hey,
i'm thinking of purchasing a dell pc to use for home based recording. I know dell like to use their own version of windows and in some cases their own hardware modifications. Does anyone have any experience using dell pc's for recording and have they experienced any issues /conflicts.
thanks in advance for any help / feedback.

Jan 10, 2005 02:14 pm As far as name-brand PC's go, I rank Dell up amung the best. I have done a lot of audio and video production on Dell's and they work pretty well. They have the same version of Windows as everyone else, the only differences is that some name-nrand manufaturers have versions that will ONLY install on Dell systems.
Jan 10, 2005 02:29 pm yeah i'm using ummm i think it's a 2800 Demention, maybe 2600 i donno, but i've had no problems with it at all, but i've also been very careful with it, i've got it optimized for audio, and it's never been connected to the internet, and prolly never will (until i replace it with something else that is).
peace

Jan 11, 2005 01:25 pm I'm using a Dell Dimension 3000, 3Ghz Hyperthreading, 1GB RAM, XP Home. No problems at all. Not too quiet, but I think I just need to isolate the case fan a bit. It seems loose.
There are custom shops out there for building your own PC, which I was within inches of doing, but Dell gave me the most bang-for-the-buck on features and power.

Jan 24, 2005 02:41 pm I use 4 year old Dell Demension 8100 with 1.3GHZ and it serves me just fine. I'm onyl now starting to have some problems with windows (The mouse glitches and goes crazy all over the screen). Other than that, i've NEVER had a virus. I dont even have a firewall. I also swear by my Dell. It's a wonderful machine

Jan 24, 2005 03:12 pm There's a bunch of stuff running on factory dell machines. You'll probably want to stop and/or un-install some of the running programs.
Also I wouldn't get one of the small footprint ones, as they may not accept regular PCI cards (we have gateway e-series here at work, and the case is too small to fit a normal card into).
I would assume you'd be installing a decent audio card into the dell and not running their onboard sound.
Other than that, I've seen dells run for years and years in the foulest of conditions (in plants, outside, etc).

Ummm.... It is not the computer themselves, it is the OS, it is ok I was in Virus Denial for the longest time too, Dont take it personal man, is all in what one prefers, I prefer Macs, and will adimantly stand by them. Kudos to you if you made Micro$oft work for you.
Jan 25, 2005 01:56 pm It's not only the OS, it's the user...many problems on Windows systems are caused by I.D. 10 T. errors...user malfunction, pebkac error, or whatever you want to call it, don't blame it all on the OS.
