In a week it made a lot a difference...though I don't have a scale or tape. My fatassness got to the point of having to hold my breath while tieing my shoes which isn't a problem now...my goal now is to be able to stand in the mirror and see the bottom of my belly button :) or atleast get to 300 situps and pushups every day.

'I think I just decided after this contract is over (probably april) I am taking a month off so I can have my nose broken and reset'

--i had this done when i was 18. crazy! i loved it. 'twas a deviated septum. they went in and broke it to reset it. there was also a small hump that either had formed on my nose when i broke it, or else was natural. they filed that down since they had to work on that whole area for breathing purposes anyway. then they had to alter the tip of my nose to make everything be in proportion. so i came out of there able to breathe and looking slightly different. black eyes for a week or two. pain was bad. upon waking my first words were something like 'where is the doctor i am going to wring his neck' (he was standing right behind my dad.)

only thing is, i cant breathe well again. i am not sure if maybe smoking irritates my nasal lining or not, but i notice when i stop things seem to get clearer.

Yeah, I gotta go see a nose specialist and see what I can do...I know I have been told some things could be done to improve breathing, but the possible side effects, such as scarring and stuff, could add up to be even more of a blockage than the original issue.

I have a deviated septum as well, from birth, and it's never really bothered me noticably until the last 4 or 5 years and it's been gradually getting worse...I gotta do something...

I gotta do something!!! Just went for a follow up exam for a ski accident last Feb...so I'm 8 months late for the follow up. Really trashed my leg and back, fortunately nothing broken but could hardly walk for about 4 months. Anyhow, I'm 6 feet tall and weighed in at 251...a new record!! I've been in denial for about 2 weeks but now that the slopes are open, I gotta do something! Time to hit the stair climber I guess. Slopes opened this week and I'm in the worse shape I've ever been in. The snow board is gonna moan when I strap it on!

--its not that obvious though, since lots of other people smoke and still have clear nasal passages. indeed, im the only one i know that actually experiences a restriction in my passages when i smoke. its not congestion or anything like that. its mild swelling in the nasal passages. it doesnt feel like anything in particular--you just cant take as much air through there. everyone knows about the reduction in smelling ability associated with smoking, but ive never heard anyone talk about inflammation...

i probably just have a mild smoke allergy.

that makes sense, I was just being a jokester, taking the easy shot when it was there.

I smoked for years, and had some reactions, on occasion, but never anything full time. Once in a while I'd have some inflammation, in the throat, or nasals, but it was very few and far between.

This had me rolling, rolling I tell you!

Hmmm, I don't know about how they measure what overweight is. I'm about 5'10" and 190 pounds. But I don't think I'm really overweight. I guess I could lose a couple pounds, but I mean, I wouldn't want to lose too many. I don't think I'm out of shape. I play full court basketball 2-3 (sometimes up to two hours straight) times a week. I stretch for about 45 minutes to an hour 2-3 times a week. Plus I do minor weight lifting and/or pushups 3-4 times a week. And I do a lot of walking since I have no car. But yeah, I do eat a lot, though I have pretty much cut beer out of my diet. Hard alcohol is still a go though. Plus I'm vegetarian (so you have to figure I really do eat a lot to keep my weight up).

166lbs??!!! Are you kidding me? Never gonna happen! I haven't weighed that little for about 10 years when I was 17, just out of highschool. Nope, I'm pretty convinced my ideal weight is about 180-185 lbs. That's what I'm shooting for, and by shooting for, I mean not really doing anything to actively reach that goal. Just playing basketball as often as I can.

Now I'm about 190 but I have a bit of a belly. I would like to trim down a bit but not lose any weight. I just want to turn it to muscle. Are they nut's??? I float between 225 and 230 right now. I, like dB wanna get to an even 200 and I'd be happy. dB probably remember's when I had some dietary trouble's shall we say about a year or so ago, and I went from 235 to 180 pound's in about 6 week's time. I honestly looked like ****! The doctor's couldnt find a thing and they probed every orrifice they could. Finnally they came up with some off the wall thing and decided to try some medication and it helped. I started gaining weight again after about a month and half.

But ya, the beer and Coca Cola is probably my worst enemy. I like the thick dark ale's so I am guessing that is a huge contributor to my weight. Although now the beer intake has been curbed massively so we will see were that lead's.
