I'm new to computer recording an need some advice on just what equip I need.
Have a fast computer, Emu sound card, Cakewalk Pro Audio, and Guitar Tracks Pro.
I play alone and want to record my guitars, (electric & acoustic electric) as well as my yamaha keyboard. I run my guitars through a yamaha DG Stomp processor. Do need some type of small mixer ? I also need to record vocals.
Any suggestions are appreciated.

I would definately suggest a mixer especially with the mic inputs. The mixer just makes it much easier to switch what you are inputing into the PC. You dont say if you allready have a mic or not, but the mixer would also benifit there. You can start out small or mid sized depending on what you want in the end. For what you say you are looking to do I would say a small mixer would be just fine.

Have a look here at some of the mixers available. www.homerecordingconnecti...st&cat_id=1

Otherwise you can also hit up Musicians Friend and take a look there as well. They have a very good selection as well.

You don't mention which EMU card, 0404, 1212 or 1820, or a 1616 even? I tell for certain, but does the DG have S/PDIF out? It looks like it, but they just call it a "Digital Out" at 48k, 20 bit. If you've got a 1212 or higher, you could possibly use that option. Are you aware that EMU has a new software bundle available? If you just got your card, and it has the old bundle, call them up (phone number is on www.emu.com) and see if they won't upgrade you.

Neither the 0404, nor the 1212 have pre-amps, and the 1820 & 1616 only have 2 each (pretty good ones, tho). As Noize2u says, a mixer with pre-amps is almost a necessity. As a minimum, I'd spend $100 US on a mic (Shure SM58), which is an investment you'll always use later...

Jmail,
I have the 0404. My yamaha keyboard has a usb midi output. I did update my 0404 drivers to v1.8, but are you saying they have a new interface for the 0404?

I'm totally new to computer recording, and my biggest hurdle is understanding the signal paths on the control panel (emu). I don't know whats coming in, going out, to where, etc! I just have to fiddle with it till I get a signal! lol

jmail mentioned in a previous thread: www.homerecordingconnecti...=9167&frm=1 that the patchmix program is a pain to get used to.

PatchMix is still a complex bear (feeble, dirty, old mind, here), but I'm very adept at the use of cheat sheets (Edit: it's also a very flexible & useful program)... I've also been hearing that the November issue of Sound On Sound magazine has an article on PatchMix and how to plumb its depths...

Randy, the Software Bundle that came with the older packaging of the 0404 has WaveLab Lite, Cubasis (version escapes my memory, which ain't hard to do...) and Adobe Acrobat Reader (oh, wow!). The new Production Bundle has Cubase LE, Sonar LE, Ableton Live Lite, WaveLab Lite and a couple "lite" versions of VSTs, AND ProteusX LE, which is just a mini version of the small version of EmulatorX... Give EMU a call if you don't have it. They might charge you $20, but then again, they might not...
