Having trouble with this mix because the hi-hat is too prominant in the snare. DOH!, and it's too late now for me to re-record it. I also think it was raining on the tin roof of my shed when we recorded this. Also his guitar cabinet is resonating at a low frequencies like it had a broken cone. I had to take lots of lows out of the guitars to try and hide the strange phenomenon. I cannot beleive I didnt notice it before... but then, when it is pelting down on a tin roof above you, I guess you miss things someimes..eek.
We did the vocals on a seperate day because of the rain.

Any suggestions for improvements?

To get the hat down I'd say the most likely chance you have to do it is with EQ, take some of the highs down, it may also remove a little of the "crack" of the snare, so you gotta tread lightly.

The other option is to MIDI those two...tho, since they likely bled into other mics, you'll have to be very precise.

Just a thought here, on your web site for The Rock Factory...the main content frame is way to small, very annoying to read, maybe you should make the logo smaller so the actual content that people read can be a little bit bigger...

Just food for thought, not that I know anything at all about web design or development...so take it with a grain of salt.

Hey dB, No worries! I don't know anything about web design either. I used word! lol! I'll see what I can do about making the logo smaller.

Yeah, The snare lacked crack, so I boosted some frequencies which also boosted the hi-hat, but at least the snare sounds better than it did before (not the best snare I've ever recorded), and perhaps that is more impostant than the hi-hat problem? hmmm.
The problem is the band is gonna come and pick it up soon, The midi thing might take ages, and there was no click. Is it really as bad as I think it is? Not sure, but sometimes I lose perspective with my mixes.

This is the other song that was recorded at the same time. My room mate say he likes this one better... Not as much open highhat in this one, so the bleed is not so noticeable, Though there was a hell of a lot of vocal pitch shifting in this one. Not sure if that is noticable.

that's hilarious. It's sweet to find so much experience in the music recording industry. Seems like a cool group in this one. It really helps that the moderator (dB) is active too, so we don't get those 34 page long pissing matches and stuff..haha

I've listened to Hearts Ablaze 6 or 7 times now. I think the band will like it.

Story of a Champion sounded pretty decent in my crappy headphones.. The panning the guitar was a nice effect. Since it was mentioned, in my headphones, it sounds like the hi hat and snare weren't quite as sharp as they could have been?

All in all it sounds pretty good though. You can sorta tell the vocals are tweaked a bit... like they aren't real... steady, and solid when he hits a note. Is that what pitch shifting does?

Well, its just when he hit the wrong notes, or didnt hold it steady, I tried to correct it. Tried is the operative word here.
The snare was kinda crappy. But like you, I do really like the songs, even if it was not the best inputs to mix with.

Yeah, good songs for sure. I guess only those with perfect pitch don't have to worry about pitch shifting (my sister's one of them, I'm jealous...lol).

eeek, what If I've "corrected" the notes to a completely different note than he was trying to sing... I guess I'll find out soon ;-)

lol... maybe he INTENDED to be off by a half note ;) Actually, my sister had a violinist play for her senior recital (one of her compositions for an oboe and a violin and synth music).

The oboe was out of tune, and they couldn't get it in tune. So they adjusted the synth tune to match the oboe, and the violinist just adjusted too... that guy was freaking amazing. lol... The pitch shifting just reminded me of that...heh.

I don't have perfect pitch, but when I'm trying to "fix" a word and the autotune plugin at times just seems to bung it up and make it worse sometimes, then instead, I'll sing it to myself (what I think it should be with the rest of the song), and then adjust the pitch of the word till it sounds about right.
Must be a funny thing to listen to and watch... me singing to the computer.

A pirate walks into a bar with a ship's wheel in his pants.

The bartender asks the pirate "do you realize you have a ship's wheel in your pants?!?!"

The pirate replies: "Argh Matey!! It's drivin' me nuts!!"

Someone just told me that "de-essing" the snare drum might help decrease the hi-hat bleed. Has anyone ever tried this?

I got a UPS card in the mail this morning saying that I needed to ring customs to clear my recording gear package (with the m-audio 18/14, M-powered Protools, sm57 beta microphone, and some headphones I ordered). I have to pay Goods and Services Tax on it because it is worth over $1000 dollars. I guess that's life...
Gosh I'm broke. I better do some more recordings..

Michelle, sorry I got here late. But the De-essing would be the first thing I would try indeed since getting the crack of the snare is what triggered the open hats to sound a bit much. It will help level out the hissing caused by the open hats. Although honestly it didnt sound real bad except in a couple small places. One thing to try if you think you might get in that situation again is to put another 57 or whatever under the snare pointed away from the hat. It will allow a little more room for getting a good snare sound without having to rely on the upper mic that might pick up to much hat.

Also Auralex makes some nice little baffles that fit over a mic to keep out the sound coming from behind the mic. I have actually made some using high density foam and they work great.

On the music side, I liked both tracks as well. Cant comment to much on the mix as my poor fat head is still plugged with the sniffles. Time to double up on my vitamin C I guess.

Noize2u, Hope you feel better soon... my mum would say "lots of sleep and hot lemon/soup drinks" ;-)

I have a big university assessment tomorrow, but I'm gonna try the de-essing on Saturday, before the band come and pick up the cd at 6pm on Sat.

Thanx Michelle, I think its just a cold trying to sneak in before winter hits. But a little Nyquil and all is good for awhile.

And indeed hot lemon and honey is what I grew up on when the throat was ailing. Not sure it would unplug my head/ears though.

Good luck with the assesment and the de-essing.

Let me know how it works out.

Finally, the adjustments! :-)

Decreased reverb, increased toms, gats, less delaysin screams, "telephone" effect on intro line... as per band's request. Couldnt quite get the de-essing right, but it seems to be less noticable now with less reverb.

www.michelleklaessens.com...AChampion_B.mp3

Used Harbal 2.0 for the first time, 8% "air " and cranked... but I did not use the "intuit Q" coz that just seemed to make it duller.

Oh ya, Story of a Champion is much better now, as are my ear's. The vox seem to cut through better now with the subdude verb on the snare. I like the new intro with the tele effect better, leads in well.

Hearts Ablaze, I love the breakdown and back into the fray very smooth transition. Nice harmonie's as well there. Drum's sound bigger without getting in the way. The B mix just sounds so much fuller without being LOUD sounding. I'm torn as to which of these 2 I like best. I think Hearts Ablaze is the winner here.

Again, Tuna is hangin for these as well. He gives them 4 thumb's up as he put it. Another to keep us posted on a CD release. Man, that kid is gonna cost me in shipping. :-)

Anyway, they sound as close to perfect as they are gonna get.
