Why do you create music?

I'm just asking to try to get some good conversation going. And by the way, hello to all the new members at HRC. Seems like there have been many lately!

Music is my peace from within. I do it for the enjoyment I can give to others. Because I want to have a song for any1 for any situation or any occasion. Music is universal, thats what makes it so beautiful. Its the 1 thing I know I can also count on and it makes me feel good. I could care less if I ever got a dime for my music, I do it for the love of music.

A picture is worth a thousand words. A poem or lyrics can take you places that the common spoken word can not. Music can convey emotion that words can not envoke. A sculpture, a building, a piece of furnature... can all invite the mind to ponder.

I love music because there are so many mediums to convey thought. Rythum by which the entire universe oscilates. Tone, the language of emotion. Lyrics, the content of the message. Movement, the dynamic process by which we become aware. To say nothing of the fact that I have always loved to tap my foot!

Why not create music !
If it's in y'a... it's got'ta come out !...
Seriously though, I do it 'cause it makes me feel happy, and focused... gives meaning to this miserable existance of mine, even if it's just to make my 'lil-'ol brand of it . Met alot of fine people through the making of music, too... including yous guys ! 8) Plus, it's a challenge to write outside of yourself, so even if you're playing other people's stuff it's fun, and rewarding. There's not a whole lot of downside to the creation part of it, that's for sure !

Aye..its just gid! To be sure...

I wrote about 40 songs 10 years ago in my original band and never done em all properly due to us all being young and the singer being crap. I took all the work with writing ALL the music and co-wrote some lyrics. I also wrote my own 40 songs.

All the stuff I co-wrote I binned. Some of it was good stuff but I had a big bust up with the co-writer so I trashed the lot - big bonfire - 2 years of stuff doon the swanney!

Now, I write for ME! By ME! All just for my own enjoyment and for perfection as far as I can!! I think my songs should be done my way. This is why I do my own stuff now. It pissed me off big time others just no caring aboot ma stuff so now I am sooooooo much happier.

Im doin what I always wanted to do - make REAL good music. REAL I mean CD quality stuff! Thats the aim. I like my own tunes and I can do a mean cover when I put my mind to it. I Can play all my own stuff and the final goal is to transfer all this stuff to "proper" CD and have a big massive quadruple album! Then I can start again!!

Having said all that..thats when I started. Now, I am open to collabs and input - from REAL musicians. This is why I love this website. Nowhere else do you get GOOD GENUINE advice with real input and real folks...

"God gave rock N'Roll to you....put it in your soul for everyone..." what a line - says it all.

addiction! i want to produce more songs of the type i like because there aren't enough of them, and i need them. i'm addicted to a particular set of feelings in rock music and i've just always had to teach myself to write stuff that excites me as much as i was excited by those favorite songs. i guess i want to create something that, when it comes on the stereo, a flurry of excited recognition goes through a room. that electricity is what i want to find.

am i there yet? no@! sometimes i think im not even close. but one fun byproduct, and something that has become its own pursuit in itself, is the idea of learning to be harmonically fluent through the study of theory. i could spend the rest of my life on that and always find it interesting. another weird thing, is that the more you learn, it seems, the more you CAN learn. so i'm having the sensation that while it took ten years to move out of the 'really crappy' phase, now maybe i'm in the 'shows some promise' stage, and it seems that the more writing i do, the less mistakes i make in getting to the kinds of things i like. so, hopefully i'll get more prolific. prolificness is a goal of mine. to date i have only ever posted one complete serious original song for review at hrc. that one was done before i had ever tried computer recording. and so another goal of mine is to simply finish one original song, soon.

Hmm. Its not really a choice, I guess. Even when I dont have a guitar in my right hand and a recorder in my left, I'm always coming up with little riffs and beats, and humming wordless vocal parts (I really suck at writing lyrics!). Plus....its FUN! Which is the underlying reason why I do anything. My mother's side of the family are all musicains and I grew up listening to them play. If you didnt play an instrument, you sang along. If you couldnt sing good....well...you sang along anyway! It was a good time, and I guess it kinda stuck with me.

I grew up in the 60's and 70's listening to my 2 older brothers play prog rock, and they are still phenominal musicians. I wanted to be like them, so I started playing guitar... (1977 I think). But then the fever caught on, then I was hooked.

I was in many bands in the 80's and 90's. All of them getting almost "there" before a soap opera broke out...darn singers...LOL!!!burned out on it.

I write mostly Praise songs now, and looking to shop them someday. Much more fulfilling creative experience now. However, I wouldnt trade (some) my fun and experiences with bands that I was in for almost anything.

Of course, like all artists, there is also a little vanity involved in creating something original. We are human, and cant really deny that!

I dunno, why not make music? I have no family history for music, or art much at all really...but I draw, mayke music and do graphic design, I like it. Music helps me sort out emotions, release tention and mourn...

...because I can play/make jamacian music pretty damn good for a white boy.

I've always been into music and the arts. Creating music is another outlet for me to express myself other than my everyday work (architecture). I find it extremely relaxing as well as rewarding. There is nothing more rewarding to me that working on a project (whether is is art, architecture, music, whatever), going through the creative process, and seeing an end result. I live for that.

But seriously, I play reggae pretty good for a white boy ;)

There is definately something about the process of creation. I think that drive to create is what got into engineering as well. It exercises all parts of the mind in a way that not many other things can.
