Band Aid!!!

I just watched an hour long documentary with Midge Dure, Bob Geldof and all the other folks from the Band Aid single "Do They Know Its Xmas", Bono et all.

Man, to think Geldof and Midge wrote the song in no time, recorded, mixed AND mastered it...in TWENTY FOUR HOURS! Pressed the next day and sold a MILLION copies the next week.

Now that is an achievement. Earned £3m in the UK alone for Africa, and the engineerin to be done in just 24 hours (free studio time was 24hrs!) - that is awesome with around 30 performers. Phil Collins knocked the drums down in just 2 takes (one was good and two was excellent!).

Now, if I could do that work rate I'd have 10 albums recoreded by now...skill, enthusasim - its all there. Awesome and awe inspiring.

And, NOT A PENNY for the artists - all good cause. Awesome again...

I wish I'd have seen that. Some people's motivation is, as you say, awe insiring. To have an idea and run with it like that, to create what they did is amazing, and with such conviction. I still remember seeing Bob Geldof banging his fist on the table, an image that I think will always stay with me.

He is an amazing guy isn't he?

You can't help but be inspired by him and the others for their abilities, their generosity and their selfless pursuit ie going up against Thatcher...they didn't call her the 'Iron Lady' becos she lived in a tin shack...heh

Are there still people like that today?

Cheers,

Aye - people like that oday - pleanty!!! Gez, almost everything I buy these days is taxed HEAVILY in the UK.

Geldof is the man tho...I wasnt mad on the Boomtown Rats - his old band - but "I Dont Like Mondays" was a cool tune.

Band Aid kinda done him a loada favours. Now there is gonna be a Band Aid 2 with Midge Ure at the desks again..dunno how that will sound. WE'll see. Bet it doesnt make £8m!!!!

Midge Ure is one of a kind. I loved his easy going bass lines in the day. When everybody ws trying to be a star, he just laid back and laid it down. And excelant voice as well.

Bob , now he is another story, and the Boomtown rats were pretty hip aroudn here. Lotsa radio play.

But indeed, Band Aid was an awsome acomplishment.

Maybe we'll get there some day.

Whole-heartedly agree Noize...I really enjoyed your song 'Whole Lotta Love'.

I thought it was intelligent...if that makes any sense.

BM, thanx for that. It was one of the very first pieces that I dove whole heartedly into the synth world. I loved those big modular things with all their cords and dials going everywhere, and each time you moved one the sounds got more obscure. I am an experimenter and love trying new sounds where they dont belong. That was the reason for doing the Led Zepplin tune. I wanted to see if it could be duplicated with nothing but synthisizers. I think it was also the first rock piece I was truly happy with my final arrangement of. If that makes any sense.

I may post some christmass music I did several years ago that uses nothing but electronic instruments, synths to be exact. And I think the arrangements I finished with for those are some of my favorites.

But aye, glad ya liked the whole lotta love cover, I was still pretty young then, and had a lot to learn about arranging and such. So it was a bit rough around the edges, but then the synths in those days were also pretty rough around the edges as well.

Yeah...thats what I think I really liked...the juxtaposition (...what?...who let that out?...).

But Noize...don't pay too much attention to me...I'm full of...opinions.

I like to think I know what I like though.

Cheers and looking forward to the xmas collection,

BM :-)

Well thanx again BM. And indeed, I will pay attention, your opinions are valued as much as any one elses.

And I'll keep ya posted on the Xmas stuff. They are traditional xmas songs re-arranged for the synths. It was indeed fun doing them.

Well here is to hoping you had fun in the studio while he was away. I even managed to get a tiny bit cuaght up last night as well. Which has left me dog tired and not much ambition to finish what I wanted today. Oh well, there is always tonight or tommorrow night.

Aye, twas good eh! I liked it when Geldof stood up to the swine Thatcher...and fair dues. He got the VAT back :-)

What amazed me was the product produced in 24hrs! Amazing, it takes me that to put down a scratch track....geez. Quality...

But aye, it wis a good prog for sure. I'd like to see more of that kinda thing instead of re-runs of junk soap operas.
