A while back I called up GC for a question about monitors...they never seem to have passives. I figured I went the passive route again because I have an amp...So I asked the guy..."What kind of passives do you folks carry/recommend?"...(pause)...clerk replies "what do you want those for??"....I said "I have a Hafler P3000 amp so why not??"...he replies "Well I guess thats ok but powered would be the way to go..." so he continued to push me down the powered road even to the point of telling me he would pay me $125 for my amp on a trade in, when in fact I bought it less than a year ago for about $300. So I played with him by rattling off high buck names and my opinions to make him aware that I know what I am talking about for the most part...

In any case...the big beef he had with amp driven systems is line interference saying amps are suseptable(sp) to picking up unwanted frequencies (hum)...and self powered monitors are power balances so you dont get voltage spikes...

My questions is...couldn't the guy just have suggested a line regulator/hum eliminator when we spoke of this hum/voltage spike issue??? Instead of trying to steer me towards a pair of HR824's???

These people (Walt and few others exclude) irritate me...and MGR don't carry monitors I can listen to...In my opinion I miss Mars Music...they were always cool with me and I had good experiences buying from there....I dunno...

Well, the salesman is clearly only interested in what he thinks you should have rather than giving the customer what he/she wants. I have been using passives for years with great results. It's sad that you can't even listen, perhaps call Groth in Bloomington, see what they can do for ya, or try a few different MGR's.

I always thought passives were the "real way to go" (though due to budget I use powered) because it's easier to get a really good speaker and a really good amp as seperate units than it is to get a really good speaker and a really good amp in the same box.

However that is assuming really nice equipment... though it lends the flexability to run a pair of nice speakers on a cheap amp while you save up for a nice amp... instead of having to buy both at the same time.

Honestly they are pushing powered because they are the flavor of the month. I dont buy into the interferance crap as they still need a line going to them. Now I realize they have dedicated amps for high and low end, but if your set-up is done proper it should make no differance. At least not enough for the average home studio.

And if powered are such the big deal, why doesnt every pro studio on the planet have them??? They dont because they dont need them.
