Please help with a simple preamp question...

I am just wondering what the differences are between some of the available computer preamps. For instance, there is the M-audio mobile-pre available for $150 retail and it has 16-bit converters with the basic functions. Then there is the Mbox for around $300 I think and it has 24-bit converters but since you have to mix down at 16-bits for a cd anyway I don't see any advantage. Is there any better quality here?

Also there are the E-mu PCI cards, I have been told that these are of lesser quality than the m-audio mobile-pre but I can't see how that would be because the cards have more connections and are connected directly to the PC without use of a USB cable.

I have an M-audio Mobile-Pre and I would just like to know what some of you more experienced studio owners are using and what some of your opinions are.

highter bit rate is an advantage because as audio gets processed and edited and such the bit rate gets slowly bastardized and dumbed down...the higher esolution you have to start with the more clean it will be in it's final 44.1/16 bit state...and true CD-quality red book formatting is actually around 13-14 bit or so...

The emu 'M' cards are 24bit / 192khz. If there's any better sample rate than that, I haven't seen it.

I've heard good things about the 'M' class of their stuff.

Um, both my ESI interfaces do 24/192. As do many other audio interrfaces out there now. Its almost standard on anything over $150.00 now.
