Hey, i just got a Tascam DP-01 for xmas. I'm trying to start a studio in my own home and i wanted to know if there was anyway i could import the beats i make on my computer to a track on the DP-01. I've read all the instructions and im doing everything it says but it just wont work! Will someone please help me or give me a step by step to upload my beats to this thing, is it even possible? im trying to do some hip hop stuff. i make my own beats. Is there any other way i can combine my lyrics with the beats that i make? i use FL Studio 5. PLEASE HELP.

Page 43 of the owners manual is pretty specific . If you don't have the manual, you can download the pfd file of it, like I did .

I don't have any experience with that piece of gear, but usually in a case like this, it's a matter of overlooking a step in the process . If you're sure that you are doing things exactly as stated in the manual, and not missing something, then it may be time to contact the customer service that handles that line . They should be able to walk you through the entire process, and determine what the problem is .

Sorry I couldn't be of more help .

Once again, I have to suggest the 'ol "sandwhich" problem solving approach...
I have found a real zen approach to dealing with situations like that:

I walk away, like the problem isn't happening and eat something... like a sandwhich... then I approach it again; and like magic, usually within the first 60 seconds, I have the answer .
... I know you've probably been dealing with this since x-mas but hey, it's worth a try . Don't give up, though... it's prolly something silly .

I just thought of something...

Sometimes those 'lil screens don't disclose all the info of the section of the screen you're viewing... perhaps there's some looking around with the arrows that can be done to find the file ?

"looking around with the arrows", that sounds dumb... I hope you understood what I meant .

Volcomgrom, if I might ask before you give up completely. Exactly where and how are you dropping the wav file for it to read? That unit is supposed to be the ultimate ONE BUTTON machine. The easiest to control and use. Thats their take on it anyway.

I'm just curious exactly how you are transferring the wav file to the DP-01.

Have you tried different ways of sending the file ? I've noticed some instances where audio files don't do the drag and drop thing, and one must right click and send, or copy, or move the file . Deffinately worth a shot .

I'd give their customer support a try before giving up . There's got to be some little thing that's killing the process... or maybe it is defective, they'll be able to confirm either .

Hue, how much of the manual did you cover? If I get a chance I'll DL it and have a gander maybe tomorrow.

I went right to the part reguarding the download procedure... pg 43 in the pfd... that's all I read on it . It seems pretty darn fool proof in there, so there is a chance he's got himself a bad 'un .

I'm having the same exact problem. Did you, volcomgrom, figure out what is wrong? Anyone know what is going on. I can see that the wav files are in the directory when I open it on my PC but I can't find them on the DP-01. Says import file not found.

Well, I haven't tried importing waves into the DP-01 yet, but did everyone make sure that the files were actually 16-bit 44.1 kHz mono files? You can check this, I believe, by right-clicking on the wave icon for that file. A stereo file can not be imported into one track. Just a thought. I'm gonna try this myself. Ciao

Okay -- here's the scoop -- as far as I know! I got it to work -- kind of. My first assumption was correct -- the specs cited in my previous post need to be adhered to. I saved the FL file as a wave. Then, I opened it up as a wave file on wave pad (free from shareware -- and small). Then I "saved as" and it gave me the opportunity, with that prompt, to choose how I wanted to save it (see previous post). Then, after having my PC recognize the TASCAM, of course, and I'm assuming this is not a problem, I just dragged it to that folder, followed the rest of the instructions from page 43 on the TASCAM manual and all transpired well. Well, kind of! Of course I had beautiful, swirling stereo tracks and voila -- just a boring mono. HOW TO RESOLVE, I think -- well take the 1/8" (headphone jack) out from the computer -- get an adaptor (one 1/8" stereo plug (male) to two mono 1/4" jacks (female)) and feed from this two 1/4 inch patch chords either into the stereo input on the back of the TASCAM or into two tracks on the front. I believe this is correct -- the two mono jacks, that is. I only have -- by mistake -- an adaptor that goes to two stereo jacks -- and the sound from this set-up SUCKS! I called a friend of mine who owns a recording studio and he suggested the contraption stated herein. That's where I'm at. It IS amazing that the USB in on the TASCAM has no stereo input -- but this is (almost) explicitly stated in the manual (read between the lines). I've actually got a problem -- next post. Hope this has been helpful and that someone's actually reading this! Cheers from dreary West Virginia.

OK, Here's my problem -- and I thought I'd leave it in this thread, since here's where I'm at! All was working as planned (see above post). UNTIL -- out of the blue -- no sound from my Dell Latitude laptop -- nothing -- nada -- except, the CD plays fine. Fruity Loops LOOKS like it's playing -- bars moving, etc. -- but NO SOUND from any application except for from the CD. I checked the PC volume controls and all that -- it appears normal. Any ideas?

I have actually gotten really good use from the dp-01 going back and forth between the pc...the one thing you want to make sure is that the .wav file is mono, not stereo. click on properties to make sure or open it up in any wave editing program and see if there are one (mono) or two (stereo) "waves"..you cannot import stereo .wavs to the dp-01...make sure that you have open tracks on the tascam when you are importing files...the best results that i have gotten is when i do a basic mid volume recording on the tascam, export all the wav files to pc, edit/chop/slice/dice and clean up the files on a .wav editing program, then import them back to the dp-01 and slap on some eq and master it up. your best bet would be to do some very minimal eqing througout this process then when youre all done, take all the wav files and give them to a recording engineer to do some real eqing and mastering...thats why its best to do a "mid-volume" recording firsthand to leave a little room for eq/volume adjustment/effects/compression/mastering etc. If you want to check out some of our half-assed (lol) recordings using this method, go to myspace.com/snuggleblade or isound.com/snuggleblade..most of these songs were recorded on the tascam dp-01..

ive had this thing for almost 2 years now , and still havent figured out how to transfer from pc to recorder!
however, i do know how to get the beats into your 8 track by using cds!
first off ... it has to be in wav format .. mono .. not stereo ... 144something hertz! lol .. dont remember ... refer to book! otherwise , it wont read it as a data file!
once on data disk ... you must go to song>
then create> name it whatever u want
after creating ... go to data> then import>
and it will pull up your list of whatever is on the cd!
the thing is ... i have been through 1000's of cds! and am now trying to find out how to transfer from pc to recorder so i dont use anymore!
the book doesnt go into detail on how to do this,,, its saying my usb has some kind of malfunction , and that i need the correct driver for it? any clues on where to get this driver??? or do i even need one?
thanks for any help, and i hope this helps you! ive been doing it this way for almost 2 years! i should know this recorder by now ... they should go more into detail!

You have to use the windows drivers for USB to connect to it. It will actually appear as another hard drive on your PC and you should be able to transfer files back and forth that way.

You need to do the usual look for hardware thing within windows control panel and let it find the Tascam and then install it as a hard drive.

Just remember that when you go to disconnect it that you use the windows disconnect icon down in the lower right of your screen.
