People are so lame...

I was watching the news last night (my mistake, admittedly) and a story came on about some kid that bought an external hard drive from a local Office Max. He took it home and it was full of files from a dudes personal data and the UPS store he owns (including customers and stuff). Apparently this guy (who was pretty easy to find) had bought it and returned it cuz it wasn't what he wanted.

So, guess what the story was...yep, you guessed it, it's Office Max's fault for not formatting the hard drive, not the dudes fault for being an f-in idiot.

Now, when I was a tech at a local computer store, we had policies regarding formating HD's before putting them on the shelves, most places likely do, it's also likely Office Max does but somebody was in a hurry and didn't...but...it's still just another example of how big of friggin pansies people have become...

"Waaaaaaa, Office Max didn't do for me what I was too stupid to do....waaaaaaa."

Sissy.

hell every time i get a new HD or PC for that matter I wipe and reformat the drive(s). that's just what i do . I can understand a customer not being happy about buying someing that has files and stuff already on it, i might be a little WTF. Though this was probably on sale in a return bin and from personal experiance you take your chances with retured items. Peopel will ***** and moan about anything if you give em a chance, but i think office max should have checked the HD out before putting it back on the rack .

It wasn't the dude that bought it that was bitching (hell, he was a good Samaritan in my book) it was the ******* that didn't delete his own info before returning it.

I get used computers at work from other departments all the time. One guy's computer (he's a statistician) had all his online gambling info... :)

Of course a simple format c: /q won't be of much use; nothing like a real low level format that will also identify any actual physical bad sector...

Its the same kind of lame people that send their credit card number by email or answer their fake bank email request providing their personnal informations ...

I'm sure it violates UPS policy to not properly dispose a computer... I use dban dban.sourceforge.net/

When I was in the military and we replaced drives we had to package them in security envelopes and send then to the division headquarters in minneapolis.

As far as I know, the only way to truly secure a discarded hard drive is to grind the platters into sand-sized pieces...

A bank technical manager I know says they low level format their drives, then drill a hole thru it before discarding them.
