I'm looking to get that B3 Hammond swell, of the type that comes in so dramatically on the break in a blues song...
I have a Roland D10 which has a "similar" sound on there on one of the preset patches, which along with the "Leslie" type VST plug-in gets a sound not completely unlike a B3, but not there completely (any free/cheap B3 VSTi's?).
The actual sound is somewhat secondary here. It's the swell intro that's eluding me. How do you do that? Is it a question of fade-in, or is it a modulation thing? I'm lost. I'm a hopeless keyboard player, so any help would be greatly appreciated. This is for a song I wrote for my wife (awwwww!), so I really want it to sound right.

Oct 12, 2005 02:14 pm Well... the swell pedal on a real Hammond is really just a volume control foot pedal. If you are trying to emulate this and don't have the means of the real thing, why don't you just play and record as if you were using one then fade in and out the parts you want later. I think that would work just fine. Goodluck!

Oct 12, 2005 02:42 pm Thanks Al. Thanks for the advice. I know it's not just a volume thing, and it's getting the rotary speaker, the volume, etc. all together at once. All quite daunting, that's why I was looking for a cheap/easy way out. However, the song MUST have this sound.

Oct 12, 2005 02:43 pm Unless, of course, I can get that Al Green sound....
Oct 12, 2005 03:27 pm It's all about the glissando upwards to the chord itselft..
that's the kindof swell I think your talking about
Here's a sample of my b3 imitation of a song of mine
it has one of those little swells...
is that what you mean...
If that's it ... it's all about the glissando's

Oct 12, 2005 05:06 pm I've got an EMU Proteus X Lite version with my 1820M, so I'm spoiled now... and with the use of a rotary speaker amp sim plug-in (can't remember what it is right now...), I'm irritating the whole family at all hours of the day...
Oct 12, 2005 05:10 pm well imagine the piano keyboard ( or organ keybed)
and just slide over all the white keys FAST
until you get to the note you want... and play the note, or the chord
it's called a glissando ...
I really don't know how to explain it any further

Oct 12, 2005 05:18 pm Sounds like it takes a bit of talent.....
Dammit.....
It's now going to take DAYS to get 30 seconds of keys recorded. All that practice, and do-overs....
Why can't it be easy?
Thanks, Presley. I owe you one.
Oct 12, 2005 05:28 pm well, it can be very easy
in midi
you can just draw a glissando to the chord
dunno if you record midi?
in the keyboard vieuw draw a glissando
and keep adjusting till it sounds right
Oct 12, 2005 05:47 pm To do a glissando:
For example play the lower chord with your right hand then turn your wrist clockwise while dragging the back of your fingers/finger knuckes on the keyboard. Then return you hand back to the original position when you reach your high chord. It's really not that hard. I'm not even a piano per se' and I've got it mastered.
*If you're using a real piano or weighted keys, use more of your knuckes on the way up or it'll hurt ;)
Oct 13, 2005 02:20 am also , somtimes
I play the glissando with my left hand
with the palm of my hand
going left to right on the keybed
and with the right Hand I get the chord
*I do this in Very Uptempo songs hahaha
otherwise I don't make it to the chord in time:D
haha I'm a cheater

Oct 13, 2005 11:33 am Cheating's good...
I need to cheat, 'cos I suck at keys.
If only I were friends with Jon Lord....
Really, Al, and Pres, you've done good.
This will make all the difference.
As I mentioned, the song is for 'er indoors. She just loves the song (sentimental old bugger that I am), and she's mad on songs that have that lift in the chorus. This will give the lift it needs.
Oct 13, 2005 01:23 pm glad to help dude,
if you need anything else..
just say so
Oct 13, 2005 02:11 pm ditto :)

Dec 15, 2005 01:48 pm Resurrection of this thread....
Simply to say thank you to Al, and Presley.
Managed to get it worked out (cheating, using the palm of my left hand up to a hovering right hand over the chord....). Sounds about what I wanted.
Dec 15, 2005 02:30 pm Np dude, glad you got it !:)
so... where's the song?:D

Dec 15, 2005 03:02 pm Where's the song..?
A) See separate post about recording a guitar part in stereo. Bad move. Need to rerecord before I begin mixing.
B) The vocals actually came out OK, for third take....
C) It's for my wife!
D) I'm a terrible hack with Keyboards, so it's not too exciting when I do it. Very "background..."
