I thought i'd introduce myself before I embarrass myself!! I have only read a few threads so im not inclined to start posting a lot of replies as of yet. However I do pose a question; How old do you think you have to be to stop playing hard Rock/Heavy Metal, and as a "older" Rocker who has no Formal Training (see profile) is it ever too late to learn the art of recording, songwriting and the overall theory of music?? OK so thats 2 questions.

May 08, 2006 03:42 pm Hey there Shadow,
Man if you still feel the music you should be playing a solo on the stairway to heaven. Nobody else I know off has ever stopped playing their music because they got old. Maybe if you were going out raving and boshing hard drugs every weekend it might be a good idea to slow down a bit but other than that never stop doing what you love. I knowe I wont. I'll keeplearning new skills to get more out of my passion.
As far as recording goes it's probably a good thing you've left it untill now. Good gear is quite cheap and if you'd started 10 years ago this place woudln't be here to help you (and me) for that matter.
Welcome to HRC.

Rock as hard as you want, for as long as you want! And then record it and let us hear :-D
May 08, 2006 03:57 pm welcome to HRC!
it's never too late to learn something, but ya gotta be realistic...the art of digital recording takes about 1 to 2 years to get comfortable with depending on how bad ya wanna learn, and how good you wanna sound...alotta people think the ability to burn a cd equals "cd quality audio" this is not the case, and can lead to years of frustration chasing that "pro sound"....on the other hand, if you're in it for fun, then it can most definately be a rewarding experiance.....
same with learnin' music theory, if you've got a computer, you can do it for free (same with learning how to record)....everything you need to know is out there somewhere on the net, it just depends on how determined and resourcefull ya are...
and you're never too old to rock!
cheers

May 08, 2006 03:58 pm Hey, Thanks Flashman I appreciate the reply!
I've got a lot to learn about music and recording, I hope HRC will provide some assistance!!
May 08, 2006 04:00 pm Thanks D, I have some "stuff" I recorded on my Fostex VF80, Im going to upload as soon as I get the chance.
May 08, 2006 04:04 pm Thanks WYD, you are absoultely right, Ive had my VF80 for appx 3yrs, although i have probably only have "several hours" of record time, and I know I have not tapped into the full potential of the machine yet, I still know that i can do so much better.
Its desire that creates the need!!!

Rock as hard as you want for as long as you want. Only metal vocalists really need to fret the age monster - and Dio's a pretty good example of a guy whose voice didn't waver an inch.
Unless you are physically incapable, who cares how old you are?
Rock on!

May 09, 2006 08:18 pm Shadow, your only as old as you let yourself think you are. dB will tell ya I am OLD, but I still get into every kind of music there is. And hard rock is still ranked up there. I can listen to what my kids all listen to and not disslike it. I enjoy all the new music I can get my hands on. I might not still write much in the harder rock realm, but it doesnt mean I cant and wont.
As for the learning to record. Yer never to old, I learn new stuff almost every day.
And welcome aboard!

May 11, 2006 02:58 am Welcome to HRC Shadow! As the others have said play whatever kind of music you want for as long as you want. You're never too old to learn, as always it's how much drive you have to learn that counts. I started learning to play drums and recording on my PC in my 50's. :)
