Do people actually buy this stuff?

I've known some stupid people in my life, and I've seen evidence of even more idiocy on television and the internet.

But ANYBODY that would buy ANY of this stuff, especially at these prices, needs a piece of lead that's about .45 inches in diameter inserted into the back of their head at a high velocity:

Honestly, who is buying this shoit?

I guess I've led a sheltered life. I've thought that people that swear by 'monster cable' were foolish but never imagined this stuff. $250K for a video projector? $495 for a wooden knob? Recycled high voltage insulators being sold as 'cable elevators'? This is stupid that's painful. This make those Nigerian e-mails look like a sound investment. Ouch.

Well, if you have money to burn there are a lot goofier things to spend money on...look at the Enron and Tyco execs, spening $10,000 on an umbrella stand, $8,000 on a shower curtain.

Hell, people think I am goofy for having a $1,400 guitar (considering I am a bass player :-)...

It's all whats important to you or what gives you bragging rights.

LOL but at least the umbrella stand actually holds umbrellas upright, and the shower curtain actually keeps water in the shower and not on the bathroom floor.

The makers of these "audiophile" products actually claim that their products improve the sound of audio equipment. This is bullshit of the highest degree. Snake oil I say!

No volume knob, no matter what it's made of, will have any impact whatsoever on my (or anyone else's) stereo. It's just maddening to me that these people have the audacity to market this tripe, and that there are morons out there who eat this stuff up!

I dunno, a good friend of mine once listened to a set of $40,000 custom built speakers which may seem stupid but he said the experience was indescribeable...so, well, I dunno, seems like snake oil, but who knows...I'll never know, I can promise you that.

If I had 9 grand to spend on a speaker cable, this is how I'd justify it: I'd model the human ear response to sound with a neural network. Take the signal from the stereo and have the neural network manipulate it in the best way (based on the speakers) that the human ear could pick up all the nuances in the music. This would explain the "break in period" of the cables, as in the neural network iteratively processing the input/output until it comes to a global optimum (after the break-in period) based on the shadow prices generated from the iterative optimization of the human ear response.

How's that for engineering bullcrap? =) HAHAHA...

speak of the devils www.thesmokinggun.com/arc...ml?link=rssfeed

My bad, the shower curtain was only $6,000, that's more reasonable...

Well, the speakers themselves may be able to be valued at those kind of prices according to the build of the speaker and such. I once owned a pair of Voice of the Theatre speakers made by Altec. Huge muthers that took 8 guys to move, and thats after removing the solid granite tops. And they were state of the art for audiophiles that liked it loud back in the 70's.

In the late 70's I owned a pair of flat panels, called Magnaplane. They were made up of 3 seperate panels with the center providing the subsonic and the outside's providing the mids and highs. The wer about 5' wide and 6' tall. But they had the ability to stand the hair up on your arms during Jon Lord or Kieth Emerson keyboard solo's. No other speaker I have owned could do that. But then again, not other speaker took that much power to run either.

As for the rest of the audio miracles, all that crap is bunk. But someone is buying it and believing it.
