My record player is a jerk

Lately, it's been doing this thing where it drops the needle on the record for about a second, and then picks it right back up and puts it away again. I then have to wait for it to stop spinning and put the arm back in the rest position before I can hit start again, which takes about 30 seconds. I have to repeat this process about 20 or 30 times before it finally gets the hint that I want to listen to more than the first 2 seconds of the record.

Right now, it's finally had it, and so have I, because I'm going on 50 starts and I still haven't gotten it to play. Any idea what the hell is wrong with it? Maybe it just doesn't like Elvis Costello as much as I do?

Never anthropomorphise record players...they don't like it.

Hey, I wouldn't have to call it a jerk if it would just play the damn record.

What, like, on the top?

I very, very vaguely remember my dad having a penny taped to the arm of his record player... but I don't remember where or why... then again I was about 2 years old when he died...

My turntable has a counter weight on the end that adjusts the downward force of the needle. I thought that most turntables do as well. This would eliminate the penny trick.

A common trick used by "scratch" type DJ's.

A good idea, however this can prematurely wear out your records if it's too heavy...
Go for the lightest weight coin possible and place it as close to the fulcrum of the arm as possible to still achieving the desired result

a blob of blu-tac works the same but doesn't look as "old-school"

I do believe it is probably the mechanism that resets the tone arm after play is finished. The switch might be stuck. If you can remove the bottom of the player or sometimes the switch is visable near the rear of the tone arm. You can look to see if it is stuck. It is just a little trigger switch that when the LP is finished the tone arm mech bangs into it and triggers the reset/rest sequance which then turns the motor off and sets the tone arm up into the cradle.

I tused to happen with some of my older players and my old Thornes turntable, but never with my newer ones.
