Just to get it straight, your preference is to record real drums or do you want to set up strictly for programming the drums via either a trigger kit or a controller?

If you have a tracking app, like Cubase, Sonar, ProTools or whatever then you need a virtual instrument to run in it and sequence the drums...something like Native Instruments Battery, Cakewalk Velocity, Fruity Loops or something similar (there are lots of 'em) and you can program them in there with just your PC.

Yep, you'll simply need either something along the lines of NI Battery which is probably one of the best out there or you can go with DrumCore which is what I use along with my outboard gear.

But you can get by either writing them by hand or playing them in with a simple pad controller like the one from Alesis or M-Audio or a small 25 key keyboard controller would work as well as long as it has velocity sensitive keys.

You'll need EZdrummer for that (Drumkit from Hell is one of the kits / expansion packs). It's not a standalone program, but you use it as a plugin in a DAW. For example you have Reaper where you can record guitars, vocals etc. and there you can load EZdrummer in a track. And with EZdrummer you can create a drumtrack.

And tutorials how to use it:

You can buy different expansion packs for it, each pack containing a different drumkit and sounds/grooves. For example there's the Drumkit from Hell which is metal, but also you have a Vintage Rock one, Jazz, Industrial etc. the one that standard comes with EZdrummer is the Pop/Rock one.

I started off with EZdrummer when I didn't have a drummer and was looking to do one small project. Pretty solid app. I don't know much about the others, as I have not used them. But it does work well. I don't use it much now, as I upgraded to the next level app from EZdrummer's Toontrack company, but I still do use the sound samples from it. Give it a whirl. Its cheap, and as it says in the title... pretty E.Z. to use.

Personal recommandation: Addictive Drums

Great sounds, and you can tweak a lot of stuff (compression, eq, effects, etc. are all integrated in the plug-in)

For any of the software that everybody mentionned, you have the option of programming it directly on the PC, or playing it on either a keyboard, trigger kit, etc. Basically, anything that has a MIDI output!
