Adding two channels via S/PDIF with separate devices possible?

Need some advice from someone a little more knowledgeable than me. Take the card I have: A Delta 1010LT. It has an S/PDIF in. S/PDIF can carry 2 channels of audio. That could bump up my total Ins to 10, from the 8 analog ins already provided.

So say I find something like the dbx 376 - a channel strip with a preamp, comp, and de-esser. It has a S/PDIF out. Great!

But its only one preamp. Do you think it would be possible to string up two of these somehow and send them out on one S/PDIF cable into the 1010?? If so, how ??

Thanks.

hmmm that's a really good question. off the top of my head i'd hafta say no...i could be wrong but i don't know of any way to 'merge' two individual SPDIF channels into one cable....i'd look into a two channel pre with spdif output....

I have to agree with WYD. I believe that the S/PDIF will carry a stereo, digital signal. Linking two (by a splitter or something) will still give you a stereo digital signal. Not necessarily two separate tracks.

Thanks, guys.

I don't really get it, but I can only find the ART Digital MPA as a two-channel preamp with S/PDIF out. Is there really only this one product on the market??

Why bother with the integrated system. Get yourself a decent stereo a/d with s/pdif out. Then you can hook up any mic pre you like...

orowheat, there are others on the market but the ART is the only one within your budget that will do what you want.

orowheat, I believe that there's only 2 conductors on the spdif connector, tip, and sleeve. This would mean that the two digital signals are sent along the same conductor, not a problem with computers, as the packets are already addressed with headers, telling the receiving computer what to do with them. That's problably why you'd need an preamp (or similar) to do this.

I'm just thinking out loud, I could be wrong.

Yep, s/pdif sends both left and right signal down one cable. It does however use 2 cables for a complete set up. One for input and one for output.

I did find a merger, but the output was AES on an XLR and I figure it's spendy. See "Smart Merge" on this page:

I found a relatively inexpensive solution to this just now. Samson's C-valve preamp runs about $80 and has s/pdif out. It also has a digital link which allows you to connect any additional single channel pre with a balanced out and use the samson digital out to run both preamps on seperate (left and right) channels. The art tps, the next stereo digital pre option runs about $250, so if you got a c-valve and a cheap art pre you could have a stereo s/pdif setup for just under $125.

Anyone else think that maybe the sync might be off doing things this way?

I could be wrong, just thinking out loud. Anyone have any experience with multiple INs like this?
