After "mastering" a song for the last 3 hours, I now know I need some better monitors. I thought the lowend and everything was just perfect. Pop it into my walkman and it just sucked. My price range is fairly limited to $300, so if anyone has any suggestions, they would be greatly apreaciated.

I have been happy with my KRK RP-5's. They set me back about $300 but I really like them. They advertise the low end to only go down to about 56hz so If you do real bass heavy music you might want to keep looking. What I do though is get everything else where I like it and then work on the bass with headphones. I know thats not ideal but it works for me. They offer a sub but I havent had the extra cash to think about that yet.

for low budget monitors in the $300 i favor the Event Electronics TR5. i use the TR6. one of my buddies has som samson monitors that sound decent. the m-audio ones i heard at GC where nice but they seemed bass heavy, i don't know if this was the location. the tr series seems to have the flatest response with no hyping of the low end. my mixes sound pretty close in my room on my stereo and in my car to how they sound in this room. but they still sound like *** when compressed to mp3 and played through pc speakers when other things dont, i guess this is from lack of better mastering.

i hate mixing in headphones cause the small speakers can't produce the bass sounds to compete so when i hear the mix in a room the bass and drums are way loud in the mix. phones are better for listening to stereo placement.

Thanks for the replies. I do need something that would cover the sub-bass end, so the RP-5's dont seem like they'll work. I'll try out the TR5's sometime soon. Thanks again.

Lost for words with all to say.

I love my M-Audio's with the sub. Not cheap though...

I got tannoy reveal passive for 340$us. Very nice. The actives are 850$ a pair, so I went with the passives, and drove them myself.

I have JBL 4206's, they are discontinued now it appears, but if you can find a set, they'll likely be $300 or less and they sound great.

I have had great results with Bheringer truths. (self powered) You can find em under $300 for a pair.
