dithering

hey there everyone!

i should have asked this question sooner really but what the hey.

today i started recording with my mate's band. just a 3 track demo which they'd like to put on the internet and burn to cd to send to promoters.

they know a fair bit about sample rates and whatnot as they all study physics at my college, so i decided to try this project in 48000Hz and 28 bit .wav format. however, i know that when this is burnt to CD it will have to be converted to 41000Hz and 16 bit by dithering.

i am recording the session in cubase, then plan to do stereo editing in wavelab lite before burning the tracks to cd. at what point should i dither? i know that in the export options of cubase i can choose this lower quality format. or does wavelab lite have the option to dither? or does it automatically dither by burning to a cd...?

as always thanks for any help!

Do all the processing you can at the higher freq & bit rate (supposedly "cleaner" processing & allows for more "headroom" - but I'm no scientist), last step would be to dither-down. Now, for the fun part... You can dither in many "fashions", in many programs. Very seldom, will any 2 "dithers" "sound" the same. I happen to like the "dither" I get from my Cubase VST v5.1 at it's default settings, but I get some odd artifact every once in a while from WaveLab Lite at its defaults. So a few "experiments" are in order to find out which one you like. What ever you do, DON'T let your burning program do it for you, especially Nero. I forgot to "dither" from 48-16 once and Nero did it automatically "on-the-fly". It sounded worse than a 96k mp3 afterwards!

heheheh, point taken jmail - i'll give it a try in cubase and wavelab, and experiment with the settings *nods*
