Are iPods intelligent?

Whenever I listen to my iPod mini in Shuffle mode, I'm always amazed at the order in which songs are played. It's almost as if my iPod knows me and the music I like to listen to.

For example, whenever it plays a BoDeans song, sure enough it will play a Gear Daddies tune, and then a Jayhawks song and then another Bodeans song. Or it will play a few Beatles tunes, and then a few Monkees songs, and then the Turtles. All of the songs have the same "Genre" label, yet the iPod seems to group them even more specifically than just Genre. It seems to know types of music that are very closely related. It'll play a Shawn Mullins tune, and then a Matthew Sweet tune and then a Thorns song.

This seems to happen on a fairly consistent basis. Is there a wordly explanation for this, or am I just imagining all of this? Has anybody else experienced this phenomenon?

I'd say you pay WAY more attention to your music players than I do...

Windows Media Player does the same thing for me in shuffle mode. Like when I have company over and turn on some background music, it seems to always pick songs that I have in common with my present company. Out of about 2500 songs, it'll pick some that I haven't heard since last time I was hanging out with whoever it is that's visiting. Kinda creepy.

I think its just a matter of your mind only really paying attention to the songs that reinforce that pattern and ignoring the ones that don't.

I remember there was a website that would play songs based on the type of music you liked. I can't remember the name of the site though. Seems to me it was some sort of research project.

I must have missed the pandora talk the first time around. I just signed up and started listening. It seems pretty cool so far. Interesting idea.

I'm thinking it must be coincedance. I have noticed it before with media player. But it is not a repeated phenom here. It has as well happend with my mp3 head unit in the car. I hit shuffle and it has a couple of times seemed to bring together tracks I might have put in that order in my mind. But it is not repeatable very often.

I would imagine it might remember tracks you skipped to at time. But I would also venture a guess that if it was capable of that they certainly would use that as a huge advertising tool. Because it certainly would appeal to loads of kids out there just for its tech appeal.

And I gotta agree with dB, you pay way to much attention to what your iPod is doing. :-)

It's true:

I pay WAY too much attention to things like this...that's the way my mind works... Tad, I'm glad I'm not the only crazy one.

I probably only notice it when it happens...

My i-Pod never plays BoDeans songs, or Jayhawks. Possibly because I've never put any songs on there. Mines been sitting in it's box for a couple of years now!
I need just a USB cable for it (it came with a Firewire cord), and I'll be in business.

I think I played solitaire on it a few times...

Tsk. "one of these days..."
(It was a gift from a TV show my wife attended, so it's not like I spent money on it, and then let it sit there...If I was going to spend the money, I'd have bought some new pick-ups or something).

But I do know what you mean on the 'random' play thing. I have a 60-CD player in the house, and if I put it on Random, there are times when you almost know what's coming next.

I always seems to get in on these threads late, but I think the almighty Power of Suggestion has more to do with these things than you may give it credit for.

My girlfriend is a magician. Once, while I was driving, she touched my leg and I turned into a motel.
