wow.

yearzero.nin.com/

the multitrack files, in .aiff format. the mix is apparently viewable in garageband. windows users can hear the files, but the mix is for GB. am i correct in saying that garageband is not available for windows? i would buy it, just to see this mix.

apparently the whole album will eventually be released this way. i have to find a way to see this material.

I am not a Reznor fan at all, but damn, that's cool.

no kidding! (though i don't know how one can't be a reznor fan)

yeah it looks like he kept basses and guitars separate. but mixed down some other tracks together into single files. filtered bits and noise pads and such seem occasionally combined and inseparable. it would be cool to really see how the mix looked not just in garageband but in protools with all the manipulation and stuff. but at least with this one can finally see how the tracks look one by one. this should help people with mixing. i still make the beginner's mistake of maxing everything out all the time. i have wanted to look at real mixes by pro bands for a long time, and specifically reznor's

yeah, it would be cool, I may have to take a look too...as far as not being a fan, well, you can read the long thread on rap, I don't really like Reznor for the same reason...plus, I just don't really "get" the music on the whole...but whatever, to each their own.

we got wind of this over on the reaper board. reaper opens aiff, so i dl them and took a look.

After hearing the tracks, and not knowing squat about the song, and very little about NIN, I was a little lost.

Seemed cool, but I didn't feel like taking a long time trying to piece together my own creation of tracks / songs that didn't appeal to me.

ymmv =).

i didn't think you could do anything with the tracks unless you had GB and a mac? Me being a fan of NIN, i'd love to mess with the tracks. when the CD with teeth came out he released 3 or tracks on GB, PT and Abletion.

yep, already goofed around with them in reaper.

justin (reaper head pgr) also dropped the aiff files down to ogg, if you're inclined to dl a skinnier version.

www.cockos.com/forum/showthread.php?t=7040

here's a linky to the thread. justin put in a reaper template file too, I just noticed, so you can open the files in the correct places, I assume. I may take another look at this, since I can now put the pieces in the right spots.

the key to getting nin is to realize it's just an art project. you liked alice cooper, right? i think marilyn manson, cooper, and nin are pretty much the same things. art projects. deliberate imagecraft.

what is reaper? i dont own mac, so i have no way to look at how these things are really layered. volumes, automation, etc--all unavailable to me. i had no idea he did this for 'with teeth' either.

www.acidplanet.com has 4 or 5 sets of song files available at any given time. Sometimes it's someone you've heard of, often not. It's a good source for drum loops if nothing else.

reaper is a new(ish) daw software, from the guy that wrote winamp. he started as trying to make a daw to do what vegas didn't. or at least something like that.

It's for windows, though he is working on a mac port.

It's been pretty well regarded, though somewhat vehemently by some of it's 'disciples'. I've been using it, and it's pretty decent. One of the lowest cpu engines around, and lots of great vst plugs come free.

the demo version is actually the full program, uncrippled. though he says a 40$ home user license is expected after 30 days, though not required. It still works, just makes you wait for 5 seconds on bootup.

In the link above i posted, there's a RPP file, which should be the layout for the song. I haven't looked at it yet, but i'm guessing that's what it is. A 'full song' template, if you will. Puts all the stuff in the right places.

Oh yeah, the install is currently at 2.2meg, and will run from a usb drive, if you don't want to do an actual install.

edit* suppose i could include the linky:

Hey guys, you do know that Sonar also will open aiff files. simply hit import audio and bring them in. I haven't had time to do anything with it yet but I know th song and am going to try and assemble it in Sonar.

I've been a member at his site since it opened. And been listening to his music since the very first underground release. I have done all the pre-sale things and gotten tons of goodies for my effort. And I have been waiting for this one getting email teasers for almost a year now. I have to admit they have made an adventure out of buying his music, or getting to the point of buying it. By doing the pre-sale thing I have gotten multi disc sets that are not available in the music stores. And most all come with lots of hidden goodies. Things like a disc that when loaded into the PC allows you to open secret areas on the website that only those who ordered the pre-sale disc can get at. Access to videos that only can be seen when the disc is in the PC. He is a friggin technology freak and uses it to the utmost. I'm now on the path of finding every movie sound track he has been involved with, and I'm finding that there are more then I thought. Trent has some classical pieces that are absolutely amazing.

And forty, you are dead on about Cooper being, or having been into the art side of it. It was more called Shock Rock back then, but it was theatrical all the same and he know it. The comparison is well put though as all three of them were classically trained musicians and all three have put art into their music. And indeed, it is not for everyone. Cooper was not for everyone either. I had many friend who just didn't get it. But then they were not into the show, just into listening. And most didn't understand Coopers music since without the visual on some of it it did not make sense. Manson and Reznor are somewhat the same. Without the visual the lyrics mean nothing to those who haven't seen it.
