Hello all,

I have ben working hard on my recording and have bought a new del 3100 desktop with P4 processor. I was looking forward to posting some mixes up here when I removed the case to insert my Delta 44 in the PCI slot.

To my horror there was no such thing. Just what looked like two small ISA slots. I know have a nice new PC but no way to record on it. The dell website says that the dimension 3100 has two pci slots but if these small ones are pci they look very different and shorter than my old pc.

Can I buy a converter for an ISA slot so that I can conect he delta 44 or am I going to have to send the computer back?

£500 is an expensive mistake to make!
Can anybody advise me please?

Many thanks,

Flashy

Just had a quick google but couldn't find anything - but that is not to say it doesn't exist, I am a bit computer illiterate at the best of times.

if in the spec it had PCI slots listed then you have every right to demand a refund or exchange because the spec is wrong.

ISA? There is no way on earth a P4 computer has an ISA slot, it just can't be, I haven't seen an ISA slot in years...

probably pcix1 slots. they're only about an inch long. i have a few in my biostar board. doubt I'll ever use them though.

See here for pix: www.redbooks.ibm.com/abstracts/tips0456.html?Open

Maybe an exchange would be in order.

the 3100 should have
2 PCI slots
1 PCIe x1 slot

My guess is that the 2 PCI slots are already used by a videocard and soundcard...maybe a network card or modem...

Here's a link to the insides of the Dell Dimension 3100. It looks to me like the 2 PCI slots are in the bottom right of this picture.

Video card, NIC, Soundcard all look to be onboard

Yep, those are PCI slots.

Can someone explain why Dell has a thing for building their PC's backwards from the normal config? I hate the way they have their crap laid in there. I suppose it makes it so you can olny use the propriatary MoBo.

you have all been very helpful as usual. sadly you have been helping a complete monkey.

in my new computer excitment i mistook the two pci slots for the wrong thing. after spending two hours trying to get my card in the hole and contemplating the use of a hacksaw i realised my mistake.

i was trying to install my video card not my delta 44. talk about circle in a square hole.

what a primate!

cheers guys. all is good now. just waiting for that usb converter kit for my hardrive and i'll be posting some tunes
