Hello,
I have a Systemax Venture, 2.4 Celeron, 640 meg ram, 40 gig hd drive, integrated sound card, C-Media 3d sound drivers, audacity recording sofware.
If it's worth doing, given my system, I am going to upgrade to a Delta 44 sound card and probably buy some good software for recording. But, I'd like to know if my current system is worth a sound card that good, or is that like putting a diamond in a turd?
I am not looking to record entire albums ot store a lot of recorded stuff on my hard drive. I just want to be able to record my guitar here and there in good quality, and maybe post them for evaluation. What I would like to know is:
Is my system too feeble to do this kind of work with good quality?
Will the sound card upgrade eliminate the terrible hiss I am getting now when I record anything?
Also any tips for beginners would be appreciated.
And please remember, you're talking to a complete audio and computer idiot, so keep it basic please.
Thanks for any help!

Sep 22, 2004 03:51 pm First off, I have a similar system but with a bigger hard drive (tho a slower proc - its a 2.2 Celeron).
The hiss will most probs be the internal sound card.
I also bought a Delta44 and my recording probs disappeared.
In short, yes, your system should do what you need which was exactly what I wanted when I started little over a year ago.
I upgraded to the Delta44 and never looked back. Try demos of sequencers like Sonar, Cubase etc - see which one you like then go for it.
Finally, check the Recording Tips on this site - you WONT go wrong.
Good luck
Coco.

I don't feel so bad now.
Is there a page here or a site that has a glossary for "knownothings" like me? Where I can find out what all these audio and computer terms mean?
Thanks

Sep 22, 2004 04:11 pm Coco basically said it all...I will second the motion on getting a better sound card. One geared towards actual audio production will save you fits and do you wonders. Keep poking around on this site. You'll come to the conclusion that the Delta or which ever you choose is your best bet.
Keep an eye on your hard drive space tho. 40G is ok, but if you don't clean out old audio files and whatnot you find that it will fill up quickly. That's why you see some folks on here go for 100+ or 200 GB harddrives...it gives plenty of space in case you like to revert back to something you messed around with 9 months or a year ago....Good Luck

Thanks for the help. And so timely too!
I have room for another hard drive and was considering adding a second stricktly for the audio stuff. Maybe later.
Thanks for pointing out the glossary, I missed it in my hurry to get answers

Oct 12, 2004 12:56 pm You can also buy an exteranal 80Gb hard drive that uses a USB connection for about $100.00. My drummer lives 3 hours away and we are both purchasing the external hard drives and if we visit each other we just unplug the hard drive and take all of our songs with us to the others house. Of course you both need to be running the same program to edit your work.
If you set it up this way you can run your OS and software on you internal hard drive and use your external as storage only.

Oct 12, 2004 10:42 pm INdeed, the external hard drives are getting cheap. And a removable bay works great as well. I use 3 of them on my machine and love it. I just swap out drives as needed.
