For some reason I can't get an MP3 to record without some kind of distortion on there. WMA's and WAV's are fine. Using anything I can get my hands on to do it. What's up. Wavelab LT just doesn't cut it. Too poor for anything else....Any freebie type things out there?

i bieleve musicmatch jukebox can encode mp3's...

something about your statement that strikes me...when you say "record" an mp3 are you accually recording to an mp3 format??? or are you recording to .wav then ENCODING to mp3 afterwards? most ppl do that. but i'd immagine if you were recording to mp3 the distortion, compression, and degradation would be most noticable.

also something to check is the mp3 quality...i find 128kbps works best for my needs...good quality (for mp3) and small filesize....one thing i can't stand is Varible Bit Rates!!! why won't they just do away with that crap! i can always hear a VBR mp3 stickin' out like a sore thumb above my other mp3's.

i don't know maybe i just have a coupple bad apples.....i'm not sure how the process works (which might be another reason i don't trust them), but i think the "bad" part of what i'm hearing with them is when the rate drops below 128kbps and maybe that's why i don't like 'em.

i can't usually hear the trademark "mp3" digital sound on consumer speakers unless i crank up the volume.....but i can pick out a VBR almost instantly on consumer speakers.

on monitors i cant stand any mp3s at all.
which reminds me of something.....the newest A Perfect Circle album has a **** load of "digitalness" on it....the darn thing (cd) sounds like it's all mp3's. WTF is up with that? i ripped my cd and encoded it at 128kbps and A/B'ed them on my monitors and they both sound the same!!!! i would expect more out of such talent....omg ya know what, that could be another one of Maynard's jokes on the listeners again....i can hear him sayin' it now "just put mp3 quality on the album because that's all they want anyway" hmmmmmmm

I found a fantastic music management program that also converts files to all of the major and up and coming formats. Does a great job, and it is super for organizing your MP# etc collections. Here is the link. It is totally free. Just save your files as waves and then use this program to convert to MP3.

Mediamonkey is what I use to look after my entire record collection - held on a 40GB HD - it kicks ***.

Its also free and the upgraded full version is even better.

Noize, I think I passed ye that one for the links before but if no, could be a good shout - share the love so to speak! haha.

Cheers

Right, not "recording" to MP3, but encoding the *.wav file to MP3. Sorry about that. Musicmatch thing didn't work for me, and I don't think I read all the help files on Audacity, dB-Wan (lazy, lazy). Maybe I'll give it another try.

I'll also try mediamonkey - thanks for the tip. I love the price too.....

LOL @ A Perfect Circle CD thing.....That's funny.

"and I thank you all.."

Ah, then ye want "dB Power Amp" - its free, has HUNDREDS of encoders (for MP3, MP4, blah blah) and its free!!

I use it to encode most files..it can also go the other way i.e. MP3 >> WAV etc. Its very good, easy to use and thats all it does so its handy. Comes with "LAME" and many more popular Codecs.

Google "dB Power Amp" and download it...ye WONT regreat it.
