Epiphone G-1275 Double Neck!!!

Hi Guys

I am SERIOUSLY looking at buying one of these monsters for live gigs and obviously, studio recordings.

I have an Epi Les Paul and love it dearly...so, I was thinkin this could seriously rock (and look cool on stage!!).

Anybody used/own one of these or have any experience of it..particularly tone, sounds versus a regular Les Paul (EPI) and also the weight thing...I see this beast as being heavy for sure.

All inputs are welcome...I spied it for around £500 UK so thats aboot $950 ... not bad for 2 geetars one of which ahs 12 strings!!

Cheers

Coco.

Yeah, I've played 'em. I think it's a total waste unless you just wanna "look cool". They are heavy and only one neck can be in a comfortable playing position.

Unless you actually NEED to have two guitars available at once (which is pretty rare in pop music), I find them quite useless.

Ah..nice one dB. Aye - heavy they would be for sure...I was tossin up that idea or an SG after hearing some cool SG's of late (olddog of this very site seems to get a killer tone with his).

But, it sure as hell would look cool....Jimmy Page in stairway kinda cool ! OOhhh yeahh!

Cheers bud

I dunno, I have seen lots of local acts or small bands have a guy that has double necks and crap that never touches the "other" neck...I think thats stupid, all your doing is hurting your back.

If one needs to have both necks for a particular song, well, then it's a different story. When I was performing I always tried to get my bands to steer clear of songs that were overly difficult to perform, had too many instrument changes or shitlike that. Not cuz we couldn't do them, just cuz they were a hassle to do live...

Aye..that would be a problem - live gigs and poor soundchecks..tuning a 12 string and 6 string!!

It would suit a couple of songs but would sit looking cool most of the time..probs not worth the cash but I may get one one day for posterity if I ever get the extra dosh!

Oh man don't be "that guy" with the doubleneck. 30 years ago when Jimmy Page had one, I'm sure that it was novel for everyone. Now they just bring back nightmares of early 90s hair metal bands to me.

For not too much more you could buy a nice Rickenbacker elec. 12 string. At least it'd hold its value, whereas when the novelty of an Epi double neck wears off, I don't think that you would get much for it used.

I guess that it just depends on what you want...we can't really talk you into it or out of it.

I agree with TadPui completely, and do about most things except football...

If you do buy one, and you buy a violin bow, I'll personally fly over to scotland and kick your ***. ;-)

A buddy of mine has a real Gibson doubleneck (and apparantly money coming out his ***) and I have seen it played maybe twice.

I like your plan B...the SG! I used to swear by Les Paul's, still love them but I have a 61 re issue SG that is now my number 1. It is the most playable guitar I have ever owned, not to mention the tone that that thing spits out, it's also a hell of a lot better on my back than the Les Paul.

Go for the SG, but I'd go with a Gibson unless you find a really nice epi SG...I just don't find the Epi's to be quite up to par with the real deals.

an old co-worker of mine wanted to buy one of these, not to play just as a collectable. i cant imagine how akward it would be to play one of these. remember steve vais triple neck heart shaped guitar!! lol! or how about that dood michael angelo who has a double neck left and right handed and can shred on both necks..

I have to go along with everyone else coco, you'd be much better off I think with an SG (or whatever) and if you really need a 12 string electric, get one of those down the road. I see 12 string electrics as "if you have everything else, then maybe get one" :)

Yah, I hear yis...after reading some reviews, I also notice folk have bother holdin this big momma! Adding new strap buttons and such like.

Fek that for a game of soldiers...Olddog..Im joining ya with an SG my man...as soon as the bucks allow it, am gonna get me a Gibson SG. Soooooooccchhhawweett! Yah.

I could get the EPI but the Gibson goes for aboot £500 new!! Sweet man. Sweet. the Epi is £200-£300 - may as well go for the Angus Young Signature - NOTTTT! Tho, it would be cool, alas, the cash I dont have - but a nice standard SG for aboot £500 will do nice.

OK...watch this space lads...the buckeros come in - the SG comes in tae...I WONT tell teh wife tho :-) !!

Indeed man...I sneaked most of my studio in the wee cupboard under the stairs (my old studio) til the wife started wising up...she couldnt reach the ironing board for QUOTE "stupid wee boxes" and "all that noisey junk stuff" !! BWWWHAHAHAHAHA....how little she did know!!

Tho, smarter than I thought when she checked the names on the web and suddenly all my £25-£30 ($50-$60) purchases showed their true worth i.e. £100-£200 + !! hehehe...but, it was cool for a while!

Anyways - "tho shalt not tell thy wife of sneaky purchases" should indeed be number 1 in the HRC COmmandments of sneakily buying gear :-D !

Cheers

coco, my 2 cents. I agree with all above. Stay awasy from the double neck. They are painull to play, even sitting down. And sittinf is uncofortable as there is now good place for the arm to be.

Agree with the Rick 12 string, much better use outa that beast indeed.

And lastly, the only person on the face of this planet who really needs a multi necked guitar, and indeed plays em all, all 5 infact! Rick Neilson of Cheap Trick.

why thanks. I dunno, I think we even see pretty close on football. Now Minnesota's climate, that's another story!

Ya know, my wife has actually encouraged my last several major purchases. The LP, the Traynor, my new mixer...what more can you ask for, fellas?

Well I can honestly say I don't think you'll regret it coco, it's a great guitar. I chose it over a Les Paul in '78 and after playing my son's Les Paul which is real nice I'd still chose an SG today. :)

Aye...its looking like an SG Special is affordable at £500 - not as good a finish as the more expensive models but surely the same pick ups which is cool...

Cheers Dan..

I wouldn't have a problem picking up a Special at all. What little difference there is certainly won't affect the tone and playability.

Cheers Dan, and now, I need only the cash!!!

Tho, I am tossin it up between the green one (the colour of my football team) or the red (the colour of the famous Angus Young geeeeetar)...

Ahhh...I dunno man. There would surely be less greens oot there which makes me more original...then again, if I ever make a cock-up of something, it also makes me more memorable! DOHHH!

I dunno.

Just idle curiousity here...has anyone thought about, or looked into that Line 6 Variax? I am hopefully going to get one for a few days to try out. But, we all know Line 6 modeling is the bomb, and the Variax, if you don't know, is a guitar modeler. Plus, with their new software package that actually allows you to chose and place pickups on a body you choose, etc...might be a very cool, and effective alternative to multiple guitars...

Just a thought line6.com/variax/

I recently checked it out online..it sounds quite good for a modelled instrument but alas, it looks darn awful.

It would be handy for recording tho..I had thought of trying to get one then I got thinkin aboot the SG and the double neck.

NOw, Ive pretty much talked maslef into the SG...also good for live work for the rock music I play.

But, from the samples I heard online that Variax SOUNDS the bomb...very cool.

Looks aweful? I think it looks very nice, personally...

I had an SG once years back, I could never get the sound out of it I wanted to so I sold it...

I reckons the reason it looks weird and I dont like it is the lack of pickups and for the lower end models, the finish..I dunno - it just doesnt look to cool to me.

BUT, it does sound good from the samples I heard. I must concede that and I WONT rule out buying one for recording...but, I dont see me playin it live.

That said, the higher end models do look better with the cool finishes etc...

Well, then again, me saying it looks cool is silly, as my main guitar is chopped down explorer type body, neon yellow with weird looking Q-Tuner pickups and soon to have neon green control knobs that go up to 11...so you can see I am not that into what something "looks" like...I gotta get a picture of my axe uploaded sometime...it's wacky.

Lack of pickups is kinda unusual, but the body style, finishes and such I think are pretty cool...I hope I get the chance to try one out...and I think I will, I think Line 6 will send me one for a few days.

Dont get me wrong dB. the sound KICKS *** - for sure. check them samples - they are wicked...as I say, I aint ruling oot buying one (tho I want the SG first) but even with the looks issues I have, sound is the most important...I just wouldnt wanna gig with it I dont think.

But, as I say, for recording, tis cool.

For sure stick up picks of yer axe - sounds mad and wacky, tho cool at the same time...aye - its all individual taste I guess tho ... so...fair dues.

I checked out the Variax, on the site, looks interesting and sounds pretty good, but I'd definitley want to actually get my hands on one before buying. IMHO, though a good regular guitar is capable of most sounds I heard out of it.
I think I'd be more intested in Gibson's digital LP if I were going to get something along those lines, or maybe even a Roland GR33 guitar synth.

Aye..it does look cool, as does the Gibson offering (tho I Think the Gibby is far more expensive no?).

I would like the concept of havin all those geetars...I just want me a Gibson for the sound, feel and I also always wanted an SG since seeing Angus twice kick *** with his...I can see the opportunties to stand on an amp heidbanging, playin thunderstruck and the like...sccchhaaawweettt!

open up your wallet, retail is 4 grand.

i just bought a brian moore guitar to use with my gr 33, the guitar tracks way better than the gk-2 pickup, but its a very light guitar, and i like my guitars with a little meat on them.

WYD, the whole ideea behind the Variax is to avoid the need for midi. As most midi guitar pickups have lots of little things that make them not work so well all the time. This technology blows away any previous way of doing it before.

Oh and did I say, Santa Please bring me one for Xmas.

I seem to remember seeing a cool picture of either chap from Genesis - is it Mike Rutherford? - with a double-neck. It was a bass, plus a twelve string. Now that was cool.

My main four stringer is solid walnut, and I get a sore back from that...can't imagine something that huge!

by the way, Coco, have you considered "warmoth" parts....build your own......They have all configs.
