I write alot of songs and to save me hastle and time i wanna set up a simple midi system on one of my computers, so if i have a song idea i can quickly wak it down with midi rather than have to record my songs in audio.

My sound card has GM on it, which is all i need so no need to get a sound module, and im using cubase sx as my sequencer and i know all this works fine with midi as im able to make midi tracks by just inputing the data manually, but obviously a trigger would be alot easier and quicker rather than using the pencil tool every step of the way.

i have a bog standard keyboard which will make a fine midi trigger, but im not sure how to connect it to the PC, ive read about using the joy stick port or USB ports in conjuction with the midi in/outs on the keyboard, but i wanna know wat to do before i go out and buy the cables which is all i need to get this working (In thorey).

so in a nutshell, where do i plug in my keyboard and what do i change in the software to make cubase recognise it.

ne helpful comments welcome, thanks

chris

Connect your keyboard to your computer via usb or midi in, restart the computer, launch cubase, from the file menu, select the appropriate recording template(8 track midi would probably be best). You will need to select the available midi input on the track you plan to record on. When you click on it, you should get a menu of the enabled midi inputs. I'm doing this from memory since im not at my workstation, so I hope I haven't left anything out.
