Not yet. By day I'm an IT Manager. This is all just for fun for me. Like everyone else here, I'd love to get paid for it but I do it for the smile it puts on our faces.

Nope. I'm an Architect by trade. Music production and recording is a very serious hobby of mine. As much as I love music, I'm going to stick it out with my first love; architecture.

Well, this just proves my long held theory of "when musician's realize they may not become rock stars, they become computer geeks". So far my theory holds pretty true.

Last month I interviewed at a web development, hosting, streaming media, ISP company and everybody used to be in bands and stuff...

Nope, tho I am working towards it in many ways between recording/mastering work I do as well as my web design stuff and other bits n bobs. My own music/new band are also on the go - I like to be busy !

Unfortunately, I am also an analyst! Still, we all has our cross to bear!

Cheers

This week I think I got a job that will put my studio to good use on a regular basis creating enhanced CD's of seminars of various topics...they give me the tape or mpeg or whatever source and I create CD audio and video, so if it's in an audio CD player it'll just play the audio of the seminars, if it is inserted into a computer it'll play the video...that'll likely be a cool gig...

Yup, I fit the mold pretty well: I'm an IT Engineer with a travel distribution firm.

I've always loved music, but I never really thought about it being a carreer. It can be a tough living in the music industry. Unfortunately, after 9-11, it can be a tough living in the travel industry also...

Nope, its just a hobby for me, along with playing guitar and singing, golf (real and disc), cigars, gardening, scotch whiskey, and other interests. This just happens to be my most constructive hobby :)

wow, thanks for the many replies! i'm studying music tech along with maths, graphics and physics at sixth form, and im hoping to take maths with business at uni

then i can see my self fitting into the computing mould, along with a bit of studio work on the side...

i'm always hoping that recording could become a full time gig though!

Not to burst anyones bubble here but I also thought recording/engineering was the path for me so I went to recording school, spent a fortune and right now I am a teaching assistant in northern Alberta Canada. I've done a few projects over the years but nothing to call a career. Always have a back up plan!

Yeah, just cuz you want a career in it, doesn't mean it wants your in the career...just like anything, it doesn't always work as planned...but good luck to those who wanna.

The bummer is, that when you take a passion/hobby as a career it can suck the fun out of it before long and it then ends up being "work".

"Yeah, just cuz you want a career in it, doesn't mean it wants your in the career...just like anything, it doesn't always work as planned"

...and sometimes you only THINK you want it as a career. As long as you are to be the creative one then things will be great but try taking instructions from someone that doesn't know/have talent as much as you. It can be difficult to simply carry out the demands made by others when someone else is paying the bill.

Well, quite frankly, I have no career. Kinda forced retirement per my insistance on living in Michigan, (the rotting automotive state) and getting old (natural hazard of living). It's all good however. I have never had so much fun making a living. Do landscaping by day and recording by evening and weekends. I have a number of paying clients utilizing my studio services and I am paying the bills and still getting a piece of gear here and there. I would truely love to stay on this path if I could. Time will tell. I don't miss the 'mob' mentality of the corporate environment one bit.

At this point I don't think I would want recording to be the only thing I did. The balance between activities enhance my abilities at each activity if that makes any sense.

Small world WYD! I live a mile from Willow Run as the plane flies. My wife works for Willow Run schools. It's getting simply ugly here.

I used to live in a house of a GM employee that transplanted to Nashville to work at Saturn. We were living in Redford. I've headed up north since then.

Hey Walt, there's still some cheap land here and there up here, if you're looking to get outta the city.

to answer the question accurately: Part time at the moment. I am running a Label/Publishing company/writing team/studio for one deal while starting school for an EE degree, and working Tech support for a major company by day. :) My goal is to get the tech support company to pay for my EE degree as they have full tuition reimbursement, and then land a job building audio equipment, doing tech support for an audio company, working in a studio, working in an IT dept doing hardware... or something to that degree when I am finished. No matter which way you look at it I will be in my field I guess.. lol The dream of course would be to do the studio full time... *shrugs*

As for small worlds and all these folks from Michigan, I am from Ann Arbor btw.... :)

Yo PJK!

The world is getting smaller yet! I just sold a 40 to my niece in Atlanta! Your just a hop skip and jump away from where I grew up.

On one hand I would love to leave the city, but there is still a quite a bit of draw. My wife's work is important to us, as is my work with my band and others I have networked with since I moved 'down below'. It's hard to find a working 17 piece big band in that neck of the woods and the drive for rehersals would be wacko!

First part of July we will hopping the bikes and heading up your way. I will make it a point to bug you on the way through!
