Hi all,
I haven't been around at all lately, but some of you might remember the song I posted this summer from a band that I'm recording. Well, the song has had some more added to it and has been remixed, and we recorded two more songs to finish off the 3-song EP. I'm really happy with it. It may be the first full-band finished project to come out of my studio, despite how long I've been recording! At least it's the first one that I'm really happy with :)

I've got all 3 songs on my NoWhereRadio site if you'd like to take a listen:

Listening to "Waiting"...

The band sounds great, I like the arrangement and the performance a lot. Interesting guitar tone, like that "American Woman" fuzz. It works since the guitar does a lot of single-note stuff instead of all power chords.

The mix is spot on. I wouldn't mind hearing a bit more wetness on the rim-shot snare at the beginning. It sounds fine later in the song, just a bit dry at the beginning. Everything is clear and in place, so I really can't pick out anything other than to say great job.

Judging by the format of the song, it feels a little long. It's a pop song that wants to end about a minute earlier. But on a 3-song EP, I guess its good to get as much as you can out of each song.

Tadpui - I agree with you about the snare at the beginning of Waiting, but after doing about 5 mixes of the song I ended up having to let a few things go since the band was getting a little impatient waiting for me to finish :)

AndyBell - Yup, the recording, mixing, and mastering was all me. The lead singer of the band (And the real driving force behind it) performed all of the instruments other than the drums, since he just finished putting the full band together. He's an awesome piano player and songwriter and his ideas always blow me away. As for the guitar tones, it was all recorded through a Mesa Nomad half-stack. I don't really like a lot of the tones it has, although it's probably still the best amp I've had the pleasure of recording. We managed to get some pretty nice sounds from it after playing with it a few days. I used 3-mics on all of the guitar tracks. 2 SM57's on the grill of one speaker (one in the center and one near the edge), and a Sennheiser e609 on one of the other speakers, balanced somewhere between the edge and center of the speaker. All the mics were pretty much leveled out to the same volume. The amp was actually recorded on one of the less-distorted channels on vintage mode, turned up nice and loud. They're all double-tracked.

Thanks for the comments.

Prop, that stuff sounds great. Did you use Autotune on a bit of the vocal parts on Dont Run Away? Whatever you did there sounds really good as far as the effect you got. I like the mix on all the tunes as well. The guitar tones are bit much at times, but they do seem to fit well in the mix. Sounds very good and I cant really find anything to beef about either on any of the 3 tracks.

Porpoise, I love it. Piano and acoustic guitars always make my heart melt. You done a nice job of balancing the mix.
Just because i end up mixing alot of Rock, I'd probably turn the kick and snare up a little at times when all the other instruments chime in. But that probably would not be right in this genre, rambling again :-)

Noize - Yeah, we used the "Cher effect" there on that bit :) It was also going through a "telephone" eq preset. We used quite a bit of autotune on these tracks to correct pitch problems on specific lines, but that was the only time that we used it for a special effect.

Very kool prop. It sits nicely like I said, and definately not overdone like the Cher effect was. But hey whatever, those guys found a new way to use the Autotune and it worked for them. And it sounds great where you used it for sure.
