Trying to figure out this guitar tone...

The first song on this band's website has some killer rhythm guitar in the begining of the song. What effect do you think they are using? Sounds like some sort of filter, but I can't quite figure it out. If anyone has any ideas I would love to hear them! Thanks! -Al

heh "This music has enough delay to make your day." Awesome !

I'm guessing a comb-filter, or ring-mod, or a 'lil of both...

Good stuff !

Hmm... I've never used either of those before but I'll give it a try later. Thanks Hue!

Or a phaser

you can get close to that sound with a wah pedal stuck in a position where it's acting as a notch filter accenting the midrange, and heavy delay.

i would also slap a phaser on there too.

A wah wouldn't cut it, I've already tried that. Phaser woudln't really work either, the tone really doesn't move. That tone of the guitar sounds really clean but filtered weird. Looks like I got some experimenting tonight :)

you tried a wah? it sounds like its stuck in a mid-position. the wah is just to get the tone. it's a pretty common thing to do, but it wont be enough on its own...

Heu and Forty are on it. That is created by and Envelope Filter. It will take some tweaking to get it right. It is basically the same a what a phaser is doing but a bit more articulate. I use an envelope filter frequantly. If you can find one the Elecrtix Filter Factory is an excellant and fairly cheap unit.

How did you stumble accross Victor Rice and Chronic Sonata? I've been listening to his stuff for awhile and I think he's only been mentioned by one other person here.

envelope filter, like electro-harmonix q-tron. more clean than wet; it's really subtle. i use a q-tron, and could get that tone by recording both from the effect out and the direct out, then mixing more of the direct signal.

Noize2u,

I've been listen to Victor Rice for years; from his production work with The Slackers to The Scofflaws to NYSJE to his solo work. Definitly a favorite musician and producer of mine. Chronic Sonata is a band I've stumbled on in the past 6 months. Thier full lengh blew me away. Just a really great dub-esque album. Glad to see someone else here enjoys the dub as well :)

Thanks for your input guys!

Cheers!

Al

I find it relaxing to sit and work to. Some of it can get a bit dance like but most of it flows pretty smoothly.

Yeah, Victor's latest album, In America, is a pretty smooth, chill album. Thier are however a couple ska tunes on there which I enjoy, but sometimes they can be a little much when you want to chill out.

Do you listen to any other dub/reggae musicians? There is a lot of music similar to Vic Rice you might like.
