So my 14-year old son joined a hardcore band 2 weeks ago when they lost their vocalist. They did a show this afternoon at a local indoor skateboard park with 3 other bands. It's a good thing I brought a small PA rig just in case, since there wasn't anything else in sight.
I ran 3 SM58s, into an old Behringer mixer, through a Behringer FBQ3102 stereo GEQ (monitors on one channel and FOH on the other), 2 Mackie SRM350 monitors and 2 Mackie SRM450 mains on sticks. The room was all cinder block, about 30' x 50' with a 12' ceiling.
My biggest concern was feedback, but after adjusting a few hot frequencies with the EQ, there was zero feedback. Also, there was one sure sign that these kids are amateurs. I asked them how the monitors were and they said "perfect." That won't last.
I don't think I ever worried so much when I was getting paid for a show. It's different with your own kid.
In any case, it turned out great. My kid really impressed me and his dad came through when it mattered. Several of the other kids came up to me afterwards and thanked me.

Glad that you were able to come though for them. Sounds like you had a great time with it.
And I love the "That won't last" part! And sadly, it never does.

Sep 27, 2009 09:29 pm Yes, very cool experience.
A couple things I forgot to mention:
1.) My brother-in-law (whose blues, reggae, etc. band I got started with) was standing next to me watching his nephew. He gestured to the kids watching the show and pointed out how much fun they were having. They were going nuts.
2.) Going nuts included a mosh pit, which briefly enveloped my rig and unplugged the mixer's power supply. We pushed the pile back, plugged the cord back in and the show went on. The performers didn't know what happened till later. When I told them, they took it as a good sign that they had caused their fans to knock-out the PA.
Based on this experience, I won't be ditching the Behringer gear anytime soon. I'd have been a bit tense if I'd been using my digital Yamaha rig under those conditions.
Sep 27, 2009 09:53 pm Yup. With wall outlets, Gaffer tape is your best friend.
And I wouldn't bring out the Yamaha board for that type of event either.

Sep 27, 2009 11:00 pm Good to hear Doug indeed. And hell ya its great when you can come through for your kids. Over the years I mixed several shows for the local teen weekend club in and old fire hall. Always a blast and always much respect back from the kids involved. You'll soon be the coolest dad on the block. Its a great feeling for sure.
Glad you Behry survived for another gig though.
