why is the level of recording so much lower when playing back on another computer or c.d. player? When recording all the levels are as high as I can get them ect... Is it a sound card issue? what do you suggest as a upgrade.

proper mixing and mastering....when recording, what you see is definately not what you get.

This was something very close to my heart when I started. Go through the threads (tedious I know but very much worth it) and gleam as much info as possible. i did and it helps, together of course with the help of the longer serving members (who seem to hold the holy grail of recording knowledge. The best method I have found is to record upto -3db for each track and then add effects or comp or whatever as necessary then go through the whole mastering process (look on the harbal site for the most wonderfully simple explanation). This will then get your overall volume levels up but remember its not all about volume, things like each instrument / voice has its place in the mix - panning eq etc...

The thing to do is do not get discouraged. I spent a month just trying to get volume levels up to a realistic level.
