If put the mic inches away rather than "almost touching" the screen of the amp will I lose some low freq?

you won't loose it, it just won't be so "present". It can easily be added on again with EQ.

jues.

"proximity effect".. i was reading about this in the SM57 manual

I'm going to get a chance to mess with this this weekend. I plan to use both an sm57 *and* an mk 319 on a great sounding 12" guitar combo amp and track both mics at once. Then I can listen to each separately and choose whichever fits with the final mix :O) heck, i might even use a combination of both

the trick i think will be scooting the mics back and forth in front of the speaker trying to find that perfect distance. now i'm wishing i had a nice parametric to stick in there
