Cold Enough For Ya?

Well, the thermometer outside my window reads -19 degrees. The news says the wind chill is -35 degrees. That's pretty cold.

All schools in the area are closed for the day due to the cold weather, which means a day off for me!

Is everybody else managing to stay warm?

(At least we don't have all that nasty weather they've been having down in Florida...)

Yeah, man, it's damn cold. I took the dog on about a 10 minute walk yesterday and thought my skin was freezing on my face...brutally cold. No schools closed here, but they did in out-state MN...not the the metro tho.

We are at -14, -24 wind chill. My youngest is ill today, so I get to work from home.

it was around 1 or 2 through the day yesterday, and we only got down to -4, yesterday evening. it was around 4 above this morning.

Feeling brisk.

Ridiculous! I was in Lake Tahoe a couple weeks back and it got down to 8 degrees at night. I think that was the coldest weather I ever experienced. I can't imagine negative degrees....

No, you can't, it's unbelievable. I think the coldest I have ever been out in was about -50 and that was only for a few seconds (like to run and get the newspaper or something) and almost got frostbite. When it gets that cold your skin can freeze in mere seconds. yesterday I walked the dog around the block (5, maybe 10 minutes) and I was insanely cold when I got back. But damn, the dog was bouncing off the walls, she had to get out and burn off some energy...

i havent seen temps like that in the NE for a while. i remember it being in the negative teens when i was a kid in pitt. i remember all the windows had that plastic on them and blankets were shoved under doors, etc. totally insulating the house in whatever way we could. damn cold in the basement. and that paper route sucked that week.

Sissy's, no really!

My youngest Ray just got back from camping in this stuff. The mean temp was -16 with a windchill of -51. He said he had a ball and would do it again next year. Tuna and I as well camped in the minus zero weather. We hit only -6 but with -57 windchills. Not for the ill prepared though mind you. We were geared up for it as well as sleeping gear.

But hell ya, I gotta agree this is very friggin cold weather. Have not seen the sustained below zero temps for a good while now.

i love winter camping! i did that in yellow springs, ohio once. the six of us arrived after dark and pitched the tent in the dark. no fire--too cold and wet. we sat around and drank whiskey from a flask. when it came time to sleep, we used three pairs of socks, jackets, jeans, everything.

the whiskey is what made the trip. it really does warm you, or at least you think it does. which is good enough.

The last time I was in LA I wore shorts, T-shirt and flip flops and saw tons of peeps wearing sweatshirts and hats and such. It was almost 70 degrees, I was still in heaven.

Damn, Noize ! -16/51 !(-6/57 !!!) I thought I was fellin' it camping in +27degrees a couple of springs ago, and thinking I was glad to be as prepared as I was... but, friggin' -50F's !?! That's just plain nuts ! That's that scout buisness, eh ? Crazy !

This time last year, I was being sunburned while fishing off Marco Island, so yeah... this years weather flat-out sucks, from my perspective . I got a buddy in TX that keeps offering me to move down there... he lives right on the gulf in Freeport . Every time it gets this cold, his offer becomes a bit more tempting .

yee-haw! cold weather camping. I slept outside for the winter for 2 years in a row when I was a teen. I'd head outside, throw down the groundpad, sleeping bag, and climb in. Did that almost every night. I would sleep outside at -10 and -15, but -20 would get me numb in the morning, so I'd stay inside on those nights. But those were very few. Most nights it would be between -10 and 15 above.

Gotta have the correct gear though, piling on layers doesn't do it.

And you remember not to drink any liquid in the evening. Brr-r-r-r-r.

It was -4f here again this morning. It's up around 7 now.

Yeah man, Minnesota's frickin' weird when it comes to weather. It can get up to 100+ degrees in the summer, and down past -40 in the winter. That's a hell of a spread! Especially when it's 70 one day, then it snows the next...

I lived in Gaylord(northern MI, but not as north as pjk) for a coupl'a winters, and every night for months it was the same thing... +25degrees when I went to sleep, but when I woke up for work, the temperature would read -25 . I was always impressed with that drop . The first outside breath of the morning would make your nostrils stick closed from the moisture imediatly goint to frost . I can't imagine trying to sleep in temps like that .

fox was saying it was -40 f, not windchill but temp, in embarass minn, last night. jack london says, i believe, that your spit will crackle before it hits the ground in weather like that.

Heh. My first two winters in Colorado were spent in beautiful downtown Craig in '83 and '84. Got down to 52 below zero F the first winter and 40-something below 0 the next. Our car had no crankcase heater, and a few times I had to walk a mile to the radio station, and make sure I got there a half hour early to give my face time to thaw out so I could talk. Fortunately it was uphill in only one direction. At those temperatures, your breath leaves your mouth and falls to the ground as a solid block of ice.

OK, that's an exaggeration. But I did have a brass monkey that was a soprano ever since.

I am going to florida next week (14th) until march... and am immensely looking forward to it...

I left a heat lamp in my truck all last night to see if the ignition was frozen... didn't effect the temperature one bit...

forty, at -40f I think spit freezes before it leave your lips.

Well maybe.

I get to go to Orlando the weekend of March 9th to receive my Fighting Heart award from the company I work for. I'll be looking forward to that little bit of sunshine and warmth.

I lived in the pre-Alps in Italy for a while. Went to a hockey game one night in Asiago (yes, where the cheese comes from...You should taste the real stuff...) and it was -40ยบ (that's F and C).
I was wearing two pairs of trousers, five layers of clothes (shirts/sweaters/coats etc.), gloves, and snow boots, and I was freezing! The hockey rink had a roof, but no walls (yeah, stoopid). The wind did whistle through.

The local hockey fans had their shirts off...Mad.
I guess the dancing around helped them, but it was really cold.

Asiago won 3-2. There were more penalties for fighting than I've ever seen. Even the goalies were in on it.

Hujambo said Windscreen, in reference to an automobile. I thought only that fancy guy on Speed Channel said that.

Anyway, today is the first day I have seen the temp rise out of the negative numbers in days. Well to about 2 above anyway.
