It's been a seemingly endless time since I did anything in the 'studio' . This is just the first run through for this number, so I know it has a ton of issues, but I think that the guitar tracks might be keepers(with excption to the ending) . The mix is pretty much centered, and no eq'ing has been done yet... just a 'lil compression here and there .

I don't really care for the abrupt ending that it currently has, so that's going out on the next take . Any other suggestions for this songs structure could be helpful . Oh, and it's a little on the quite side thusfar, so please turn the knob a bit . : )

Hey Hue! I really enjoyed this. Pretty nice sound for just a rough. I like your voice. I really think the lyrics are pretty cool. Melody is great!

Thanks ! Actually that's TheWent's voice, and guitar playing... I did the hand drum, and pressed the buttons .

I must admit, I too was impressed by his lyrics this time... that's usually my job . I think he may have been writing from experience on this one . heh

Thanks for taking the time to listen, and for the feedback .

Not bad for a scratch track. Indeed, the wents voice sounds pretty good. I like the smack sound of the guitar, kinda adds something. Oh ya, and the drum is cool too. Kind of inspirational sounding.

Cant wait to hear it in final form.

Hey Hue this one has real potential, already sounds good in the rough form (which don't sound all that rough btw ;) Vox could come up a bit I'm having trouble hearing the lyrics, but the melody sounds great and upbeat. I too like the sound of guitar and hand drums. Lots of possibilities either keeping it simple or going full bore on it.

Funny that you mention that OD... I was thinking that same thought last night . There are a few different ways with this one to achieve 'full bore', so I called Brent and discussed that a bit . He agreed with the rerecording of it, but I had to talk him out of wanting to record the guitar and vox simultaniously . He explained that it was the reason for the vocals being slightly off, here and there, and that would cure it . I argued that the cure was to stay in time, and keep things separated... which he would eventually appreciate the reasons for later on when mixing .

I wish I could play a piano... I keep hearing piano in it .

That'd be swell !

I'm not a pianist, so I don't even know what to suggest, but I understand the reason I hear a piano is that "hoppiness" of that rhythm... that bummp-bump-flow thang .

ha That makes no sense .

Maybe you could throw some sample ideas at me to bounce off theWent ?

What was that one TV Funhouse sketch ?...

"The Old Man, The Baby, And The Guy On Mushrooms"

... they should add The Great Went, as well .

Really though, the guy is a friggin' savant... there's a reason he never shows his face around here .

Anyway, I tweaked the livin' crap out of it this weekend . Things came out SO nice that I've decided to go with this version . I'm a bit pissed that I didn't make an mp3 to share with ya's, though... I really learned alot on it, especially in the gain-staging during mixing... made all the right mistakes(just to make sure), and then fixed them . I feel as though I've reached a new level . I'll bounce it off ya's tomorrow, as I'd like to know if it's just me 'thinking' I've gotten better with m'a mixes, or if it's a fact . I know there's the "If it sounds good, it is good...", but really, it's just a bit wierd for us to sound 'good' . bah ! ; p

Dude, that turned out pretty dang good. I like the way you got the percusive playing of the guitar to stand out a tad more. It sounds great along with the hand drum.

The vocals though, man that is a cool sound. Attributed to The Went or your mixing. I'll go more with the mixing thing. But his voice is really pretty cool sounding for this tune. You really got it pumped up, lots of power there but doesn't tear into the guitar sound at all. Is it all The Wents voice or are you in there as well? Either way, the vox sound just so thick and rich and creamy!

Anyway, thanx for putting that one up again. Its in my HRC premier list.

IF I could make two thumbs go up I would. :-)

i gotta agree, these vocals are way cool...i can hear a doubble track, but sometimes it seems like ya got a reverse reverb on there aswell....WOAH!! echo voice just happpend! awsome....the acoustic guitar isn't brite, which i dig the hell outta. i always have the tendancy to make it 'clear' sounding by gettin' them highs....but the soft strum sound f'n rocks! is that a thin pick aswell?

Sweet . I was wondering if the double tracked vocals were too much with the way the song is... glad that isn't the case . There are actually three tracks of vox... two throughout, and one for accents . Yeah, he has a great voice... I've been writing for that voice for the last twelve years, and could do another twelve, easy . No reverse reverbs were used, though it was considered... I went with a medium ambient/room for it .(Perfect Space)

The guitar was done as one mono track, and then doubled with a chorrus applied to the second track and panned about 30% in each direction . I believe I handed him a medium pick for that Chris, and mic'd it with a single LCD(Oktava mk219) .

The hand drum got the Tincanbug approach(kind'a), with an LCD on top, and a dynamic 'duct taped' inside it... one mono track panned straight up the middle .

Each track got it's dose of eq, and either compressor, or multiband compressor,(the aux bus as well) with a multiband, and a maximizer at the main .

Thanks alot for the listens, guys ! The difference between good and bad can be a bit foggy after so many listens... I really do appreciate it .

Yep, it really sounds good to me. I ran it in the car today, it really sounds good in there. Had it cranked up and just enjoyed it in solitude.

But hell ya, it sounds like you did a great job if ya ask me.

This has a goood balanced sound for such simple instrumentation. Its very full. The doubled vocal is critical, it definitely helps keep it filled out throughout the song.

I like the subtle hand drums in there too, they sneak in from time to time.

It sounds like you've done a great job at the mastering (or master bus) level here. The overall EQ and compression is great. It seemed a little over-squashed at first to me but as the song progressed it grew on me.

Sorry it took me so long to listen to this...by the thread title I didn't even realize it was a song posting :)

Another worry of mine durring the mixdown... overcompression . I sometimes tend to overcompensate for the lack of headroom with it . Very little eq was applied to the tracks at all on this one... just a roll off hear and there . Glad to know that the newly thought-out techniques are paying off somewhat . I feel like we're onto something after all this time . I have to credit the decent sounding vocals to the vocal booth that we use... there is a subtle, but noticeable difference between tracks recorded in the mix-room . You may even be able to tell... on the third verse, both of the vox tracks are done in the booth, and on verses one and two only one of the double-vox tracks were done in the booth, with the other having been recorded in the mix room... subtle, but noticeable . I had considered rerecording everything because of this, but decided that the performances that theWent had there were worth working around .

Thanks for the listen/critique... way cool of you !

Yes, I tend to get carried away with the overall compression of the final mix.

I've started fooling around with multiple stages of compression instead of trying to get lots of volume out of the mix with one compressor.

In Cubase SE, I get 3 slots for master bus effects, plus 1 slot for master gain. What I've started doing is putting a compressor before a limiter. The compressor, with a relatively high threshold and low ratio, softens the louder parts a bit, and makes any action taken by the limiter less harsh and sudden...if that makes sense.

I'm still trying to decide what to put in that "master gain" slot though. Maybe something along the lines of Magneto or something.

Indeed, multiple stages of compresion has always been the biggest part of it for me. It really started when I started using sampled and synth type drum sounds. Most needed differant types or amounts of compresion, so whats a guy to do. Use lots of differnat stages of compresion. Viola, problem solved.

And hell ya Hue, not just a listen to criteque. It gets played a lot in there. I started compiling all the music from HRC peeps into a main folder with everyone in their own subfolders, if they deserve it. And then loading the folders onto CD. IT works great as the head unit in my car has a great menu for searching out by artist/folder. Besides, its fun as hell to just set it to random and go.

Theres so much good music that has come out of the peeps on this site.
