John Kerry

I am surprised nobody has mentioned this yet. Kinda funny, unless you are a Kerry fan. Mega-stupid thing to say regardless of intent.

Not sure whats more funny, the fact the "joke" failed so badly, or the fact Kerry thinks he has a sense of humor and attempted a joke at all...

Seems ironic that he's holding a pair of eyes, cause we were told that Saddams army were taking peoples eyes as a torture when they first invaded Kuwait!

Yeah, it was a pretty lame attempt at being funny and it backfired hard.

My local radio show was making fun of him this morning. They called him on the phone (fake of course) and he proceeded to tell us how he botched the joke but had been working on new material.

Q: How do you get a soldier of your front porch?
A: Pay for the pizza!!!

They made some pretty good jabs at him and I had a few chuckles on the way to work. But yeah, smooth move Kerry :)

I heard the sound clip on the radio yesterday. All I'm going to say is that I don't fall for the "joke" spin that he's tried to put out there now. He meant what he said and it had nothing to do with Bush.

Now the Dems want an apology too...

I suggest Mr Kerry fly under the radar until after the election is over...

i'm real curious to hear 30 seconds before and after the soundbyte......all they've played on both right and left wing talk radio is just that one line...and it IS a stupid thing to say, but the whole 'context' agrument has perked my curiousity, espicially why everyone on the radio is gooin' WAY out of their way NOT to play a good solid 45 second soundbite of before/durring/after....and was there any laughter in the crowd? i doubt it. heh kerry has cancled the next few 'engagements' on his artinary! haha

It just goes to show you how one screw up can ruin an entire career! I'm convinced that h meant no harm by it, but that doesn't matter. He said it, and he took too long to apologize for it.

The damage is done, thus making Hillary a shoe-in for the Democratic nod in 2008. Let's hope the Republicans can come up with a reasonable alternative. Just once I'd like to be able to vote for the best candidate, not the lesser of two evils.

Hillary is far from a shoe-in, there is still this rising democrat, Barack Obama, who could very well get the nod.

I hope Hillary wins tho, that would almost assure loss for the dems...

That said, I am sure Kerry mis-spoke, I doubt he meant to slam military persons, but damn, the spin he tried was sooooooo lame.

Lame indeed.... I hate how anytime something bad that happens, the opposite political party is always blamed for adding fuel to the fire, as if it's their fault that you screwed up in the first place.

If you put your foot in your mouth, you're gonna hear about it. Quit whining and blaming someone else and suck it up.

Both sides do it, and it sucks.

I think it was said as intended. He just let down his guard and screwed up.

Dems HAVE to pull out a moderate to have any hope in 2008 ... but they won't they'll nominate Clinton, who will get creamed if McCain gets the GOP nod. Dems owe a lot of their current success to "anyone but bush" republicans.

is there any transcript or soundbyte of what he said IN context??? so far, it's ALL been about that one sentance...i don't get it, NOBODY is playin' a longer clip, this leads me to believe that maybe there is more to the story....what an idiot though.

it's kinda funny that over 50% of military members have a 4 year degree, let alone the # of people that have an AA . It's be come more and more of a must for promotion. I personally hold a BA,BS and an AA, and i'm "stuck in Iraq." how the hell did this happen .

i can't wait to hear what bill maher says about this. for god's sake, kerry, what the HELL is wrong with you? certainly he is on the side of the troops, that's not in doubt: no politician would DARE say anything to the contrary. but two things irk me: one is that kerry is a huge problem for democrats: time and again he makes a big mistake when he should know better. he should know by now to make sure that he provides no fodder for anyone. god how i wish he'd go away. the other thing is that republicans were being way intellectually dishonest. obviously he's not talking about the troops, and pinning him like that and deliberately spinning it out of control, well...that's a really terrible thing. what it does it says that those people are willing to go to any length to have some political armament, to change the news cycle, to put democrats on the defensive... even if it means bending the truth into something it absolutely isnt! how disrespectful to american voters. how stupid they must think us. sadly, they know that some people will fall for this bent truth. double-sadly, they choose to capitalize on that.

intellectual dishonesty: anyone who commits it knowingly doesn't value the truth at all and is a big dang jerk. it's just no way to be. in politics especially.

I dunno, forty, it certainly sounded like he was to me...I don't see that as obvious at all.

One thing that is obvious is that this is one of those situations that one will hear what one wants to hear. If you are a liberal, Kerry fan, or whatever, you will likely immediately hear a misstatement, if not, you will likely hear a blast on the troops.

The bottom line, in my mind is that he said what he said, and to me it was pretty blatantly saying "if you don't study and get smart you'll be in the military". Which is weird considering he was in the military, however, his grades very college were lower than Bush's, so, perhaps he speaks from experience.

the reason i said he's not talking about the troops is because you would have to be brain dead as a politician to criticize the troops. politically, it is a death sentence. it CAN'T have been what he meant. there's is no one--no politician--who would do that.

i'm not a kerry fan--i hate the man and like don imus wish would simply stop talking, completely, never show his face again.

but his stupid, terrible explanation as to his original intent must be the real deal, db. it would have been senseless to criticize the troops. think about it. it can't have been the intent, no matter how it looks.

I'm thinking it was a mental slip, he was thinking of a way to dis bush, but his speech wasn't caught up to what he was thinking.

So he said what he said, which sounded anti-troop, but he was actually thinking anti-bush.

Like, in his head, he heard "if you don't get an education, you'll be stuck with a war in Iraq, like our president"

I'm thinking that being on the pedestal, in the limelight, doesn't always let you think things out clearly.

I'm leaning that he wouldn't dis the troops directly, but actually just had a slipped train-of-thought.

I completely 100% agree that it would be the stoopidest thing in the world for him to do, I have said I do not believe that is what he meant, but, it IS what he said.

Thoughts of Gore and that other doofus come to mind, always saying things that they haven't thought through.

Maybe it's a dem party requirement =)

I still say he meant it. Any normal human being corrects themselves after they say something wrong to avoid someone misunderstanding them. I could be wrong, but thats just how I see it.

Well, him being such a proud vet of vietnam (have you guys heard he served, he only says it every speech he gives) I would say it's likely he didn't really mean it, but you are right, after the crickets stopped chirping one would take one of two routes, ignore it and keep moving or stop and correct yourself...as a professional politician, you think he would have known the ignoring it and moving on route wasn't the right choice, politics is made up of soundbites, and he gave the media the ultimate soundbite.

Do any of you know how long he served in nam? Apperantly it was very short, a couple months or so. In a support role, far from the real war. Kind of like USO really is what I have read. Not sure about the truth in it though.

one again--wow this is weird--i find myself agreeing with db more than i would have thought possible. (this is getting scary).

diemusik, kerry certainly didn't mean to insult the troops. noooooo way. nobody's that stupid, not even kerry. but db, you're right: it IS what he said, even though his intent was certainly elsewhere.

so while i don't think kerry is stupid enough to really intend to insult the troops, he is like the world's biggest idiot/fool all over again for doing it accidentally and providing this sound byte.

there is no better way to say it:

(don imus:) "stop talking. just stop...talking."

It's my understanding that kerry served a couple months in nam but was in a combat role. He was 'wounded out' get enough purple hearts and they assume your luck is up. the problem the swift boat vets stated was that some of his wounds were self inflicted/extremely minor. sort of like stubbing your toe hard while in a combat zone anf gettng a purple heart.

That was it zek, 2 months in combat, although it wasn't in the middle of it all. And indeed, I read it was the majority of the wounds were of a very minor variety. The self inflicted part I had not heard yet. But indeed, just like our Navy Seal, Jesse. It sounds like he has a big problem remembering exactly what happened. :-)
