We are on our second straight day of no school. Looks like we'll be going halfway into June again!

They never did close my kids school, my wife drove them, and according to my wife, so did every other parent in the district.

I have a 3 block walk from my bus drop to the front door of my employer...I felt the skin on my face freeze in that time...very painful.

Oh Yo..

I experienced that while living in Craig, CO during the winter of '83-'84. I was broke and had no car, and had to walk the 3/4 mile to and from the radio station where I was a DJ. For two weeks it was -25 to -45 F. I had to get there a half hour before my show to give my face time to thaw so I could talk.

Yes, and it was uphill in both directions, Sonny. :-/

I assume you Eskimos have crankcase heaters in your cars?

I have had crankcase heaters in my older cars, my current one doesn't need it, that little thing will start in anything it seems...it may have one, but I have never used it. The majority of the cold here today and yesterday is wind chill...so when my car is in my garage it's no problem (only -10 or so then) it's the damn wind...not sure about today when I get back from the bus though, I tried to park in the middle of a few cars in the lot so as much wind as possible is broken up before getting to my car.

I feel for you guys. Been through my share of -40 weather. Around here today it is just hovering around freezing. We have been shovelling snow the past couple of days now. About a foot in total. I got the back pain to prove it.

You're my kind of guy Coolo. I hate the cold. Its been down in the low teens here in KC and its driving me crazy. Once the holidays come and go, the wait for spring is agonizing. The cold. The snow. The wind. The shivering. The chattering teeth. The static electricity. I'm sick of it all. The novelty of winter has officially worn off. I'm ready to get back to sunshine, short sleeves, vegetable gardens, frozen cocktails and not having to spend 10 minutes in preparation to go outside for the mail or to take out the trash.

I agree, that the wait for Spring gets agonizing this time of the year. But...tomorrow is February 1st! It's all downhill from here. Last night the weatherman promised that this would be the last sub-zero cold snap of the year. However, February is also historically the snowiest month of the year in Wisconsin. Just think positive. I remember three or four years ago I went golfing here in Wisconsin on March 5th. (Then we had a blizzard the next day and the courses were closed until mid-April!)

You just never know...

Why I remembers when I was a repairman for General Telephone in Northern Michigan. Neg fourty, up a 20' pole, 20 miles from any human thing, trying to put a connector on two wires with numb hands that will no longer move, saying "what the hell I am doing?". I got back to the truck stuffed my hands under my armpits and burnt the **** out of both. Took 20 minutes to get my hands anywhere near the defrosters.

Now that it's cold, I am sure the brake pads in my wife's car will start grinding...happened at least every other year...I try to change them in the fall, whether they need 'em or not, but I don't always get around to it...

Ah, blessed Florida, where the lowest you'll ever see it go is about 22 F. But...that was only one time back when I was in highschool. Only "white" x-mas we ever had, and we had a nice long christmas parade to march in. Sure, the uniforms were warm, but my hands were starting to hurt about half-way through the parade. The one year I wish we had gloves hehe.

Nah, but seriously, you North'ers got it harsh. Lately I've never seen the temp drop past 40 F during waking hours here. I'm kinda wondering how my friend in Vancouver is doing right now.

The summers here suck though. Humid, 100 degree weather, blech.

Yeap, that's why we went to Orlando in January last year. Man, it was great. No lines, and 70 degrees. Awesome.

We just got our dose of the storm Tue night and Wed, though we didn't have it near as bad. It was 3 deg F for most of Wed, but it's in the 20s now.

We rarley drop below +40ºF here. However, I've done the -40ºF before, and I don't like it.

I used to go watch a hockey team in Asiago, Italy (yes, where the cheese comes from). No wall to the rink. A roof, yes. But no walls. -40ºF.
The locals had their shirts off...
I had three coats on.

We did have a great hailstorm here (yeah, yeah, I know your state gets it worse...). Very rare. Big thunderstorm, then ten minutes of pea sized hail. About an inch or so... Odd.

Sun is shining today and I'm at the 'should I put a sweater on?' point.

Try camping in this stuff. The first year with Tuna hit a -57 below with the wind chill. And the mean temp was like -18 or a bit lower. Ray came close his first year with -52 wind chill and -15 mean temp. And it sounds like he might get the same again this year when he goes again next weekend.

Ya just gotta be prepared and dress properly.

And to think I used to stand out in the middle of a frozen lake for hours on end in this kind of weather just to catch some fish for dinner.

Check this link out...

www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/c...4_metric_e.html

The buses didn't run all week but the school was open. None of the kids came to school though. This is the longest cold snap i've ever experienced. This morning it was -46 with no wind chill. It's been that way all week. and it looks by that link i posted above that it's not going to change in the next few days.

That ice fishing is the worst! Standing or sitting on ice waiting for a friggin fish. Now my X-father-in-law had it down pat. He took a pop up camper and ripped the wheels off of it, put on skies. Drill a hole and push the thing over it. Open the trap door, turn on the heat. He even had spring loaded reals rigged in the thing where when you saw the line moving you pressed a release and zip, in flew a fish. Case O beer, some Coleman fuel, and a deck of cards and we waz good to go!

It's been below -20F every night for the past week, and above 60F during the daytime.

here in LA it rained for a week. 50s or 60s during the day, i think, and colder at night. 30s 40s probably. but the weird thing was that when i stepped out side after the sun came back out after this week of constant heavy rain, the brown mountains in the distance--if you've ever been here,, you know they're just huge hills of what looks like dirt and sand--were carpeted in green. i have not seen such a thing in my year and a half here. very weird.

Wow, I feel bad now. Coldest it's gotten here so far this year was maybe +15, and I thought that was cold. Then again, I was born and raised in Maine, and saw the temp go far below -20, let alone the windchill; and when you're out on a lobster boat tending traps, forget about it. I swear I saw a thermometer freeze out on the water one day.

Forty, you have to realise that southern California only has two seasons: Green and Brown.

If you want four seasons, move to Malibu:
Fire, flood, quake, and mud.

forty, I've been there a few times and seen them as well. But ya, usually brown, and then it all suddenly turns wonderfully green.
