I cant record because i have a loud buzzing and/or airy sound that comes across my head phones. is it because im using a cheap/old mic some leem pos and crappy walkmen headphones?

other equipment is a soundcraft 4 mixer and audiophile 2496. do i need a mic preamp to cut this crappy noise out?

I dont nkow, if this is the same, but when i record for an extended period of time, or especially if im mixing with lots of effects, ill get a buzz throughout my system, it even registers in the meters on cubase. but i just restart my computer and it goes away, give it a rest for a while.
It might be the mic you have, if you say its really old and cheap, not so much that its cheap, but i noticed most people just keep turning that up and then you start getting noise.

Check if your headphone, or other unbalanced cables (doesn't the 2496 have RCA's?) are running over any power cords.

Are you plugging your mic into an XLR input?

I used to get the same thing as crux on SL 1.0.

Coltrane... man, do I feel your pain ! I've been dealing with the same problem for a few months now . I've gone through each piece of gear in my signal chain, and listened to it separately to find out two things...
1- There is an induced 60-cycle hum within the fuse box section of my house that directly affects the studio .(and only the studio's section)
2- Upon moving everything out to the living room, and running these tests again through electricity that seems to be clean... there is a rather loud hum coming directly from my computer . As loud, but with a different tone, as the one coming from the fuse box in the studio .

I have no idea if the hums are related, or what it will take to fix the compy's issue, but the fuse box is getting replaced with a breaker-box within the next month or so . My strategy for the computer is to pull what cards I have in there out, and reconfigure them withing the IDE chain, to see if that does the trick... it may be the soundcard itself, or my monitor which is on it's way out so...

There's just so many things that can cause this type of problem... persistance, and patients is key . heh, I WILL seek, and eliminate my hums !

can you sample the hum so we can give a listen?

If it goes away on reboot it sounds like one I had with my Q10 before SP1 came out...

I think I got it to go away by turning off DHCP

start->run services.msc

you'll lose your network connection until you restart the service or reboot.

well using the noise gate helped a little but I moved my entire computer and setup into another room where my piano is to record the the track i recorded in there is still pretty terrible and hummy, ill try sample it and get it online but i think I might try setting everything up well so nothing crossing voer one more time and then come back because it seem to work fine in my room.

If you're on a circuit with a flourescent light, or a dimmer, or a fan (like the furnace?), or the fridge, you can get a hum, also...
