I picked up another amp today... a nice 'lil Fender Ultimate Chorrus 2x12 combo... pristine condition. Very loud and bright... 'Fender bright', that is. Sitting in a dusty closet for years, this amp, just like most of the amps I have, has a dirty pot... the 'bass' pot to be precise.
What's the best way to clean 'em???
I'm all-ready to go with some contact cleaner, but am unsure as to application, and how long these things may need to 'sit' before being turned on again, or any other method that, unbeknownst to most of the world, that works better, and is only found-out by asking this particular stash of knowledgeable people.

Oct 16, 2007 06:18 pm I would think you could just use an electrical contacts parts spray. I know I used to have some stuff that was basically canned air with alcohol in it.

Oct 16, 2007 06:28 pm Just make sure it doesn't have a lubricant in it. That will make dust stick even worse.

Oct 17, 2007 03:08 am Have you looked at the pot? Is it closed in on the backside or can you see the slide when you turn the pot?
If it's closed in you won't be able to clean it as it is sealed. Just try turning it back and forth a bunch and see if that clears it up. Otherwise, replace it.

As an admin I shouldn't have, but jeez, everybody else let me down by not taking advantage of a totally obvious joke...

Oct 17, 2007 06:38 pm Thankyou dB, and forty.
glnflrs: It is closed in the back, so I'll try the 'turning back and forth thing tonight... thankyou, as well.
Hope this works... if it doesn't, I'll probably have a go with the stuff that I bought that claims to be good for such problems... the so-called "contact-cleaner", before replacement. Why would they make this stuff 'for' it, if it's not?
We shall see.
Oct 17, 2007 07:29 pm For cleaning the pot I, personally, use the tiny scrubbing bubbles that scrub the bowl so you don't have to...

Go here, this stuff has never ever failed me in over 35 years. It has been around for over 50 years and is the defacto contact cleaner. An old TV repair man turned me onto it when my Twin Reverb was acting up back in like 1970 or so. I have never used anything else.

Oct 17, 2007 09:24 pm Thanks Noize ! That sounds like the ticket... I'm glad I waited a bit.
Twisting her knobs on the new one made things a bit better too, but the others may need some serious help.
Cheers guys.

Oct 17, 2007 09:36 pm Ya, they have several different types to choose from.
Oct 18, 2007 09:01 am good 'ole contact cleaner from the nearest electronics store does great IF you wanna get rid of the 'scratchyness' you're hearing while adjusting....but if that's not the problem, i'd go with replacing it.

Nov 06, 2007 10:52 pm I've posted the a similar a while ago and ended up with deoxit, I like it and is borderline affordable, $15 for a medium size can.
Spray -turn left /right a few times then take an air cleaner to dry out the excess fast.
Nov 08, 2007 09:00 pm does it work on sliders too?

Nov 08, 2007 09:21 pm Deoxit works on everything electronic.
Jan 01, 2008 05:28 pm Deoxit are some of the best contact cleaners on earth. Just remeber to exersice the potetiometer as you spray. But, please! DO NOT GO TO RADIO SHACK FOR ANY PARTS!!!!! Radio Shack has the worst line of componets I have ever worked with. Try these two places first. www.mouser.com or www.digikey.com
They are mail order, so it does take alittle time. But, it is worth it. Also you will need to take some measurments of the potentiometer to insure you are buying the right one. Such as shaft dia. and lenth. Also type. ie. wire wound, carbon composit. 90% of all gtr. amps have carbon composit.
Jan 07, 2008 04:21 pm Hey guys! Got an update for buying potentiometers. www.cedist.com They carry just about all brands of guitar amp products. Such as pots, caps, resistors, and speakers. As they put it,"Everything except the wood."

Jan 07, 2008 11:20 pm If you use DeNatured alcohol (lower H2O content) pour a conservative amount while turning back and forth and see if that helps. This won't damage anything as long as power is removed and it has evaporated.
FYI: Also DeNatured Alcohol is really good for bringing back the life of Bass strings... at least well enough to stave off a $35 purchase of new ones for a while.
Jan 08, 2008 01:47 pm Please do not use denatured alcohol. The goverment has now put a chemical in it to stop people from drinking it. This chemical will damage electical componetes.
