Does anyone on here have any experience with the MOTU Symphonic Universal Orchestra Virtual Instrument software? I'm looking to do a little playing with some symphonic software but not really sure which one to try. Thanks all!

I own the MOTU Symphonic Instrument. There are many choices out there but the MOTU has a great price point. I did alot of research before purchasing it and listened to many demos. EWQL offers some great software but for alot more cash. There is also the Tascam Gigastudio which has much acclaim. There is also Garritan Personal Orchestra which I have tinkered with a little bit. It seems to be on par with the MOTU as far as sound quality. I don't like the interface nearly as much though and I dont think it has some of the interesting historical instruments that the MOTU has such as the Hopsichord, Lute, Recorder, Viol etc.

I cannot compare the MOTU software with others since I have only used this one. However I think it is awsome. It is incredibly easy to use. You can figure out how it works just by looking at a picture of the interface online really. The sounds are all great, I really have no complaints at all, you can definatly make some great sounding orchestral pieces with this software.

Price matters alot with this type of software though of course. I think you get great quality out of the MOTU which exceeds its worth of 300$. But then you can get REALLY serious with EWQL stuff, but then you are jumping past 1000$. So keep all that in mind.

If you have any specific questions about it, feel free to ask.

Thanks for the input. I looked at EWQL and it sounds great but those prices are a little more than I can afford right now. The sound samples I have listened to for MOTU seems like it would work for me. I'll check into the other ones you mention but right now I'm leaning towards the MOTU. Thanks!

No problem. The garritan personal orchestra is the only software I can recall that is in the same price range as the MOTU. The Tascam Gigastudio comes in three versions (Solo, Ensemble, Orchestra). The Orchestra version is the most expensive with the most samples included at around $500. Gigastudio works with expandable libraries that you can purchase, none of which are cheap. So in a sense, it can become a money pit if it doesnt come with all of the samples you want to begin with. However, many film and Game scorers claim to use and love their Gigastudios. Whether it be for a rough draft to be later played by a real orchestra or even for the real deal.

Its worth looking around, but I do personally like my MOTU.

I will just add on the good side for GigaStudio that it is a good way to buld slowly if you like. And the libraries that they have are absolutely huge. The vast selection of insrument versions is huge.

Now I am not a huge user, and I do prefer my other samplers and such at the moment. But Giga does have a good deal of benifits going for it in the shears size of some of the instrument libraries.

But as stated the MOTU product is absolutely stunning as is the Garriton. And I do use a small version of Garriton and love it.
