i'm this close to selling my audigy platinum...

after reading everyones opinions on the soundblaster audigy platinum, i just want to sell it as soon as i can, however when i look at other sites they have nothing but praise for the series such as computermusic.co.uk
I probably will end up selling it and i'm looking for some help with choosing a replacement. I'm getting a behringer UB1204-pro which seems like a wise buy, and i'm gonna need to be able to plug it into the sound card and i will also need midi ins and outs, but as i use all vst instruments i wouldn't need any midi sounds on it (they are normally quite bad anyway unless you pay a lot) I'm looking into the m-audio range, possibly the Audiophile 2496, and i don't think i'd feel the need for anything with more than 2 outs and 2 ins. Would these be balanced inputs? or can you only get balanced with xlr? any response would be greatly appreciated, the shops are generally quite biased so i can't really ask them for help.

What do you mean the shops are biased? Please explain.
Thanks,

i didn't mean that as a serious comment, although sometimes I find that if they are trying to get rid of some old stock, or have a deal set up with a manufacturer, they will praise a product when there could be another one at a similar price which does the job better... by the way, if I don't go for a soundcard with the unbalanced rca's and instead i go for a card without midi like the Echo MIA, would i be able to plug my usb midi keyboard straight into a usb port without going through the soundcard?

I agree. I've been pushed on some bad equipment online and off. Everything from guitars to cars. I guess I've really learned from it. I've been BSed so many time time I can just completely read a salesman now.
Yeah, if you're thinking "M-Audio" I then myself and a number of others here at HRC can recommend them. I've been using the Delta 44 for over two years and I love it. My friend Jim owns the SB Exigy which is just an Audigy in an external box. He bought it for home recording and now seems very dissapointed in it. Oh, dont get me wrong, if you're into video games these things are AWESOME. I was blown away by the graphics and sound of Battlefield 1942.
As for the USB keyboards, yes! That's what they are for. There should be software included with your keyboard that installs the drivers needed for your OS to recognize the device as a midi controller. Another alternative would be to use a MIDI to USB breakout converter like the MidiMan USB MidiSport 2x2. That would allow you to later expand your controller arsenal into non-USB devices. I think I'm selling my MidiSport 2x2 if you're interrested, but I'm no shady salesman; I admit I've never even used the thing. -j

thanks for the feedback, as much as i'd love to, it'll be a while till i buy more keyboards, as funds are quite limited :) The question is will I be losing much quality with those RCA plugs on the audiophile? i plan to buy decent cable, but its still supposed to pick up buzz and stuff. what factors do you think affect this buzz/hum? would I be better off with the Echo MIA, does anyone know anything about it? Ive heard that RCA just aren't suitable for good quality audio

that Delta 44 looks quite nice for a similar price although what would I do with the 4 outs on that card when i'm recording to my computer?

The Audiophile's quality is exceptional!!
I'am sure the Delta 44 is the same but with more in/outs but I think it has no MIDI ins or outs.
If you just need one pair of in/outs I think the Audiophile is hard to beat, go for it and as dB said to me "Welcome to the pro soundcard world"

i think i'll end up going for the audiophile but i'd like to investigate into the RCA vs 1/4 inch or 1/8 inch jacks route. I'm hugely looking forward to getting my new equipment, I'm gonna go for the behringer UB1204 mixer, a compressor such as the composer pro, and the audiophile card. Microphone wise I think i'm gonna get the rode NT1 to record piano, vocals, acoustic guitar and drum overheads. Is there a better mic in this price range? i've heard comments on the rode being a bit 'crisp' although whatever condensor i get, it will probably end up sounding great to me after years or naff microphones :) i've heard good things about the akg's too.

I have the Audiophile and it has been flawless to this point. That said I have only been using it a couple months.

Simply put, the Audigy is a gamers card, it is not, and has never been, considered a serious audio recording card. Can it do it, sure it can, but not well, and not under the pressure of many tracks of audio syncing with several tracks of Midi data and the like.

Creative Labs can say it's a card for musician's until thy are blue in the face, it's a lie, it's all marketing garbage. Any ol' card can say they are "Full Duplex" because you can play a game with it while speaking to another player and hearing him (or her) speak back. Even a modest home recording studio demands much more than that from a sound card.

And considering it is not uncommon to see the SB "Platinum" series cards for a couple hundred dollars it's laughable since a good M-Audio card (like the Audiophile) is well under that price mark. M-Audio, EchoAudio and the like are just not marketed to gamers and not seen at BestBuy company or CompUSA.

I agree with mick, stores want to sell what they have, and sometimes just what they have too many of regardless of what you need. Not always, but sometimes.

That is why places like this exist. To get the real story from real people that use stuff the way you use it...really...
