Does Anyone Know How to Write Triphop?

So I've finally been asked to do my first project, a friends local indie film (hey it's not much, but it's something). Unfortunately, it's not a standard orchestrated film score, rather this thing I've never heard of, "triphop." I did some research to seek out a few bands who claim to use this style, but it hasn't really shown much. All "triphop" seems to be different. Does anyone here know exactly how I should go about this?

Thanks.

check for dj shadow. They basically invented the term to fit the music he was making cuz it didn't really have a genre. Trip hop is generally considered to be sample based music, with generally Hip Hopish drums and creative use of samples to create an interesting soundscape. Or at least this is what it used to be. It may have gradually changed so that this meaning no longer applies (like breakbeat did). I haven't really kept up on the genre so much.

Coolo has it pretty much there. Check out DJ Shadows album Endtroducing. That is the one that really got it for me. I know Tricky is also considered TripHop but he pushes the boundries of it very hard. Focus more on the music of it rather then the lyrical parts. Although with DJ Shadow the vocal becomes part of the music. Even the spoken parts flow evenly throughout his stuff. If you can find it some very early Moby stuff as well bordered on the genre as well. But then again he was influanced by DJ Shadow in that respect.

entroducing is an interesting album. i dont know too much about triphop, but i know you will need drum loops and samples, a lot of em. my korg triton has a lot of preset triphop-style drum beats for some reason. the drums sound like they were sucked off of old vinyl records and they kind of chug along in a laid back chill way, many of them.

There seems to be a lot of dub influences in trip-hop. The reggae/dub producer, Mad Professor, has even dabbled in trip-hop. Mad Professor did of adub version of Massive Attack's album "Protection". It is called "No Protection - Massive Attack vs Mad Professor". Good stuff.

Cheers!

This is the kind of thing I have so far. I really don't think this is what the style calls for. If you have heard the other song I posted you'll know I'm a lot more accustomed to writing for full orchestra; I really don't know how to go about writing this...

I can't spell.

The synth's and all were good the beat was meh. Listen to sneaker pimps for a more hip hop beat heavy synth style, or Morcheba for a more jazzy sound. Try making the beats with a stronger kick and less reverb, should be real low end sounding. Just think rap on lsd.

I just started to get into trip hop a couple weeks ago so my advice might not be too helpful. To me, it seems like tempo of this piece is a little too slow. Also, the triphop i listen to (dj shadow, dj krush, ect..) usually has a pretty straight forward beat some cool fills every once and a while. There doesn't seem to be too much reverb on the drums. What you have right now could possible work as an intro (?) if you broke into a more straight forward type thing.

Well honestly all trip hop is not the same. Listen to DJ Shadow and then listen to Tricky. There are 2 entirely differant movements, but both based around the genre.

Fuzzy, I would like to heare were you go with this piece. I honestly dont think you are too far off with the direction you are going. I personally like the reverb soaked percusion, it adds a very deep feel to it. Of coarse as things progress it might be too much, but that will remain to be seen.

Look forward to hearing what you do with this.

I agree, needs to be more straightforward. I really like the trippy sounds of the keys. bring out the bass more too. Enjoyed it!

Here's another sample I've been playing around with. I don't know, it still just doesn't have the trippy feeling while maintaining the hip hop style the film is calling for (it's about an underground group of heroine addicts or something like that, I haven't scanned the whole thing yet).

I would like to add some really gentle voice over the lone base/drum part, but my good mic is broken right now.

I enjoyed this very much. But I don't feel it being trip-hop yet. Check out the wav file drum loop samples here:

Fuzzy, you are almost there. Here are a couple Dj Shadow tracks to have a listen to. They are 2 differant type tracks, but they give you an idea of how the beats and instruments mix together. And meld in and out of the track. Go here and grab them. Let me know as soon as you have them as I dont want to leave them up.

Yep, its kool. Just dont want to be called a Pirate. I put em up to get Fuzzy the idea of what started it all out. Hope it turns ya onto him. I have been listening to his stuff since before he made the first disc. Very creative use of samples and such, he is a genious in his use of samplers. Well at least one of the genious out there. Paul Hardcastle was another who used samplers in a very differant way. But DJ Shadow took to loading full on loop's long before the idea was ever thought of by the software loop app guys like ACID and the like.

DungBeatle, dont worry about deleting them. I am sure the influance police wont come looking for you for picking up on the good stuff.

Fuzzy, I think youve got it. In fact I know youve got it now. The groove is right on and the sounds are hitting home. I like the little vocal sample in there as well. I know DJ Shadow was very heavy into mixing both lo-fi and new sounds. I think that is what really set him apart as sometimes he really blurred the line between the two.

But anyway, like I said. I think youve got the idea down now.
