I'm looking at upgrading my setup by adding a RME Hammerfall HDSP5296 soundcard and a Focusrite Octopre Preamp. My problem is that my plan is have the preamp in my right rack while my computer is located in my left rack. They are almost 12' feet apart and I am wondering if I buy long toslink cables (say 15' or so), will I have problems transmitting from the Octopre to the Computer. Anybody have experience with this? Thanks guys.

Dec 22, 2005 10:42 am Ive used almost 10 meters with ADAT lightpipe with no problems.
Dec 22, 2005 11:05 am i'm pretty sure we've got hundreds of fiberoptic cables gooin' across the Atlantic Ocean to Europe....so yeah the speed of light is ummm well, fast.

Dec 22, 2005 09:10 pm So ya, the answer would be you can go that distance it appears without any ill effect's.
Dec 24, 2005 12:01 am Actually, there are distance limits, at least for consumer use. Don't remember exactly what they are, but even fiber optic cable is not 100% efficient. Its's advantage is that lots of channels can be transmitted via light waves, its light weight (no pun intended), and totally resistant to rf and other audio interference. I did recently read that signal boosters are needed every ??? meters.

Dec 24, 2005 12:14 am Ya, the distance limits are approx. 15 meter's or so. But he is using Pro level equipment which is sending a much differant signal then consumer grade equipment will. Higher quality and so on.
They have however proven that greater distance in this type of equipment can be done, but again it is dependant on the quality of the signal being supplied.

Dec 24, 2005 04:57 pm I heard without a relay fiber could go 40km (for network traffic)... but the signal will be like an 1.5 mile XLR cable :) ...ie it _can_ go that far... but shouldn't...
