My youngest got her orange belt

After a full year of hard work, my four year old was given her orange belt. You can see from the picture she was pretty excited

while she does not know everything required for an orange belt rank, the instructor said at her age she has put in a full year that she deserves the belt as much as anybody. I think it was an awesome gesture to spark the enthusiasm of a kid.

Here she is with her big sister who is now a purple belt

Here she is getting her "pin" which for little kids is a light little kick in the tummy just enough to knock her down

For adults "the pin" is significantly more than a "light little kick in the tummy" and gets worse the higher belt rank you are.

Just wanted to share my little moment of fatherly pride.

That's great! What a kick-*** family.

My boy keeps looking into the local martial arts place with excitement. They won't take him until he's five. Three and a half now....He knows it's just a matter of waiting. Might have to show him these pics.

Lindsey started at 3 1/2 and she loves it. Not much martial arts at first, mostly just motor skills and stuff, but still good stuff. She's learning kicks and punches and stuff now, we grapple at home, it's a riot. if I get into fighting stance in front of her she lunges ofrward and thai kicks me in the shin and chops at me, it's funny...she really hauled of on grandpa the other day too...it's funny to watch.

Just don't get into a school where they hand out belts like candy so you kid winds up a "black belt" by age 8...thats just not cool.

Right. I'm going to look for something around here. I want him to enjoy it, and get the discipline, fitness, and understanding of it all - rather than just a bunch of meaningless awards. He has one uncle who is a black belt in Aikido (sp?) - an ex Army Ranger, and another uncle who is a black belt in Ju Jitsu(sp?)ex airborne, so he'll find plenty of encouragement.

If they do take them as young as 3-1/2, perhaps I need to do some homework.

Anyway, dB-wan, congratulations. When you wrote about your "pin" recently, it scared the heck out of me!

Aikido, now that is something that interests my wife, but anybody I know that is high ranking in that is like a shinto religious practicer or something like that, it seems to get very spiritual in the high ranks...

JiuJitsu, man, I train some of that too, thats hard stuff, hard on the body but a lot of fun, I HOPE I can get my blue belt in Jiujitsu this year, but I dunno if I will cuz I have dialed back on that training to spend more time with my family.

Yeah, the pin for my green belt scares me to death, I think he'll prolly just cut my head off or something...

At least having good experienced martial artists in your family you can get some great advice regarding whats a good school and what isn't.

here is something funny about JiuJitsu

Congrats dB! My daughter took Aikido classes here at the UI when she was about 12. She really enjoyed it...

Thanks DungBeatle.

For those of you that didn't get what TallChap was referring to regarding my "pin" read this www.homerecordingconnecti...=9441&frm=4 it sparked a pretty interesting conversation.

BWahahahahahahahahah! That made coffee come out of my nose....

My brother-in-law who's the big Aikido chap really doesn't talk much about it. He simply says, as soon as someone attacks me, it's all over.

Yeah, thats kind of Aikido in a nutshell as I understand it, it's all defensive. To me that was one mark on the bad side. Good in theory, but I looked for something a little more offensive, if you know danger is emminent, strike first, strike hard and strike often...which is exactly what Kenpo is...which is, I guess why I really dug it.

Hell, the last technique I learned was how to take someone out while shaking their hand :-) I like that. It is also how Kenpo is different from many arts, actually, in practicality and in usage I see a lot similar between Kenpo and Aikido, both often use the momentum of the assailant against them...

As far as my green belt pin, I have two theories regarding what I expect:

1- it's just like the last one, only perhaps a few rounds

2- it's a little lighter but against 2 or more opponents

I am hoping it's 2 cuz I think it'd be less painful but more fun and educational...however, my instructor seems to be into giving pain :-)
