Where Should I Buy Oktava..

Hey Guys, I'm having a hard time finding a decent place to purchase a pair of oktava 012's. Musicians friend doesn't sell oktava anymore and I don't have a guitar center nearby or any decent music store for that matter.

I don't know, they seem difficult to find. My usual places that I go to if MF doesn't carry what i'm looking for are sweetwater or humbuckermusic, and neither of them carry oktava either.

Anyways, if any of you know a reliable place online where I can get them, please let me know.
thanks

They are one of the few places left selling Oktava stuff. These are the tested hand built models, not the low end units sold by GC and MF and several others.

I found out with some research that there was an absolute glut of Oktava mics produced with much lower quality parts and sold through many retailers worldwide. Not sure how much truth there is to that but it sounds reasonable since I know several peeps who got crap mics with the Oktava name on them.

Anyway, this is the place I purchased my early model vintage Oktava if you can call it that.

Thanks Noise for the link! I have a lot of requests for these mics now that peeps are realizing the quality of the units. It is funny; When they where less expensive most folks just passed them by. Now that they have made a name in the industry and are more expensive everybody is trying to grab one.

I wonder too about the units that were sold by MF and GC toward the end of those retailers handling them. I got lucky I guess. I snatched one 319 and 3 012's and they are all fine units. I did hear a lot of folks getting poor quality units however. I really wonder if there were knock-offs, seconds, or if Oktava had a problem in pre-release testing for a bit. Given what our Russian friends where going through at that time all of the above would probably be a reasonable guess.

Ya, even dB got one that went bunk after a few uses. I have tried desperately to find the cause, and still nothing can be pinponted as to the cause of its death. I am guessing its got to be something so tiny I just cant see it. As it is, checking all the pathes through the thing seem to give the indication nothing is wrong. But it doesnt work at all.

But as for that link, I have heard nothing but good comments from peep's who have purchased through them.

I bought one about 3 years ago when I came to HRC and walt and a # of people were talking about them and they were cheap to buy from MF . I got mine and well...my B-1 sounded better ..compaired my SM 58 worked better , i was not impressed but I used one at GC about a year ago and it was night and day, i guess i got a dud.

Man Geoff that is so strange. I have heard quite a few peeps with bum experiences now however. I remember one peep, can't remember the name that got one of the first bum 319's. I remember both Noise and I obviously really believing he was doing something wrong. I remember asking if he had applied phantom power. I feel a little foolish now as he was a little miffed (pleasent in demeanor however) with my pseudo accusation. I have used my 319 for about five years now and it even took a little bounce off a table as the mic stand got toppled at one point. It has a little 'war memorial' flat spot in the screen and it still solicites boocu rave commentaries from listeners as to it's clarity and warmth.

Just too wierd.

Ya, I wont be trading mine off any time soon either. But then mine is very old and sturdy. The warm sound that thing gets is something else. I honestly like it better then My AT3035 or my CAD E-100.

I'm back bitches!!!

I'm a firm believer in the premise "You get what you pay for." I bought a Used pair for about $300 and they work great. Something tells me that the ones sold on MF for $100 each are not made as well. Maybe that's why they don't sell them anymore along with the rest of the civilized world.

Hey I just ran across some info on the mysterious decline in quality of Oktava mics. It's because they are being basically counterfeited by some manufacturer in China.

Although I can't really tell if this site is legit itself, it does appear to be the real Oktava.

And here's their detail about the fake Chinese MK-012:

Hopefully this'll be helpful to any current or future Oktava owners.
