xtc, ya I saw them quite a while ago. My next to oldest sons mother turned me onto them. They are very radical opinion wise, but it is one hell of a show. I know several peeps who didnt realize they are both female.

They have some great tunes out there and there website is, well interesting to say the least.

My 2 all time favorites/influences are The Beatles & Foreigner. There are far too many to name that are just ever so slightly below those 2 though. :)

XTC-

Glad to see the ska influences! We seem to be rare on this board. For me, my influences are:

The Slackers
The Skatalites
Radiohead
King Tubby
Lee Perry
Hepcat
The Skalars
Victor Rice

...my influences are more old school ska/reggae & dub but man, you gotta love some of the 3rd wave/90's bands (The Pietasters, Bosstones, The Toasters, Fishbone, The Skoidats, etc.).

I dunno, I never thought a whole lot of Vivian personally, he was good, but I never thought "great" I just love Dio's music. He is the only person I have seen that sounds better live than on a studio LP. I saw the Last in Line tour, his last stop, as I recall was in Minneapolis. At the end of the show the whole stage crew got behind him on top the set and mooned Dio and the whole crowd, it was awesome.

I have a few different influences toward my style of music.

For drumming... a good portion of my roots have been developed through high school marching and jazz band. Due to my background, Chad Sexton (311) is also a favorite.

Guitar pieces... Ive always liked slow songs the best. For example, "goodnight" by dry kill logic. Nothing too complicated, but very well written none the less.

For the harder songs, as stupid as this may seem, I took a lot of style from a good friend of mine, who can play extremely fast riffs with ease. For that, I have always held a very great amount of respect for him.

Bass Guitar.. I have always liked very elaborate lines. So for that, I would have to say, Mudvayne.

Overall style, I would say I follow more closely along with bands like Nullset and Darwin's Waiting Room.

as far as personal musical taste... You can usually find Lacuna Coil in my CD player. I have never heard a voice quite like Christina's.

Kinda funny Walt, I own vinyl of everyone on your list. Yikes, now that is dating oneself.

Savoy Brown Rocks!

Procol Haram, and Traffic were 2 big influances on my Hammond B3 licks, as well as John Lord.

And the Strawberry Alarm Clock, My mind goes fuzzy thinking about those days, or maybe it was fuzzy in those days.

xtc, Skinny Puppy and KMFDM are 2 of my favorites from that genre. Lets not forget this kinda gross name, but they had some great stuff as well, Scraping Fetus off the Wheel. Not sure if any of ya have heard them but they were kinda pre Nine Inch Nails.

Loki, Einsturzende Neubauten is also a very good experimental band, made me look real hard at how and what to sample for insturments.

Murphy, do you remember any of Ministry before they became industrial. They were almost considered a disco type dance band. But they still had that nasty edge to them.

And what about Front Line Assembly?

And lest not forget The KLF!

Daft Punk anyone? Tuna has been digging in my Daft Punk collection and is getting into that poppy flowing electric sound.

One thing I definately love about the group of folks here at HRC, is the honesty. The lists above are definately not recgnized 'cool' lists. They reflect a lot of artists.

Coolo,
Withers was one of those 'WoW' finds for me. So simple, yet so full of soul and life. He really made me feel 'there' with him.

Crash,
The Byrds are an 'odd bird' for me. I can't say I liked them all that much in the 60's. But when they got back together and did things like 'From a distance' I really felt they had matured in their musicianship. I feel a sincerty in their work now.

Frontline Assembly is awesome, as is pigface, KMFDM, MDFMK, Skinny Puppy, Sister Machine gun I didn't get into really, although smash your radio still blairs our mt speakers every once in a while. Throbbing Gristle and Caberet Voltaire are in there as well, I mean Industrial and Goth are my genres... I'm the resident Industrial/Goth dude at HRC hehe... so chances are if they're in that genre I've at least heard em.

Noize - Yeah Einsturzende Neubauten are wonderful. They've got me using old machine parts and pipes and things in my music now, aside from the usual guitars and synths.

Also, no one forget the Blue Man Group. "We wanted to create the sounds of synths without using synths" paraphrase

Shame on me for not even thinking of BMG, I was just listening to them on Monday.

Loki, I have a couple Frontline limited disc's that are very inspiring. It is a bit more experimental sound then they usually had.

My favs/infuences tend to change from time to time. As a kid I'd have to say Skynyrd was the big one as my dad would always listen to them. I still love them now too.

Then in adolescence it was more like- nirvana, guns n roses, green day, offspring, smashing pumpkins. Out of this, I started playing guitar. Then came METALLICA. That was my obsession for about the next 2 or 3 years. All I would do is sit in my room and play along to metallica tunes. However, I started getting into classic rock like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd and such as well during that time period.

Then, as an older teen, I discovered Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai and started to chronically pursue ANYTHING musical that was seemed to cross the threshold of what a normal human should be capable of. It was all I listened to, all I talked about, and all I tried to play.

Nowadays, at age 23, I sometimes don't even know what I like anymore. I think whether or not I enjoy listening to something depends very greatly on my mood.

Lately, I'm starting to appreciate music from 'The Weather Channel' alot more.

Well Mike, Me thinks you might be in the right place. Granted I'm over twice your age. Yes humans are capable of existing for that long, and I definately felt that way. But here you get exposed to the majority of the music. Not the minority 'programed / production' crap. Something other than canned music with a list of perseritives longer than a morgage contract.

Member

Dec 30, 2004 11:32 pm

Canned music, that's a good term, I'll have to remember that one :-)

I'm not sure but I think my musical intensity and passion might be fading a bit. Or then again, I just may need to hear something to really get me inspired again.

It seems throughout my life, I would have one particular interest that I would focus on. For the longest time it was music and only music, but now since I started building my band's website ( www.soniclux.com if anyone's interested), I'm starting to get the feeling that webdesign might be that 'one thing' currently.

A couple years ago my mom told me that I was diagnosed with 'Asperger's syndome' (basically a much more functional form of autism) as a kid and that a 'one interest' lifestyle perfectly fits that profile.

I don't know, I really do still enjoy music greatly. Probably best not to over-analize it.

People at work think im psychotic because of the range of music i listen to, I can go from "the residents"(which apperantly 90% of the population doesnt get) to "the magnetic fields",to "shadowy men on a shadowy planet" and then top it all off with some good old CLUTCH. i try to mix it up my rotation as much as possible, but apparently this is a sign of multiple personalities according to my co-workers. :)

Ya Mike,

No sense in dwelling on an 'eieio'. The only folks that don't have one are the ones that havn't discovered theirs yet. My wife went to a seminar on Asperger's a couple of months ago. She was so struck she had to call me from the seminar and exclaim 'I know what you are!...Your an Assberger!' Slight modification of tonal emphasis on her part. Eieio's are like Genre's, a lot of labels that sometimes help, sometimes confuse, and seldom fit perfectly. So your focused. In many circles that is a plus!

I have a friend via music; a guitar player. Bonified, certified, USDA grade A choice Psycotic. Steady job, great guitar player, Fabulous composer, lyricist. On occasion we will have to postpone a recording session because he has 'bugs' on him. He will simply state 'I have bugs', well I don't, but I do, know what I mean?' and we will wait a day or two for them to go their marry way. Hell, I've postponed sessions because I had a fart cought crossways!

Nae worries mate!
