Hello!

Looking for a LD condenser for Under £100 for my first Mic. I CANNOT spend more than this. I want warmth and clarity. I will be using it on acoustic instruments (guitar/banjo/drums) and a range of my own experimental vocals from breathy and intimate to loud and aggressive. My choices are: Behringer B2 pro, Studio Projects B3, Rode NT1 (A)? be good to have the high pass and rolloff and variable pad.

any ideas?

I recorded my sister (vocals) with a SP B3, in my music profile. I liked it a lot. I'll be replacing it shortly.

I've heard people here giving great reviews on the Rode mic, I'm thinking that'll be my next mic after replaceing the B3.

I put my B3 a few feet out from my drummers kit (mostly on the kick) and it really livened up the whole sound. Replaced what I wasn't getting from my cheaper dynamic mics.

Note: The MXL990 is not a LARGE diaphragm condensor.

Sorry, that seemed a little terse...

The diaphragm in the MXL990 is not that large. At 20mm = .79" - about 3/4 of an inch. The body style belies the size of the "business end." Larger diaphragms can be found on the Behringer B1 and the like (Studio Projects etc.).

I got a twin-pack with an MXL990 along with the "pencil" style MXL991. The 991 is far superior sonically, but it's a little harder to get that proximity thing going on due to the directional nature, and shape of the mic. If you can try an MXL990 before you buy, so much the better. It might be just what you're looking for. Not expensive, and not too bad at all, but it is NOT a large diaphragm condensor.

Many thanks. Especially to the lofty
cricketer who, like me, is basking in the glory of the greatest Anglo-Welsh sporting victory since 1966.

Bonsoir.

I've used the 990 for male and female vocals with good results. The low price is hard to beat, but with it comes poor quality control. My $60 MXL may sound better or worse than yours under the same conditions. For the price, you're not risking that much for the possibility of a good mic. Don't how long it will hold up though.
