...about 2 minutes ago I saw lightning strike the ground about 300m from my house. It was so loud it almost broke the windows! Man, my heart is racing. I hope nobody is hurt (I live in the city).

If you read the manual Furmans (or other surge protectors) arn't guaranteed to protect against very close lightning strikes because a huge amount of voltage can pass through the fuse as it blows.

Actually, those units are decent at power conditioning, but not much better at surge protection than any cheap surge protecting power strip...

And asking ANYTHING to protect you from a LIGHTING strike, is asking a lot.

Here's the story from this mornings newspaper. I can't believe that we were that close and didn't lose power.

Power lost in 10,000 homes after lightning
News Services
Thursday, November 03, 2005

Surrey residents were hit hard by lightning last night, with 10,000 homes losing power.

The first lighting strike hit at 6:45 p.m., cutting power to 2,700 homes from 76th and 104th avenues and 132nd and 184th streets.

Five minutes later, 3,600 homes lost power between 96th Avenue and 104th Avenue between 131st and 140th streets. Half an hour later, 3,500 homes between 96th and 108th avenues and 124th and 138th streets also lost power due to lighting.

A power surge also delayed the start of the Canucks game at General Motors Place just before 7 p.m. and caused the escalators of some Vancouver SkyTrain stations to stop.

Back in August we had a sudden storm. When I first heard thunder, I shut down the studio and unplugged everything. About 30 seconds later, lightning hit a tree in our front yard and came in on the power line to our meter. Fried my garage door openers, modems to both kids computers, our network router, and tripped several circuit breakers including one of the main breakers. All in all, bout $800 USD. Glad I had the studio gear unplugged. Filing an insurance claim is a big mistake if u don't have major damage, so I just fixed everything myself. Already had 3 major claims over the past 15 years (fire due to a faulty fireplace, a hurricane, and a tropical storm). Didnt file when lightning hit about 6 years ago and fried my Carver receiver, and didn't file when an ice storm put a bunch of huge pine limbs on the roof in 2003. I keep hoping the odds will turn in my favor, but I have my doubts!

I was in a tent on Mount Charleston outside of Las Vegas when a storm came up. Our Dobermans were tied up on metal chains outside the tent. We heard lightening strike nearby and my dogs got spooked.

It struck again closer and my dogs were jumping on the tent to come in with us. I was worried about their metal leashes and we are all under trees which they tell you to never do. Hello? We're in a forest. Trees everywhere.

I took the dogs off the leash and they were very happy to get in the tent with us but the next strike was on the tree right next to the tent. That tree had been struck before too, you could tell.

One branch of the lightening leapt from the tree in through the side of the tent and into my girlfriends hip and out her big toe. I felt a very small shock in my pinky toe even though I'm wearing rubber shoes.

My dog had lay down in the corner but she jumped up screaming when it hit. I never heard a doberman cry before but I did then. The female was scared to death. We left the tent there and ran down the mountain with lightening crashing down everywhere.

Some people were still hiking up and didn't have our level of fear at all. When we got to the car, lightening struck nearby on the road where we could see it really well just as my girlfriend was putting the metal key in the metal door. Sheesh.

We went to the ranger station and they said a bolt had come through the roof and struck the counter about 5 minutes before right where I was leaning on it.

My girlfriends toe was a little black and the bottom of her foot was a bit red.

She went to the doctor to get an electrocardiogram but she was fine.

An exciting time was had by all.

When we went back for the tent later,it had a melted mark on the side where it entered but no hole.
