a question on routing...

hey everyone :)

so my delta 66 arrived yesterday! i've spent this afternoon playing round with it, and i have to say i'm extremenly happy (especially cos my audiophile 2496 made £40 on ebay!)

my first question is with regards to the outputs on it.... ok so far i have a Bus 1, which sends to outs 1 and 2 on the breakout box. I've plugged my monitors into there, and they work fine. I also have a Bus 2, sending to 3 and 4.

Into output 3, i connected a pair of headphones (i'm soon gonna buy a headphone splitter www.studiospares.com/prod...p;p=1&gid=2 and connect that to it instead). I did this because i liked the idea of being able to switch between tracks coming out of the monitors or out of headphones with the click of a button.

The problem is... Bus 2 sends to 3 AND 4, so despite using stereo headphones, i'm only getting anything through the left ear.

Is there any way i can configure Cubase SE to send an output signal to JUST 3 (and would this signal still be stereo if i used stereo headphones?) i just read through the whole cubase manual and couldn't find how to do this.... and i'm assuming that each output of the delta 66 is mono... making stereo imaging impossible, but i'd only use headphones for recording musicians (eg, for a vocalist to wear so they can hear the backing track) so a mono signal is fine so long as it's in both ears!

as a last resort i will run headphones out of the monitors themselves. if i can't use just output 3, is there any device that would combine outputs 3 and 4 into a headphone signal?

sorry that was a bit long winded. i have probably missed something very easy here. i'm sure my music tech teacher showed me a way that you can create busses, and choose what goes where, but i can't find it and i'm at a bit of a loss right now!

maany thanks!
Jon

yep output 3 is MONO only which means LEFT speaker in your phones... sorry think of some other way....an outboar mixer (small one for under $100 might be in need)

would a y lead into that headphone splitter i linked to do it? ie - two mono jacks from outs 3 and 4 into the single stereo in of the headphone splitter?

what i'm conserned about is that those outputs are line level....you need some kind of headphone amp for it....i wouldn't plug the phones into line level sources.

do phones and line level signals not agree with each other?

does the signal need to be boosted, hence use of an amp?

i guess i'll just resort to plugging a headphone splitter into my monitors for now...

yeah, you'll get sound out of line level stuff, and i have used headphone outputs to line in's of recorders. definately not recomended though.

I used a y-cable out of my 44's outs into headphones. certainly not ideal, but it works.

why is it not recommended to use phones with line level signal? i thought phones took the same signal as monitors......

headphones are speakers...speakers need amplifiers....line level is not amplified, when you run a line level signal to a monitor it gets amplified alot before the signal reaches the speaker.

ohhh i see! wow. i am a tad stupid.

well i've got quite a few options now... depending how my cash flow is going, i will either buy one of these

www.studiospares.com/prod...goryText&p=
with a mono/mono to stereo y lead, and run that from my 2 spare delta outputs

or, just plug one of these
www.studiospares.com/prod...d=&hidden1=
into the phones socket on my MA-20Ds.

thanks for the help!

just one more question... i am looking at which y lead i should buy, if i were to go with the headphone amp option.

in my studiospares catalogue the only cable i can see which looks like it would work is an insert lead. would this work?

www.studiospares.com/prod...d=&hidden1=

for some reason i am thinking that one of the mono jacks on it sends to the stereo jack, and one recieves it back again....

cables and jacks have no say in which direction the signal is traveling...they are just conductors. alotta ppl use the two mono to one stereo cable to use as insert send and return...but that's just the way they are usin' the cable. so yeah something like that might be a good idea.
