Alice Cooper on musician's endorsing politicians

"If you're listening to a rock star in order to get your information on who to vote for, you're a bigger moron than they are. Why are we rock stars? Because we're morons. We sleep all day, we play music at night and very rarely do we sit around reading the Washington Journal."

"Besides," he continued, "when I read the list of people who are supporting Kerry, if I wasn't already a Bush supporter, I would have immediately switched. Linda Ronstadt? Don Henley? Geez, that's a good reason right there to vote for Bush."

I still remember his appearance on "The Muppet Show" when I was a kid...there is NO WAY in this wussy politically correct America that they would get away with doing that show today...it was awesome tho...

He was singing "Schools Out" with a bunch of muppets with school blowing up in the background with muppets flying from the explosions, kept talking to "his boss" which, given the effects going on was obviously referring to satan...oh, I still smile thinking about watching that as a kid, and being glad my parents didn't walk in to the room during it :-)

Every activist group in the country would be protesting today...

i disagree with alice in this case. just because you're a rock star and you live an alternative lifestyle doesn't mean that you are totally out of your mind when it comes to politics and philosophy. history has shown that people who change societies for the better very frequently are people whose lifestyles are looked down upon by the status quo.

What annoys me isn't a "rock star with an opinion" it's stupid celebrities (Susan Sarandon comes to mind) when they get up and think, and quite often say, that they are the voice of America...when often, celebrities of that status are so out of touch with common America they have no business saying they are the voice of the people, just because they have the visiblity.

I would not say that all celebs are out of touch with politics, what I will say is that in todays world it seems every celeb feels they are a political expert and take stands on issues just because of their name power.

I just hate to think somebody has their vote swayed because their favorite pop star sways it...

See....that to me is why John Lennon was a top guy in my opinion.

All he done was use his fame to try and get the peace movement goin..now - who can say anything against that!!

And also, he was frickin cool tae with it (except those matchin tank tops him and Yoko had) - but, musically he wis a genuis. And whilst I hate politics, I can see what he wis up tae - he wis all for peace and thats no bad.

Lennon wis a legend. There is a cool site which shows yi the files the FBI had on Lennon...I will look oot the link and let y'all see.

Agree wi DB tho - popstars should shut their mooths unless they have someting to say. Just casue their famous means nowt to me....

I heard a celebrity whine once about being criticized for coming out political. This guy(who I recall to be alec baldwin)said, "I'm an american too, I have a right to speak out for or against whatever I want." When I heard this I thought, 'true...but I don't have TV networks sticking microphones in my face, giving me the chance to sway public opinion.' Although it's constitutional for celebs to speak out, it doesn't seem proper when we don't have the platform they have. I know whats legal isn't always whats moral...but I guess all's fair in love & war.

i usually dont give a hoot about celebs speaking out. i do, though, remember being happy when clark was in the race because he managed to snare the support of madonna and michael moore--i thought it would help boost awareness of clark. that type of celebrity outspokenness seemed to be really generating some buzz for clark so i was all for the exposure. he needed it. i'm not sure what use celebrity outspokenness serves now, but i think that if i were a celeb who was interested in politics (and knew what i was talking about--ben afflek seems particularly well-informed) then, as an american with a platform, i might just want to express my views, if only because i'd possibly be passionate about them. lots of peeps like to debate politics, celebs too. in a weird way when they talk about politics it helps strip away some of the celeb veneer for me and helps me to see them as real people who care about real things. and i'm always thankful when the veneer of celebrity slips away. i hate america's culture of celebrity. i like to see them come out of thier movie star world and think about real things. on the other hand, i'm sure there are negatives too. celebs don't seem to realize that not everyone cares what they think and that it sort of reduces them when they automatically assume that their opinion matters in the larger scheme just because they are famous. i dunno. i havent thought about it in great detail.

coco, fortymile refers to a town in alaska. i got it from a jack london story. i have an interest in both alaska and jack london. i don't really have an interest in screen names, though. i always get bored of whichever one i happen to have. they define me so narrowly!

how doesn't it seem proper? regardless of whether a celebrity happen to have this influence for whatever reason (acting, music, art, poetry, POLITICS), they are one person and their voice matters to people because they admire that person for whatever they are famous for. of course it means a lot more when you're talking steven hawking vs paris hilton, but that doesn't make it immoral for paris to say criticize ahhnold's budget cuts which cause humane societies to have to put animals to sleep earlier because she loves puppies. there's nothing moral or immoral about it. people feel the way they do, and we listen for the reasons we do.

Quote:
...but I don't have TV networks sticking microphones in my face...

if you're going to get into who has press time and who doesn't, the same goes for all politicians. we all know that all of the stuff in the mass media is controlled consciously or subconsciously by people who definitely do not represent the diversity of opinions within the american public (or that of any nation), and that includes politicians. it's not bad to be "anti". it's not jaded, it's not pessimistic. people have different interpretations of what is going on, and they have the right and the responsibility to use whatever platform they have to express the diversity of opinion so that people can hear other interpretations than that of the status quo, yes as long as it's within the boundaries of the law (but don't forget gandhi, ml king and civil disobedience!).

keep in mind that most of these people who are "anti" are just speaking out against bush and his policies, which bother MANY of us. it's refreshing to hear someone have an honest bit of criticism for those rather than to simply hear about how great the USA is no matter what we do or no matter how many people we kill for whatever reasons we want. we don't need commercials and diatribe keeping us perpetually fixated on 9/11. we need real, honest national debate.

db, I remember that Muppet Show. The duet of "You and Me" with Miss Piggy! Fantastic!

Alice is wonderful. I saw him two years ago at a small venue. Best show I have ever seen! Hour and a half of "Show" (Scripted, costumed, choreographed, props. etc.), then half an hour in street clothes bashing out hit after hit at unbelievable volume. I've seen a LOT of shows/gigs. This was by far the best.

As for "celebrities" with political agendas, I think they should stay away from using their celebrity to endorse their beliefs, and use the voting booth instead. Isn't that democracy at work? Coco's right about Lenon's way (and the matching tops!). Very different. He just said, "We're only trying to get us some peace."

Hey Tallchap...

I take your point...I take your point...I take your point LOL :-D !!

Hehehehe..hey man, you must have pressed submit 3 times !

Still...BTW, I wished Id seen Mr Cooper...never ever saw him. Seen almost ALL The best bands on the planet over the last 10 years except U2 who I really wanted to see and the stones. And, Alice Cooper.

Aye, Lennon wis cool. Endof. Naybody can take that away fi the man - he was just doing what he wanted and didny care aboot nowt else. The Beatles, anything - so, yi canny fault him for followin his ain dreams eh....cool as.

Goin back to celebs, I mind Tony Blair had all the "in crowd" roond. It was heartbreakin seeing Noel Gallagher in No10 sippin wine wi the PM - then the PM sold everyone oot. What I thought WIS cool wis when Chumbawamba (1 hit wonders) come oot with that Tubthumpin song and changed the words at the Brits from "I get knocked down, I get up again, yer never gonna keep me down" to...

"New Labour sold out the dockers, and they'll you you out too" ... AYE - TOO BLOODY TRUE!!!!!

Tony Bliar...actually, if anyone knows of somewhere where I can get some samples I can download of Bliar speakin, Id be oblidged. I need it for a song am working on.

Cheers

they have the right...sure, the responsibility...I doubt it. I get sick of these hollywood "know-it-alls" thinking they have some moral obligation to speak their minds, as if us [/i]"poor, small minded americans,"[/i] can't think for ourselves. They can talk all they want just don't expect me to listen. Many americans feel the same way. Why do you think Rosie O'donnel is so disliked !

Aye...politicians seem to have an inept ability at telling bloody lies!! Never has any other species mastered a skill to such a degree they get paid thoosands a year to talk b/s!

I see yer point tho - I'll give him that - he is smooth (he went to school in Edinburgh up here in Bonnie SCotland tho I am ashamed to admit it).

I quite like Georige boy...again, no his policies as you say Forty, he's just funny when he speaks - man he can cock up a speech good style!! he.

Well Bush has never really been knows for his outstanding speaking qualities. In a way that is kind of what I like about him, he comes off to me as somewhat less of a politician not having perfect hair, perfect white teeth and perfect speech...I like Blair tho too, even Bush needs a towel boy :-D

Before you jump on me, yes, I am aware he is very much a politician, and he has said and done some things I don't really agree with, but I would be hard pressed to name a politician that hasn't. While I am not up for debate on the subject, because I hate it when we get all political on this forum, I personally like a lot of things that Bush stands far (and obviously not some) and the Voting record of Kerry bothers me, I do not like many of the things he has pushed, promoted and/or voted for...very much against some of my fundamental beliefs.

I hope people are not voting this year only based on stances on the war...because there is more than that.

seems like it's a choice between two people i'd rather not vote for at all. kerry's record does suck. i can't say that either of these dudes is even worth it, but thats just me.

as far as charisma, i like bush, better than kerry for sure.

i find it unexpected how many people from across the pond hate blair. most people i know in the states think he made his case for war wonderfully, and he seemed to really believe what he was saying. i dont think we perceive him, by and large, as a liar.

he's just that lovable brit.

Aye...excepet he based all his reasons for going to war on a dossier...which was out of date by a few years and written by a student, based on ifs, buts and mibbes!

However, I dinny hate him cause of the war - I think that had to be done. I dont like being lied to into doing it tho but I agree it should have been done so am no too fussed aboot that decision (in so far as, it was right I think - of course, folk died etc and thats obviously no too gid) but it did need done I think...long term I mean.

Naw, he has lied in Britain for years Forty. All the crap and nonsense aboot what labour would do for the working man - so far, he has rasied my taxes, raised petrol prices, given money to bloody wasted causes ** rehabilitation for those monkeys who deceide stealing/robbing is easier than working ** PARASITES!!! and reduced the money folk with kids get to pay for bloody useless junk like parliament buildings, etc etc etc.

Ach - hes just a slimey wee liar for us buddy (certainly in Scotland for sure). I know he has endeered himself well over there with the folks in the US, but he's good at that. He done it with the brits, then got elected and done SODD ALL!!

But, enuff of this for me budd. I hates politics...so, am gonny go cheer maself up and have me a big 14" pizza ALL FOR ME!! Woooohooo!

Take care.

Sorry buddy, Thats what I meant to say too. I canny be doing with it. Its a catch 22, damned if I do, damned if I dont...so - sodd it.

In the end, they all shaft ya with lies, dodgy policies and damned stories more twisted than Pinnochio's tangled web of lies...

tony blair's "45 minute" case for war against iraq was based upon a plagiarized student's thesis. most people in the states think he made a good case for war because they took the things he said at face value.

i knew a guy who was worth electing. . . once upon a time, a few months ago. :*(

i've never heard about the thesis, that's kinda retarded. but the way blair spoke about the war, you could tell he had given it a great deal of personal thought. his enthusiasm, his appeal, all of it: top notch. he seemed utterly convinced he was doing the right thing. he may still be a liar, but we in the states wouldn't necessarily know about that.

as for the war, my opinion is kind of complex, which keeps me nicely out of arguments about it, which i am thankful for.

enjoy your pizza, coco! nothing like pizza! if i were you i'd put the dukes on with that.

i just saw napoleon dynamite again. that girl in there is just so cute.

Give me a normal girl in a flannel shirt with straight hair and little makeup on...yeah baby, I love it...althought, I saw some pics of that pitcher all dolled up and she all of a sudden looks very plastic...typically, it seems to me (Karyn, correct me if I am wrong) girls that get all dolled up generally do it for themselves and each other, has nothing to do with guys at all...

how's this for an anti-endorsement...

even if i were a staunch republican i think i would still love ministry. when theyre good theyre really good (of course when theyre bad they s u c k)

somehow i missed the news: theres a new album out--houses of the mole (mole as in fudge mole, with the accent on the e) and WOW. it's a return to the glory days. it's not perfect, but there are some slamming tracks there that have al sampling GW bush, and i must say i am loving it so far, just in terms of the music. some of it is like 'mind' or 'psalm 69'--there's even nice clips of GW saying 'psalm 23" right before a monster riff kicks in, all over top of some kind of conan-style opera chorale! totally political, every song begins with the letter W. i'm not so polarized inthis election, but i have to say: go AL JOURGENSON! ministry is back.
