steelers are a machine this year. roethlisberger just broke some kind of record for wins for a rookie QB. his first few NFL games and he wins all six. the steelers also broke a record today by beating a second undefeated 6-0 team in back to back games. this QB looks exceedingly accurate and really good!

Yeah, I was super stoked to see the Steelers be the spoilers the last couple weeks.

Vikes don't play until tomorrow night, and still without Randy Moss...

Kansas City's defense infuriates me. I'm too big of a fan to not watch, but this season is killing me.

yeah man it sucks when your team's down. whole seasons can go by for me where i don't really follow football because for a long time i found i wasnt interested if the steelers were having a bad year. now i realize i have to stick with them, cause to see a team do well after a few bad seasons or near-misses, that's part of what makes winning so great.

i want to get to the point where i can be like you guys and just shuttle around and watch whatever game happens to be on. i can't do that yet, i guess because i dont know many of the players in the league outside of my team. i find it hard to know who to be for. what do you think it takes to become a general football fan? i already love the game, so that's not the issue. maybe i should study the division setups to have an idea who to be against, and also locate a few favorite players outside my team?

Forty, I have 2 words for you to become a fan of more football teams: Fantasy Football.

It's added a whole new level of enjoyment for me...now, I find myself catching other games on Sunday that I normally wouldn't care about, just to see how one or two fantasy players are doing.

I think that NFL.com is hosting a short league that runs thru weeks 11-16, and it's free. I've been doing Yahoo.com's fantasy football for the past couple of years, which is also free.

well, at the first of the season, you join a fantasy football league, and you have a draft. The specifics differ from league to league, but to use my league as an example, we have an automated draft where you pencil in your desired players and the computer takes care of the rest. You can have somewhere around 10 or 12 players on your team, but each week you can only play 1 quarterback, 2 running backs, 3 wide receivers, a tight end, a kicker and a defense.

The scoring is based on the statistics of your players for the week. For instance, a quarterback earns 1 point for every 20 passing yards, 6 points for a TD, loses 4 points for throwing an interception, etc. A running back earns 1 point for each 10 rushing yards, loses points for a fumble, etc. A defense earns points for interceptions, fumble recoveries, sacks, etc.

Each week, you're matched up against somebody else from your league and the team that earns the most "statistical" points wins.

I know it sounds nerdy, but it really is pretty fun to try to guess who is going to do well each week. It's actually a pretty huge deal, I know a bunch of people that play in various leagues. Some leagues you have to pay for, some are free (I've stuck to the free leagues so far). I pretty much suck at it, but I still have fun. I'm currently 5th place in my league of 10 in a Yahoo public league.

actually that sounds really fun. i'll see if i can get in late maybe. another good way to get more into football would probably be to get a playstation.

If you do want to get in late, NFL.com has a late league going from weeks 11-16, and its free. Not sure of any other details cuz I've only played the full season leagues.

I think that John Madden has taught me everything I know about football via the Madden football series! I've always played it on PC with a Sidewinder gamepad. There are just enough buttons on it to still play football...although just about every other game has outgrown the ol' gamepad.

thats what im saying. i'll play the madden. and i just (right now) discovered 'NFL prime time' on espn. that was helpful! im a regular viewer of that now. (esp since they just called pitt the best team in the league :)

guitar_jim, that's a great idea. We could track it on Yahoo so it can be free and just be fun. The only thing we would really have to coordinate is the draft, after that we could all be back to our own schedules.

I like that idea a lot.

forty, I hear ya, if you don't know anyone else it isn't quite as fun, but really the only way you get to know others is buy watching. There are some player/teams I don't know much about myself, in those games I just cheer for the underdog :-)

AAAAARRRGGHHHHHH!!!!!!

As if it wasn't bad enough that my Giants lost to the Bears, We also lost both our starting DE's for the rest of the season (One of which is the best player we've had since LT).

Add to that, the fact that my dog might need surgery to fix his ACL (this will be his second).

I am in a very foul mood this week.

Yeah, last night weas tough to watch for me. The Vikings lost in the first quarter, after that they played great. Started down 14-0 in the first, then with a few seconds left in the game it was tied 28-28 and the Colts picked up a field goal to win.

The Vikings, as a rule are horrible when they are behind, they need to start on top, yesterday they showed they can come back, I'm really bummed they didn't pull it off, but kudos to them for the effort.

Next week is GB, Vikings and Green Bay is always a wicked rivalry...and generally a pretty good game.

Steeler fan here too. Shame they sucked big time last year, so they don't get any TV this year. Great!

I have too many grey hairs from the last few years (and let's not go there on the Niel O'Donnell superbowl) from watching the Black and Gold. This season looks promising, but I can't live on the edge for the next eight plus weeks. My nerves won't take it (on top of it all, I've just sold a house, and bought a bigger house - that's fun..but I do get oodles of room for studio!!!!!!!!!!.).

Well, I guess a win is a win, but the Packers' defense is absolutely horrible, at least as bad as Minnesota's. Today Brett Favre was just a little bit better than Culpepper...that was the difference in the game. We really tried to give it away, but we just held on in the end.

dB, not a banner day for you...but tomorrow is another one.

did you see that fight before the game? i got to the bar late but i saw it in replay. what a rivalry.

be happy! it's a super bowl year as long as ben doesn't have any moments of doubt here. when i play sports if i get on a winning streak sometimes i can get overconfident and that in itself brings you down. he's gotta stay on his toes and be able to think on his feet and that means not taking himself too seriously. so far, so good. ben's quote last week "the way i see it, we're just playin' football." if he keeps up that attitude we'll be great!

Actually, I am an Englishman. I've been living here since 1991. Had to pick a team, and the only "hot teams" at the time were the Giants, and the Bills. Both went to superbowls.
Both CHOKED.

I went for the team that played the toughest, most consistent football. That consistency did, unfortunately, drop off in recent years.

you'd judge the whole team for the behavior of one guy?

it was one steeler that got ejected, and one brown. i am gonna go out on a limb here and bet it was the browns guy who started it. cleveland has some of the meanest fans in the league--they have a nasty habit of throwing full beer bottles onto the field. and just this week, a guy named warren, the browns' DT, had threatened roethlisberger with a head foul, hoping to 'take him out of the game.' he said the $50,000 fine would be worth it. now that's immature.

imma check out what's behind that fight. hope i dont have to eat my words.

tallchap, the steelers certainly have thier good and bad years, but one thing you can say is that that town really loves thier team. football's in the air up there.

No, I judge an organization, by the acts of their staff, or more importantly, how they deal with the people that do get ejected. Or the people that, oh, say squirt gatorade in refs faces or run down traffic officers...who was that guy again...

And actually, the Raiders, as I understand it, are the lamest, meanest fans...they actually wanna move the team, but no city wants that reputation.

from the cleveland plain-dealer:

"Neither Porter nor Green were available for postgame interviews, so it is unclear why Green was over on the Steelers side. But television replays showed him and Browns fullback Terrelle Smith standing across from several Steelers players, including Porter and running back Jerome Bettis.

Green and Porter took off their helmets and started yelling at each other, spit flying from their mouths and landing on each others' faces, said Steelers receiver Hines Ward, who was standing nearby. Replays showed Green pushed Porter and Porter swung his fist and hit Green in the mouth. Green was shown afterward wiping blood from his mouth with a towel. Just before kickoff, the players were penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct."

Yes, Fortymile, my buddy is from Wirton, WV, and it's like a religion to him. Can't go anywhere unless he's got somehing black'n'gold on (Steelers/Pirates/Penguins).

As for discipline, remember when Bam Morris got caught in Texas with a trunkful of dope? (NFL RULE: NFL Players are above the law. Anyone else - ANYONE - would have been thrown in jail forever in Texas...) The Steelers axed him for breaking their rules. The Ravens immediately signed him for three million. What kind of message does that send to the kids out there? The Steelers did the right thing. They always do (except for keeping free agents..). I think they are a class act, with good discipline. I know Porter would not have thrown a punch unless he was really taunted into it.

sometimes the steelers dont seem to be playing all that well, but they keep finding ways to win. today roethlisburger handed off to his halfback, i guess, who then acted as QB for a TD pass. i must confess i had never seen that before in the pro's. lateral rules are something i never absorbed. but w00t! they won even with plax out yet again and a 'don't let randle el get the ball' strategy from the jets.

Ummm, yeah, two of the three admins ;-)

What was good about that game? What is good about this season...at least for the NFC? It's been an embarrassing, boring season in the NFC, regardless of the Vikings record, there really just isn't a good race going on in the conference...

The Vikings problems start right at the top, and I for one am really considering just no longer supporting the Vikings until that tightwad jackass Red McCombs sells the team to somebody that will try and build it and not cry about it, the fans and the state.

The Vikings have actually had the play a few times in the last 5 or 6 years, because Randy Moss can actually throw a pretty darn good pass too...of course yesterday it was that exact play that cost the Vikings the game.

Yeah, I am actually really starting to loose interest in professional sports as a whole. Hockey is now whining about money, football is getting pretty lame with the salaries these guys get and the attitude that comes with it quite often...Basketball has been a joke for years, Baseball is striking every few years. These people haven't the slightest clue how good they have it. It pisses me off.

And the owners...argh, don't even get me started on them...

Jack of all trades master of ___

I will always be into hockey...its blue collar. I don't care how much whining goes on, just get it done! Unlike most folks I don't get into the money aspect...what these people get paid is out of mostly of our control...the owners have the cash, and try to get more by paying outragous salaries to build championships...its the nature of the beast. Would wouldn't turn that down being a pro athlete??? Thats the question...

Football and Basketball are too Hollywood. Baseball has a chemical problem and what about Hockey???? Oh wow, people say its too violent??? Has anyone seen australian rules football???...

Sad thing is...people want cocky/showy hollywood players...why do you think the NFL and NBA are so popular?...In this fading "American Idol" republic ...people love and love to hate this stuff...If the NHL began post-goal dances, taunts, players taking cell phones from the webbing behind the net... and then throw in a couple NHL based coors light commercials with kid rock and britney spears, I bet it would start to climb on people...

All sports have taunts, Baseballs chemical problem is that there is nothing to address it. Might as well gamble on the game...Oh wait!...

...but how many hockey players do you see gather up and do the bob and weave over a puck after a goal...or do this squatting/strutting sh** on center ice...or skate in some celbratory formation......typically, a goal is scored guys yell, pump a fist, hold up their sticks, gather in a crowd and go dap the bench...

When was the last time Brett Hull scored then in small circles, tippy toe strutted behind the net only to flex his bicept to the crowd???

When the Canucks went up 2-0 in game 7 by a Todd Bertuzzi goal...in the WC semis...he skated by the Wild bench and said "Get out your tackle boxes"...that is a norm in sports...whoopty...

I can't stand this sh** where a player does his NORMAL job and it now becomes a showboat fest...
EDIT even Martin Gramatica

EDIT...And the sad thing is...this sick country eats it up...

True, very true...I know what ya mean dB...I keep my mouth shut on the field unless someone initiates it...even then I don't get into it too much...I wait till the game is over.

I had a guy on the other team (FLAG FOOTBALL) who caught a TD pass and looked at our secondary and lipped off "Whats wrong!?"...Well, I got ticked...

NO LIE here..first play on our next drive, I called for a GO route on him and he was on me the whole way, but I came down with the ball...He was on me so much we tumbled (which was in the endzone for 6) and as we are sliding, he is on top of me and I am screaming "THATS WHATS WRONG G** DA**IT!"
He just got up with a frown and walked away...

Bottom line is...I hate cocky talkers who think they are bigger than the game...but there are two types...the funny stuff and the cocky stuff...the funny talking is irreplacable...

Yeah, ours was usually in fun, but in the campionship that last season we were up against a team that had NO sense of humor at all, they were crabby and angry at us and themselves, so we totally played on them and got them so pissed (or at least the couple main players) off they couldn't even see straight much less play ball.

But hey, we beat 'em...so, in the infamous words of the great Willy Wonka; "You loose, you get nothing, good day sir."

yeah, as soon as the HB QB play was over i saw bettis' QB stats come up on the screen, with 6 attempts, so i immediately could see he'd done it before. db you're saying the vikes attempted that halfback pass and failed it? or the 'hawks succeeded? wow, thats pretty coincidental.

ya got a point--there's a lot of good teams in the AFC right now--a lot of teams that are higher scoring than pitt. however, pitt will go to the super bowl for these reasons: unbeatable spirit, great momentum, great coaching, fantastic teamwork, luck, someone always stepping up and making a miracle play, and finally because it's time!!!

Well, actually, the vikes don't usually do a halfback pass, usually it's a reciever pass. Moss comes back around and take a hand off, then hucks it downfield. Often it works, yesterday it did not.

Though, they have done the half back once or twice as well as I recall. The vikes actually used one very effectively a couple time where Moss gets the hand off, Cupepper runs up a few yards and Moss passes to Culpepper.

Moss, while known as a reciever, is actually a very good passer and quite a good kicker as I understand it as well. Just a talented athlete.

Unfortunately, as long as Red McCombs owns the Vikings, however, they will never amount to anything, which is unfortunate, cuz there is a lot of great athletes on the team, tons of talent, but Red won't spend the money needed to take it to the next level. Plus he is always whining about losing money (keep in mind he boguth the team for 240mil and it's now worth 600mil) and the stadium issue. What he doesn't get is that nobody wants to build a stadium for a loosing team, with the possible exception of the Ford Motor Company...they built a great stadium for the Motor City Kitties.

xtc, i fear that too at times, but you listen to cowher talk after the games and it seems like they have the right perspective: one game at a time, and don't dwell. slow and steady. this might not be a team that peaks and dips. they have been pretty consistent, and i think that even if they lose a game, it will not become a trend, given the character of the leadership on the team.

Well I can tell you this much about the Steelers. If they hold on to Home Field advantage, you can pack your bags for Jacksonville. That's what I think it's going to come down to in the AFC.... who has Home Field for the Championship game. If the Pattsie's get it that would be a concern.... Of course the Steelers did make them and the Eagles look like Saint Mary's School for the Blind. But, at this point I'm just happy they won their division. That in and of its self makes it a successful season.... for all the teams who clinched their division.
