worst american fast food: quiznos

good god, these subs suck. i've tried three times, and they're just terrible. absolutely devoid of flavor, masked with extreme sodium.

the company refuses to release nutrition information, as well. their site has facts for two 'lite' sandwiches, and one of them hits the RDA for sodium, all by itself.

i hope this chain goes down in flames. their commercials are irritating (because they're unjustifiably proud of themselves).

seriously, worst food you can buy. if any of you are fans, i recommend seeing a doctor for a tastebud consultation.

I agree, I hate Quizno's as well...at first I hated them just because of their stupid commercials with the rat type creature, then I had one...thought maybe it was an off day, so I tried another...they suck.

Yep...Quizno's sucks. I've only had it once, and swore I would never try it again. I thought that maybe I was just being unreasonable, but this thread has convinced me otherwise.

I'm not a huge sub sandwich fan, but when I'm in the mood I go with Erbert's & Gerbert's or good old Subway (those are our only oher choices around these parts!)

I love Quizno's. I also love Subway though it's a lot more "clean and processed".

I do of course live in a place that lacks small community sub shops etc but I've never thought of Quizno's as devoid of taste, other complaints I could imagine but not that one.

Man, ain't it lunch time yet?

The reason I'm spending so much time in here is - my current task is narrating a gynecology presentation for the medical students. Just can't get me head into it, so to speak.

My wife and I are going out for lunch today. I don't think I'll choose tacos.

"...but I've never thought of Quizno's as devoid of taste, other complaints I could imagine but not that one."

you're not the only one, but i confess to being baffled by that. a friend of mine eats at quiznos religiously. he introduced me to the place. first time i went in, i was impressed by the options, which seemed better than subway. lots of condiments and options. so i was really confused when i had to keep taking another bite and then another, almost waiting for the taste to show up.

u might disagree, but as far as i can tell, the ingredients are blanched of all flavor, either deliberately or because they're just cheap ingredients. then the company overloads them with sodium. which covers that up and activates some part of you to want more. i mean, just salt alone can make you want more. they say that about mcdonald's, i think--some additive or component making you simply need to eat more--maybe it's high fructose corn syrup, or maybe just the fat. and cigarettes have additives that keep you coming back for more--i once smoked some american spirits and then traded them immediately becuse i wasn't getting light-headed like i do with camels.

i think there are tricks out there. i think quiznos' 'taste' is a trick. i can't really identify true flavors like i can with other restaurants. everything just tastes salty and identical. you should be able to bite into the sandwich and taste the meat and identify the cheese, etc. i can't do that at quizno's.

subway's a little better, but their cheese is not very tasty. pretty bland cheese. fresh veggies, though. and there's a smell to that place--the bread. i think subway wins hands down, but would take second place to most non-chain sandwich shops.

Meltdown, Togo's is that local Mom and Pop shop that's owned by Burger King (BK owned Togo's at least until the end of last year). Togo's used to be great to me but something changed. It may well have been my tastes but I ended up not liking them and haven't been in years.

Forty, funny thing is that I would classify Subway with many of your statements. I think the meat and cheese at Subway is over processed and bland, but I like Subway also :)

Since I started trying to lose some weight (down 28lbs today) I pretty much just do Subway one day per week now mainly because I o'd on Quizno's when they first opened one local to me.

Yep, Quiznos sucks hamster backside! Funny enough though they started out OK then turned to crap. My vote for the worst sub of all time though goes to Blimpies! They are the scum of the sub world.

Jimmy Johns rocks the boat here. Otherwise subway if it is the only alternative. My personal preference is a little bowling alley in Skokie IL that makes the most killer Grinder on the face of the planet.

But I'll give a big ups to Schlotsky's as that was truly one of my favorites when the kids were younger. Not one near us though anymore. The black olives did it for me there.

yeah blimpie's sucked. and tonyoci, i think subway has a few bland ingredients. their cheese is just processed junk. what a waste. i do think their veggies (onions, green peppers, banana peppers, etc) are pretty fresh and flavorful enough, though. plus the bread is decent. so to me you basically end up with lousy meat and cheese. pretty important stuff there, but at least it's not a total loss.

Here I thought I was the only one. Everyone at my work swears by them. I'm like "Whats the big draw, is it because they are a fairly new company?" Every time I've had one it has totally sucked wishing I had gone to Subway instead. I also really enjoy Mr. Sub.

I like Quiznos. Maybe it's different here in the great white north. I never order just a basic sub though. I always get something like a Chicken Maranarra or Prime Rib something or rather. Plus they come with whole hot peppers. Anyhow, haven't been to Subway in quite some time. Oh, we have a place around the corner that is quite good called Sub Garden. No processed stuff. Mmmm, yes a sub with cheesebread. OK, maybe I'll get my next one from Sub Garden.

While I understand your dislike of Quizno's (each to their own), can you really rate it below McD, BK, KFC (which has turned to ****) and many other junk items :)

I've never eaten at Quiznos cuz I can't justify spending like $6 on a fricken sandwhich...

I hate subway's bread. Awful!

Togos bread also sucks, but it's not as bad as subways.

The best sandwhiches i get are from the supermarket (safeway normally) but you got to watch 'em close make sure they make 'em like you like 'em.

Personally, I would absolutely put Quiznos below all of those other fast food places. My experience there is admittedly limited but I really disliked the sandwiches I've had from there. I actually like McD's double cheeseburgers and fries, I also like KFC's food in general. I've always had a pretty bad impression of Burger King, but I'd still say that I was way more dissatisfied with Quiznos than BK.

But for worst American fast food, I think that Hardees might take the cake. Talk about being totally void of taste! In particular, the Hardees in Mt. Vernon IA has to be the single worst tasting fast food franchise I've ever been to.

i'm a subway and taco-bell lover, i've only eaten at quiznos once or twice i donno, i remember i got the big sandwich and it was like 8 bucks...so i never went back.

as for no/bland taste, i gotta give that to jersey mikes, while the subs are bigger, the meat and veggies are rather dull to me.

here's a wierd one, if you get a veggie pizza from pappa johns (no pineapple but with japs) the pizza always comes out sweet....it's quite strange.

Does anybody remember a little shop called Clarks submarine sandwiches? They had the most rockin chicken salad and other goodie's. Real meat and dressings and such. And they used Vadelia onions, I think that is what made it great.

For fast food I like White Castle. Fast in and fast out. :-P

If you ever come to Memphis, including the airport, stop at Lenny's Sub Shop. Shits the bomb.

Seriously. Its worth the flight just to goto Lenny's. Also another wonderful local place is Corky's. Best BBQ around. No competition. These guys freakin ship around the country over night packages of their ribs more than they sell them in restaurant its that good.

yikes lots of new points, each of which i must respond to.

noize: white castle rocks. the onions rock. those tiny little minced onions.

tonyoci, quiznos to me sits well beneath mcD, kfc, and BK. although it's an unpopulat stance, i believe that mcD makes a good 'fast food' hamburger, which to me is a separate category from 'real burger.' mcdonald's has mastered the art of blending a few distinct flavors into one perfect, complementary symphony of taste. bite into a mcdonald's burger and notice how every taste works perfectly together. it's a unity of taste. many things contributing to the whole, each melding together into something untouchable! (i also think the minced onions are key to really important to this burger too though). anyway, if interested, read this article about heinz ketchup and why it's tops. it's about the same idea, the melding of flavors. very scientific article (sort of). who knew flavors were this complicated. comparing ketchup creators to perfumists, basically. very, very interesting. mustard is examined, too. enjoyable article, this.

www.gladwell.com/2004/2004_09_06_a_ketchup.html

bk, on the other hand, i think tries to make a real burger, not a fast food burger, and i think it not surprisingly fails. i think, anyway. i think their burgers are fine. but they're not as good as a back yard burger, which is what they're trying to be on some level. and while wendy's is, i think, one of the best fast food restaurants, i think their burgers don't trump mcD's because in a wendy's burger, the tastes are more distinct and unblended, unlike the perfect symphony that is a mcD burger. i say this with hesitation because i like wendy's burgers. but i gotta say that mcdonald's wins in some way, on some level. plus those fries are perfect.

as for KFC, it's great! that restaurant has served great chickeny products since i was a kid. the new bowls are ridiculous, but i don't have to try them (and haven't.) but those twisters are good. the mashed potatoes and gravy have been described as 'ambrosia' by some fast-food critics, and the hot wings, while not like normal sauce-drenched hot wings, are actually really tasty even without sauce. it's the chinese crispy-wing style they've got going on there.

these foods have flavors. quizno's really does seem to me as if it's 99 percent salt. i really detect only the merest ghost of a flavor there. i feel crazy, because i can find few others who seem to realize this but to me it's as obvious as the sun.

coolo, subway's bread of course does not compare to REAL bread. i think it's ok for what it is, though. at least it smells good. lol. (panera's pretty good for bread).

papa johns: the pizza i wish i could love. their little side items are quite a draw. the garlic butter and cheese sauce, and the peppers are so worth it. but for years i've been noticing that after two slices of pj's pizza i just get sick of it. it is the sauce. the sauce at PJ is sugary-sweet, not like a sauce should be. i think this might be another gimmick. trying to snare unsophisticated americans with a trick!

please no one take offense. i'm sort of a frustrated radio host at times. i just like to pontificate.

Nothing in food to me sits under McD's...though sadly I do eat it simply because it's quick and easy generally. Not a lot, but I do eat it. Burger King is only slightly above it. I do think BK's burgers are far superior to McD's...McD's have no texture or substance, just a mash of "stuff". Quizno's is down in that league somewhere.

My take on McD's, watch the episode of SpongeBob SquarePants where the Krusty Krab is bought out by a big business and see what the big biz does to the burgers...that is EXACTLY how I look at McD's. I just see a symphony of mush...I guess I don't see forty's position on that at all.

I am a huge onion fan, I could eat onions like an apple but my wife hates 'em. When I used to gig a lot, at 3AM Subway was the only fast food open, so I would get home, crawl in bed and hear a "argh, you went to subway" just cuz of the onion smell...I ask 'em to PILE onions on.

KFC rocks. My kids like it too...it's the dinner we have when the kids did something good in school or some such thing cuz the kids look at KFC like a "treat".

Papa Johns, nope, never eat there again in my life...never will that place get my money. Papa Murphy's take n bake is where it's at for Pizza...their Delite thin crust is the ****!

One place nobody mentioned, and my personal favorite fast food, bar none, the greatest, and the worst thing about my new job is not having one near. Chipotle! YUM!

Ha! Memphis, we spent two days there in january. My friend from HS works in the airport as a traffic controller, so we got a mega tour of the whole facility on his day off. It was the shiznat. We also ate at Corky's while we were there too. Saw Graceland, sun studios, etc.

Topic related: they opened a subway in my small town, so that's my go-to for quick food now. I quite like them.

Pizza hut, now that makes me ill. Twice in a row I've gotten upset tummy from that. They're off my list.

Never eaten at quizno's, probably won't now =).

Chipotle is great! Especially for a restaraunt that's owned by McD's. I don't like the herbs in their rice but I love their food otherwise. Its a little pricy and their menu is pretty slim, but they do a few things and do them well. I like that philosophy.

Its so funny to read everybody's love/hate relationships with fast food places. They're kind of a necessary evil. Like McD's, who I would never argue have terrific food, but I eat there frequently because its satisfying and cheap. Same for Taco Bell, although I'm a reluctant customer there because I was raised on different fast mexican food (Taco Tico baby!) and only eat Taco Bell because its nearby, cheap, and filling.

Pizza is another one of those polarizing kinds of American foods. Everybody loves or hates each pizza place for their own reasons. There's always been some undescribable quality to Papa John's that I have never liked. Tastes like cheap pizza to me. Like Domino's. Now Mazzio's is a great pizza chain further south (Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas and a few in Missouri). Pizza Hut only gets my business because they have online ordering here in Kansas City and I can get pizza brought directly to me without having to sit on hold or try to get my order through some numb-skull's head over the phone.

Wow, we can really go on about food can't we? I just ate breakfast and now that I've been reading this thread I could already go for lunch. No wonder I'm getting fat!

The slim menu is what I like about Chipotle, like you said, a few things, all done well. I took my oldest bike shopping yesterday and we stopped for dinner at Chipotle, her first visit and she loved it...

And being owned by McD's is funny in an ironic sort of way, cuz McD's has a large menu (by fast food standards anyway) trying to do a little of everything and I can order most anything and it all tastes the same, it all has the McD's tint to the taste...

Hahaha, kind of like Long John Silver's where they use the same fry oil for everything they serve. So it all comes out tasting alike. I had a shrimp platter from Long John's once that had a bunch of short-and-curlies mangled in with the breading. Yum!

My rundown

McD - I eat it once in a while, but can't say I really like it

BK - I prefer it to McD but still don't eat it much

Taco Bell - Love It

Subway - regular eater

Quizno - regular eater

Carls Jr - has some interesting options but low quality store in my area

Jack In The Box - Quite like but store quality varies badly

Of course there's always local places that are great, sandwich places, for me Taco places etc.

Pizza I rarely eat from FF joint, but I like Dominoes but mainly cause there isn't one local and I remember it fondly.

oh man, long john's is amazing. they don't like with those crunch sound effects in their commercials, either. one of the least-healthy fast foods, but amazing i think. those little sides of crumbs, wow. and the hush puppies.

i too pile on the onions, raw. with any sandwich.

if people are wondering how i can possibly say what i said about mcdonalds, i urge you to read the kethup article (linked about). substitute 'mcdonald's' for 'heinz' and that's exactly my point, the point made in that article. that is a seriously interesting article which covers the history of ketchup and mustard. talks about why hunts ketchup is blown out of the water and how heinz became totally dominant by learning to understand how flavors interact. (heinz has each flavor your tongue can detect, and they don't 'sit on top' of each other as they do with inferior ketchups. kind of like a perfume, everything is blended, and there are just little notes of flavor that stick out without being overwhelming). also it talks about flavor in general and how dijon mustard had an uphill battle before people accepted it, and how mustard may be fundamentally unlike ketchup in some way which i now forget.)

chipotle is good if i remember, but i havent been to one in forever because i haven't seen one here. in orlando we have a place called tijuana flats which is pretty great. they have a sauce bar. you can choose from dozens and dozens of hot sauce blends, which is an industry first i believe. they have a huge menu of sauces.

*snip*

"When Heinz moved to ripe tomatoes and increased the percentage of tomato solids, he made ketchup, first and foremost, a potent source of umami. Then he dramatically increased the concentration of vinegar, so that his ketchup had twice the acidity of most other ketchups; now ketchup was sour, another of the fundamental tastes. The post-benzoate ketchups also doubled the concentration of sugar—so now ketchup was also sweet—and all along ketchup had been salty and bitter. These are not trivial issues. Give a baby soup, and then soup with MSG (an amino-acid salt that is pure umami), and the baby will go back for the MSG soup every time, the same way a baby will always prefer water with sugar to water alone. Salt and sugar and umami are primal signals about the food we are eating—about how dense it is in calories, for example, or, in the case of umami, about the presence of proteins and amino acids. What Heinz had done was come up with a condiment that pushed all five of these primal buttons. The taste of Heinz's ketchup began at the tip of the tongue, where our receptors for sweet and salty first appear, moved along the sides, where sour notes seem the strongest, then hit the back of the tongue, for umami and bitter, in one long crescendo. How many things in the supermarket run the sensory spectrum like this?"

Forty, I totally get your point. McD makes a food that I almost don't consider to be a burger. It's just "MacDonalds". I don't go for a burger I go for a Macdonalds. It's a specific thing that I admit once in a while I have the taste for.

Next lets, analyze chain restaurants.

Applebees
Mimi's Kitchen
Olive Garden

I vote for Applebees as the worst American sit-down chain restaraunt. At least, worst menu...maybe not worst food quality. I never can seem to find anything that sounds appealing on their menu. I have to make multiple passes thru the menu, lowering my standards each time.

Favorite American chain restaraunt: Outback Steakhouse. Their ranch dressing is awesome, as is the bloomin' onion appetizer. Best indoor flat-top steaks IMO, and their blended Gold Cost Rita in the giant glass would make anybody be happy to be there by the time they finished it hehehe

I'm neutral about Olive Garden, but I think that's their thing...not too good, not too bad. Its, um, average.

Damnit, now I'm hungry again!

The missus just ate at applebee's, she loved it, saying the steak was fantastic. Though she asks for steak well done (ug) plus some charcoal on the outsides.

I've been there a few times, and like Tad, I can never find something I want, then am appalled by what they're charging me for something I didn't want.

Olive garden is kinda like that too. I never know what to get. Everything has vinegar and olives in it (ug).

Chili's is one of my favorites. No maggy-riter for me, but the steak and chicken fajitas are mucho-good.

I like Outback also but I hate that bloomin' onion, just too great. For me Mimi's Kitchen is the best chain but it's not that wide I think. I quite like Applebees, they have some original combinations :)

Haven't been to Olive Garden in years but I liked it when I went, definitely Italian mass produced but nothing wrong with that

i guess if i had to pick a fav. it'd be red lobster or o'charley's but i'm not too big on the chains, i detest fridays and applebees and ruby tuesdays for no real reason, they're just so fake to me and the food is ok at best...and i'm pretty sure atleast two of 'em are owned by the same company.

my fav place to eat is the bar i cook at on the weekends...we got a hickory fire grill and our food is top notch...we serve fresh filet mignon tips (that we cut ourselves) like they're gooin' outta style....and we've got king crab that we steam (we're talkin one leg is usually more than a pound). our soups are made from scratch that day and we also make our own ranch dressing...hands down best food in my small town..'tis a bit pricey though.

and for desert we have a customer that makes custom cheesecakes and all kinds of baked goodies all in her house, let's see fridays do that!

oh, and we just started tuesday night jams, bring an instrument and jump on stage. *Borat voice* niyce

just another reason why small business is the way to go. f the bottom line.

the only chain restaurants i'm familiar with in the list are friday's and chilis. i'm ok with both of them. but i'm with pjk on those chili's fajitas: i really dig 'em! that's what i get every time there. those little eggrolls are also good. and they have one really great desert, some chocolate cake thing that tastes great heated up in the micro. has fudge and caramel sauce.

my favorite italian chain restaurant is carrabba's. some really good stuff there for a chain restaurant.

Chili's indeed with the awesome blossom onion thing.
Outback, only for the bloomin onion, their steaks just never did it for me. Maybe its just the one near us.
Red Lobster, ya I like it but to me it has gotten a bit not so special anymore.
TGIF's, well I wont go there at all anymore.
Aplebee's has the Buourban Street steak which I and the boyz love, otherwise there is nothing else there I like much.

Here is one that I simply love but its not cheap. Ruby Tuesdays. They have the best salad bar in the northern hemisphere.

Back to fast food. Long Johns, ya I love them hush puppies and crackings. But indeed it does all taste the same.

Here is a middle of the road one, not fast food but not a fancy place either.
Fudruckers and their one pound hamburger. Tuna can plow through one and a basket of fries in like 3 minutes or less.

Does anyone remember Popeyes fried chicken, Or Arthur Treachers fish and chips, Or H.Salt fish and chips?

forty, the onions are what make those little sliders worth the tripp. The boyz and I used to make a weekly Friday night trip downtown just to eat at one of the old school whiteys. Its a pity they changed the onion chips though years ago, they've just not been the same. Although I have grown to like them again.

forty, the last H.Salt here went down in the late 70's. but back then it was indeed better then Treachers. Although I knew and dated girls that worked at both so back then taste meant nothing. But ya, Salt had a killer malt viniger (sp) that rocked the house. They did the newsprint wrapping and the whole nine and ya, the batter was just the right thickness and not so crunchy that it broke teeth but just kind of right. If you do try it let me know. It would be so worth a trip to LA just for the memory of it. And I have to say one thing here about the scary look of it. Some of the best eating I have ever done was in some of the scariest looking places on the planet. The bowling alley I described above was a dirty nasty looking whole in the wall, but as I stated the subs there were absolutely out of this world.

Herb, that is a killer looking Dagwood you got there! I used to come home from playing and build **** like that to soak up all the beer. Then I'd get up n the morning and never have a hangover. I think my favorite was a made with sardine, fried egg, cheese, onion, fresh cucumber, pickle loaf and mayo. My GF of that time would get up and ask what the hell that horrid smell was. I would simply hold out the sammy and she would toss my pillow and a blanky out on the couch and shut the bedroom door.

Oh ya, I knew I missed one.

Chipotle does indeed rock! The size of those things is huge. I like the fact you simply tell them what to put in and they just start shoveling it in.

On the contrary, I have an iron stomach. I'll eat anything except wax beans and canned peas. Peas gotta be fresh in my book or they are just another bit of mush.

Ever tried bologna and peanut butter? Very good for those whiskey nights. You can add a little miracle whip if you so desire. I've even been known to dab a little grape jelly on with it.

My favorite though is to get a jar of cooler pickles, home made are the best. They are a sweet pickle. Then on a good bread get some real butter, not the stuff that thinks its butter but real butter. Slice up one of them Vadailia onions and cover the bread, add some of the sweet pickles and slap on another slice of bread with lotsa butter. Now that is a sandwhiche!

You can even get hotdish on a stick at the MN state fair. dB isn't kidding. They have deep fried everything, and just when you think they have deep fried it all they think of something else.

Bleak, they are simple sugar or pantry pickles. Some call them chunk pickles but I prefer them sliced to fit on a sandwich. I'll have a look and see what I have for a recipe and post it here when I get some time.

Mimi's Kitchen is kinda cool. The kids love it. Red Robin? Alright for salty burgers (the chili burger is pure sodium!).

Coming from the land of Fish'n'Chips, I can get really picky on that stuff. No one really gets it right (although orange roughy, and halibut are good). Malt vinegar is REQUIRED...
Some of the shops back home used to do battered and fried pineapple rings. Yum!

After reading all that above, I'm hungry. And I had McYuck for lunch (I do like the McChicken Sandwich...can't help it).

I do believe that there is a fair amount of food sold in the US that directed towards the flat palate. It's all so 'safe' and homogenized. A lot of the fast food doesn't really taste of anything, and that's the way people like it. I try to go to local mom'n'pop style restaurants etc. as much as I can.

Maybe I'll do sushi tonight.....(that ought to rattle a few cages in here...)

Bleak here is one. This is a smaller batch recipe that works pretty well. You may need to experiment with the pickling spices to get a taste you prefer. I cant find exactly which spice combo I used, if I do I'll let you know but most are pretty good.

7 lbs. cucumbers
water to cover
1 quart vinegar
8 cups sugar
2 tablespoons salt
2 tablespoons mixed pickling spices

Wash cucumbers and cover with boiling water. Allow to stand for 24 hours, then repeat this process daily using fresh boiling water until the fifth day. On morning number 5, slice cucumbers into 1/4 inch thick rings.

Prepare a vinegar brine:

In a non-reactive saucepan, boil vinegar, sugar, salt and spices. Pour over cucmbers. Allow to stand for 24 hours.

The next morning, drain brine. Bring brine to a boil; add cucmbers.

Pack in sterilized jars and seal while hot.

Process 10 minutes in boiling water bath.

Here is a website with a recipe I tried and they actually link to a couple of spice places that are really good. whatscookingamerica.net/cravencosweetpickles.htm

This recipe is for 35 pounds of cuc's so you can cut it down if you like.

Here is a traditionl Bread and Butter pickle recipe, also known as turmeric pickles (pronounced too-mer-ick).

* 4 qt. small cukes, sliced thin
* 8 small onions
* 2 green peppers, sliced
* 1/2 c. salt
1. Cover with cold water.
2. Let stand 3 hours.
3. Drain and add:
* 5 c. sugar
* 3 1/2 c. vinegar
* 2 Tbsp. dry mustard
* Salt to taste
* 1 tsp. celery seed
* 1/2 tsp. turmeric powder
4. Bring to boil.
5. Add cucumber mixture and let them get hot.
6. Pack in jars

Makes 7 pints

You can leave out the green peppers with no ill effects although I do like the green peppers. If you leave them out I usually add another cuc or two. I usually back off on the salt unless using see salt as it is a kind of taste thing. And by thin slices I am talking about 3/16" or .3 to .5mm.
When doing this pickle I use the sealer lids that seal while it cools. With this pickle I use the good BAll brand jars and lids as they tend to seal much better and the pickles will keep forever on the shelf.

Tallchap, the boyz and I luuuuuvvvvvv sushi. Rays started eating it when he was about 7 or 8. His first experience was a killer. Wasabi can be your friend. Unless like any 8 year old you go against the grain and just dig a spoonfull out of the tray and decide to stir it in the soy sauce instead of using your chop stix and stirring a small amount in. Well what do 8 years old do with whatever is leftover on the spoon??? They lick it off of course! Have you ever seen an 8 year olds eyes get the size of a tea cup saucer? It did not turn him away though, he still to this day loves the stuff. It can clear your sinus very fast, and some people actually have suffered swollen sinus tissue from it if it is the real thing.

Oh ya, and Red Robin is indeed good. They gotta be the messiest burgers I have ever eaten.

Anyway, sushi rocks completely!

just got back, i had nothing but sushi and rice noodles, man it hit the spot! the soy-wasabi is prolly something i'll do for the rest of my wasabi eating career, i love salt and soy sauce so it was a natural fit, also it helped balance the pallet almost better than ginger..i was impressed. wasabi has a fast finish anyway (it's like a kick to the face then goes away rather quickly), and the soy just did the trick. wow my wine is commin' out in my posts, strange.

WYD, I'll tell him thanx for ya. And ya, that is the best part, a quick little snort to it and then it fades in with the food. No nasty hot sauce lingering torch on the palette.

Bleak, indeed.. And let me know which one you go with and how they turn out.

Never heard of YUM foods before.

Finally, speaking of deadly hot sauce. We found one in the Florida Keys called Black Death. You actually had to sign a waver and be over 21 to purchase the stuff. $75.00 for a 4 ounce bottle of the stuff. One drop in a kettle of chili and your over the top. I have not seen it anywhere but there.

Hot sauce...mmmmmmmm.....

I've seen that "Black Death" sauce here in Califronia. Yep, sign the waiver before you buy! Not sure I'll tempt fate.

I'm a big fan of "Hot Sauce From Hell", although there are the odd occasions when "Ring of Fire" (burns twice...), or "Dave's Insanity Sauce" are warranted. My all time fave is the West Indian sauce "Encona" - although I can't find it anywhere here. My friends visit from England and bring me supplies!

Quiznos would be better with "Hot Sauce From Hell" on it!

On a recent Vegas jaunt (golfing with buddies), a friend of mine picked up a huge ball of wasabi, and grinned. You've never seen money fly across the table so quick. He ate it. He got $175!
He was not a happy camper the next day!

At a former employer the whole team I worked with were huge hot sauce fans. I am not but I played along. Every Friday we had our "hot sauce break" where we all tried some different types, any time anyone went on vacation they had to bring back hot sauce from wherever they went.

There is some insanely hot stuff out there...I found if there is an eyedropper built into the cap (like kids medicine often has) it's likely something to avoid.

"Scorned Woman" was one I recall that was just friggin wicked hot...and the more you drink to cool your mouth the hotter it got...

ARGH.

Yep, hot sauce is an acquired taste to be certain. I am not one that has to see how much I can endure, I like it for what it was meant for. Flavoring and spicing things up. Tuna has been known as has Ray to over do it just for kicks. Trying to see how fast the tears will roll. Tuna's favorite is one called Da Bomb! I am not sure but I think that is another waiver signing sauce.

Snorting Wasabi is just plain dumb and stupid! The thing with Wasabi is it is more of an effect on the sinus then the palette. When eating Wasabi is is smart to not breath in the fumes, even while it is on the palette as that is the main pain giver. It can do permanent damage to ones sinus area.

Ah yes, another vote for the sliders.

Crabill Burgers in Urbana, Ohio. I live there. I actually grew up in Mechanicsburg. I moved to Urbana when I got out of school. The old Carbills so they say, the cook plates had to be scraped of rat **** every morning. The original owner closed shop and it was tore down. His granddaughter, bought a small cook trailer, a few years later, and started selling them again. They now have a new place here in Urbana. Pretty damn good little burgers. They did open another store in Bellefontaine, Ohio that has since closed (lack of business). But the Urbana one is hoppin !!! And clean :)

WOW man. Here in Philly and NY. Mom and Pops rule the day.

Yeah, obviously, we have the chains here. But why go to a chain, when it's so much more fun to argue about who make the best " ___________ " around.

In NY, it's pizza. Here in Philly, it's cheesesteaks. In Both, it's Hoagies. (Subs to the rest of you.)

Going to a different place each day for lunch is part of the fun.

Chains are boring! More Ma and Pa's!

Gimme my good old White Castle for a quick munchie snack.

But ya, there used to be a lot more of the one off type ma and pa places around here. Not too many now but still a few if you know were to look.

One of my favorites closed down last year. Out just east of the U of M campus was a place called Andy's. It was one of the best. WE still have a Porky's here as well and they have some of the best Greezee food around.

But right on the campus up on the third floor of this scary old building is a place called Annies Parlor. Killer burgers for sure. And then there is Convention Grill in Edina, yum yum.

For chain stuff we are getting a Sonic drive thru about a half mile down the road from here. I can walk off what I eat.

We can think of about 16. And only 4 of them are of the same type. (Pizza, Hoagie, Cheesesteak.)

The others are Vietnamese, Thai, Ethiopian, Italian, American, Japanese, and Chinese.

I like Subway well enough...not that I'm much of a sandwich guy. I like me a good meatball sub though.

There's another good place here in town as well that makes good subs, and that would be Firehouse Subs. Good stuff there.

There was also a local sub place up in or around Asheville NC that I went to with Heather's parents. Couldn't remember the name for the life of me, but it was a good place too. Anyhoo, don't know if Firehouse is mostly in/around Florida here, but I'm pretty sure it's a chain like Subway. Might be a step up from Subway.

Oh, and we have a sonic too, only been there a couple times, but they're not too bad. And before I forget, grats to Bushmaster for reviving a year-old thread -cackle-

Lots of "secret menu" items - stuff that you either know about or you ain't getting it ("Animal Style" grilled onions in a fantastic sauce). I have a couple of friends who visit me from England every couple of years. It's become a pilgrimage every time for them to go to In'n'Out for a "Double-Double Animal Style" - there's nothing remotely like it in England.

I'll second Bushmaster... Penn Stations hand cut fries are absolutely killer, and they use a really good, crusty, french bread for their subs .

Yum !!!!

Down south there is also WhataBurger. Good stuff as well.

I love a good sub/grinder as well. There is a place in Skokie IL that is this little bowling alley place, but they serve the most killer grinder's on the planet.

TC, In n' Out is good as well.

OK, I'm officially jealous.

I have never had an In n Out burger.

My wife has. I think I am the last person on earth to not have one.

They don't exist on the East coast.

Some one, quick! Open a franchise here!

Ya, and they are moving soooooo slowly on the Sonic here. I may have to drive down to DesMoines IA just to get one to hold me over till this one opens.

Rob, yo need to make a quick road trip for one. :-)

Why Noize, is your South Philly showing through?

Yo need. That is one of the South Philly trademarks. Hey YO!

If you start typing "Use Guys" I'll get nervous.

Nicely done Rob! Your accent is showing through.

But no, never lived there. Visited, worked there and toured through there many years back. last time I was out there was probably 5 years or more ago. Worked in some small out of the way studio setting up and re-doing the guys rack system.
